1. Thanks guys for all your help and tips regarding this, I even ended up emailing Spector customer services and within 2 hours got a reply back from PJ Rubal, their vice president - how's that for customer service!

And...after putting a new set of strings on and tweaking the saddles a bit, there's no "wobbly" notes.

    Phew!

    Cheers

    Dan

  2.
I'd check to see if the neck is straight, by sighting down the neck from the body end. Sounds as if you might have a bit of back bow in that area. Also check the intonation of the D string, that might throw the tuning off a bit and cause the "wobble".......
Never had to adjust the intonation on my old SSD NS94 so any advice on how you do that on a Spector bridge would be more than welcome!
My money is on a dodgy string. I have definitely heard an "out of phase" sound with factory strings in the past.
Luckily had ordered on tuesday a new set of strings so should be there when I get home - fingers crossed that'll sort out the problem.
Thanks for all the suggestions so far guys!

    Cheers

  3.
There are a few nice Spector basses here in the "For Sale" forum, they might still be for sale. Check them out!
Did have a butchers but don't want a 5 or 6 string, some VERY nice ones up for sale though!
Yes, Spector basses are incredible. It's a club I'd like to get back into one day!
Well one of the reasons I've been after one is that I used to have an SSD NS94 (which I kept for about 8 years - longest I've ever kept a bass) and the Legend seems to be the closest to that one that they make nowadays.

Had an email back from Darren @ The Bass Merchant and he's said that even if they don't have stock that it wouldn't take 'em long to get one in - slightly different to GAK then!

Cheers, that is a nice one but am really liking the Slate Grey finish if I'm honest.
The stock indications on gak mean nothing. I ordered an "in stock" cymbal off them, turns out it wasn't actually in stock for a month! Certainly not the only story I've heard of that either...
After doing a bit detective work on t'net - you ain't wrong!

I'm guessing The Bass Merchant is closed till next week but first thing tuesday I shall be phoning Darren and hopefully ordering the Custom 4...(or possibly a ReBop...lol!).

    Cheers and Happy New Year!

  5. Afternoon all,
After finally shifting both my Geddy Lee jazz and my Fernandes 5ver, I finally got the cash I needed to splash out on a new Spector Legend Custom 4 (the Slate Grey finish was the one I was going for).

Having contacted the guys @ GAK on this here forum some months ago, I was given the impression that not only were they selling Spectors through the website but also they had physical stock in the shop, which was great as I only live a 25 min drive from Brighton!

So all excited I made a phone call this morning and got through to a very helpful chap called Graham who preceded to tell me that they...have none in stock and won't have for at least a few months so I would be better off contacting Mansons in Exeter!

In his defence he did tell me that for the money I had to spend he suggested this...http://www.gak.co.uk/en/ibanez-btb700dx-bu...wine-flat/31188
...but what got me was that the GAK site is quoting only 5-10 days!

Very peeed off about this as I could possibly be without a bass for a while!

Anyway, rant over, I'm off to email the chaps @ The Bass Merchant!

    Cheers

    Dan

  6. The gear I've got my eye on for next year is...

Spector Legend Custom 4 or 2nd hand Euro 4

New pickups (and possibly active preamp) for my Fernandes 5 string (as I've been trying to sell it for a year but no takers!, so might as well upgrade a few things on it)

New amp and cabs - 2nd hand Trace Elliot or Hartke LH500 or Peavey 450, not sure about what cabs to get at the mo'

Have come to the conclusion that the gear I had ten years ago is pretty much what I'm after now...doh.

    And musically I'd like...

    A new band

    Some gigs would be nice!

    Merry Xmas!

    Dan

  7.
The other thing I find a little disconcerting is that they seem to only sell "Elites" strings - whilst they may be good strings, I kinda like the brands I'm already using and would like to at least have the choice of something other than something they've decided I have to use...

... such a weird setup and the more I think about it the more I will never use them again...
Elites are their own brand so I'm not suprised they would want to only sell those!

Use to use 'em all the time many years ago but the quality went down.

  8. Popped into my local WH Smith's yesterday just to see what mags they had and blow me! They actually had the latest copy of BGM!

It's very occasionally that it makes an appearance in said shop, so being a subscriber I looked forward to getting home and reading my copy (I'd left home early yesterday to go to work before the postie had been) so I got home and...nothing!

Don't get me wrong but all the other mags I subscribe to (Classic Rock, Empire, SFX etc...) all manage to send my copies either before the "proper" issue date or on the day it hits the shops.

I just get the feeling that the mag doesn't treat it subscribers that well, I never get a reminder that my annual subscription is coming to an end and they're always saying you'll get a free set of strings if you renew...well I've done that 4 years in a row and got nada!

Anyway rant over...looking forward to reading it when it DOES arrive...lol!

  9.
I mean - what were they thinking with that sub-octave thing?!? :)
Probably the same as Ashdown... :)
Love my LH500. Try 'em both if you can. Just one thing. What cabs were you planning to use the amps with?
Erm...I guess the HyDrive ones are the best ones to use if I did opt for the Hartke but am open to any suggestions!

  10.
I've owned both, and didn't find 'my sound' in either - both of them suffered from a lack of punch, plenty of volume and lots of scope for different tones, but the difference when I moved to an Orange Bass Terror was HUGE.
Never really thought about Orange stuff - am I right in thinking Geddy Lee using them at the mo'?
Yes. Start by not touching any of the knobs, it already sounds good and full.

To be honest I am suspicious of amps that have lots of knobs and switches and sliders. It makes me think it's probably a fundamentally bad-sounding amp. I think the Hartke LH heads have little in the way of EQ onboard because they were confident it sounded good.
After using an Ashdown MAG for the last few years - I've never been happy with the sound from it AND that's with the EQ activated and the 2 presets pushed in!, so this has definitely given me food for thought.
I'm happy to admit that I've got a Peavey head with 12 buttons too many on it and would have gone for a "cutdown" version without those buttons if they had one in their range that matched my requirements. :)
Fair play to you sir!

  11.
As always, the best advice would be to go and try them both out and see which one suits your needs the best :)
I'm purchasing a Spector soon from a well known south coast shop and from what I can see they keep both in stock so will have to try 'em both out!
The Hartke naturally has scooped mids sound,
Funnily enough I've been trailing YouTube for any clips and found this...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MywqeLVu57E

  13. Afternoon all, I'm looking to get a new rig in the new year and have been looking at both the Hartke LH5000 and the Peavey Tour 450.

From what I can gather, the LH5000 is powered by a valve and the Tour 450 is soldid state but apart from that, they both seem fairly close in price and power rating so just wondered what peoples' opinions on these two would be!

    cheers

    Dan

  14. Coooooooooooooooool!

I had this one as my first "proper" bass in exactly the same colour, always regretted selling it especially as I found out via a mutual friend that the guy I had sold it to had bought another bass and decided to leave the Yammy in his shed for a few years.... :)

Definitely a bargain you got there!
