Honest question here mate, and I have no beef with Ashdown, they arent for me, but at the same time, my gear isn't for everyone...

I've only seen Nate Mendel using a Verellen Meatsmoke head on an Ampeg cab these days, and very recently, and is quoted as saying -

"I’ve been looking for something like this for a long time. It’s so nice to be able to plug in your amp and know that it will be loud and clear, and that I don’t have to struggle with an amp that is…struggling"

I think I am right in saying that Nate is still using Ashdown for his work with Foo Fighters but is using the Verellen for his other project 'Lieutenant.' He was using the Meatsmoke with Sunny Day Real Estate through an ABM810 back in 2009 as well.

  2. I was very tempted to pick up Merton's CTM 100 when I saw it in the classifieds to get that power tube breakup which I can't get with my CTM 300 without all the windows in the house going the way of the dodo. The CTMs are great amps though. Completely agree that they seem to move a lot of air in a way which most amps just can't. I think that has something to do with putting out quite a lot of lows regardless of how the EQ is set. Such a musical sounding amp!

  3. As an Ashdown junkie, I liked the look of this during the run-up to Namm... until I saw the pricetag :-/

Something like a MiBass and a Mi10 cab could give me everything that I want from something like this (small, interface friendly etc.) for a similar sort of price if not less.

    My $0.02. Sorry Ashdown!!

  4. Check on the Thomman site Merton...it is listed but without many details and no pictures yet. Nothing mentioned by Ashdown yet but I'm sure we will see something soon!

Currently listed is a head, a couple of combos and a few cabs including an 810. Might be the new line to fill the gap that used to be filled by the MAG range since that all moved to the Rootmaster range. Just speculation on my part though :)

  5. I used to use the Sub-Octave quite a lot in my last band... found it useful when following guitar riffs higher up the neck to keep some of the beef there. Not a fan of compressors generally but used to use the one on my EB combo when I was first experimenting.

Really looking forward to trying an EVO IV ABM... my EVO III 900 is great, but those 2 extra EQ bands and a bit more on tap from the valve drive would be great. Price tag looks a little on the steep side though at £1499 for the 1200... pretty much twice what an EVO III 900 will set you back at the moment

  6. The EVO IV range is being announced at NAMM, as is the new Tone Man range which I think is going to be similar to the new-ish Rootmaster products but with possibly more features or a different EQ.

Here are the details of the EVO IV 1200 from dv247:

  7. That is the route I am taking for all of my other templates. I think Crimson Guitars do a set of Jazz templates as well but I can't vouch for the quality. I have tools from them and they are top notch though!

  8. I have recently got some tools from Ben at Crimson Guitars after meeting him a couple of years ago at a craft/wood fair including the levelling files, crowing files and end dressing files as well as a fret rocker, fret rubbers and a notched straightedge and have been shocked by what I have found out about some of the instruments in my house! Some of my basses will be getting a treatment in the very near future. I don't think my dad would forgive me if I had a crack at the high frets on his Epi Sheraton 2 ;)

All of the tools are beautiful and very well made. His videos are great as well! I can't wait for the bass nut files to be released from these guys

  9. The set available from Stew Mac have been good for me. I only have the J set so can only vouch for those.

Apparently the P pickup template is fine for routing if there will be a pickup as it is a little 'loose' around the pickup, but not for an 'un-hidden' pickup

  10. Hi guys,

I posted in here before asking for some pickup dimensions for a university project and got great responses so hoping for the same again.

The dimension I am looking for is the distance from the front edge of the nut to the front edge (edge closest to end of fretboard) of the P pickup on a Fender style Precision Bass.

I have trawled through various threads on a few forums and haven't gotten a definitive answer to this as many people seem to measure to the center of the polepieces, which considering that pickup dimensions do differ slightly does not allow me to calculate the position accurately.

If somebody could measure this and let me know the model of bass they have taken the measurement from I would be very, very grateful.

I have read that the dimension changes on instruments which feature a J pickup at the bridge depending on whether the J pickup is in a 60s or 70s position... I have no idea if there is any truth in this but would be interested to hear what you guys have to think.

    Thanks in advance!

  11. If it isn't a vintage instrument, I would so have a go! By the sounds of it, you have experience with several of the steps involved, so this should be pretty straightforward for you.

Would you mind explaining what you mean by 'leaving finish fillet on sides of frets' in step 6 though please?

I will be interested to see how it all progresses :)

    Good luck!

Turns out that Retroglide is also the name of a Level 42 album......
Indeed it is... Mark Gooday (owner of Ashdown) is a friend of Mark King's and has full permission to use the name, although it is not linked to Mark King or Level 42 in any way
