It would. I also have a little fantasy about producing a blue Peterbuilt-alike using a Dark Star or one of its clones...

The re-shape was done using a template kindly provided by Mr Kodiakblair and carried out (by me) in a very unsophisticated manner using a junior hacksaw and lots of sanding. The neck colour is a combination of Amber Tint and Dark Yellow nitro. I left the back of the neck alone, because I like the stock satin finish. The necks on these basses are great.

Here's an indoor pic taken on my phone, which is more how it looks away from direct sunlight. In artificial light it looks even lighter. I'm sure at a gig under stage lights it would look like 'a white bass'. Either way, I'm pleased with the look and even more pleased with the Herrick dual-coil. These basses cost less than £100 from Thomann, but you can appreciate that for the money I've spent overall, I could probably have picked up a very playable and good-looking new or used bass. But I wouldn't know what I now know about pickups, refinishing, how a bass is put together and all those little related bits of random knowledge picked up during the process.

That seems to be a new addition to the product range, but I suppose it must be. I asked Martin to make me a dual-coil 51 Telebass pickup overwound to 11k ohms. He made three or four, so I'm guessing that must be one of 'em! Mine has AlNiCo 5 magnets, but I'm sure Martin would supply whichever magnets you wanted. I imagine a Neo version would be pretty poky, if that's your thing.

We'll need detailed pics, a long rambling explanation and some off-colour jokes, please.

It usually does. You can lightly buff it with polish if you want it a bit shinier. Again, I'm not that fussed as I prefer a 'light relic' look anyway. I should probably point out that I'm very much an amateur where refinishing is concerned. Just in case you hadn't worked that out.

Stripping bodies back to the wood is highly overrated in my opinion! Some careful keying of the surface followed by one or two very light mist coats followed by a few heavier coats seems to work well. Then leave to harden for a week or two before applying clear coats followed by wet and dry work with progressively finer Micromesh, if you want that glass-like finish. I can't be bothered once the colour coats are on.

Originally it was poly over a fotoflame sunburst finish. I keyed it with a Scotchbrite pad and shot a few coats of Shoreline Gold nitro over it, which turned out very well. Then I got bored with that, so did a bit of wet and dry work with some micromesh then sprayed about four coats of TV Yellow nitro. There's no clear coat - I'm hoping for some interesting wear over time. the actual colour isn't as yellow as the pics show. They were taken in a conservatory in bright sun. It's more of a cream colour, like the 68 Telebass of that year. The top pic is most representative colour-wise.

I've never noticed any tone or sustain differences when swapping out bridges. The only good reasons to swap as far as I'm concerned are: 1) for aesthetic considerations, and 2) for playing comfort, i.e when palm muting with a pick.

No I didn't, but the backplates are bloody tight. I screwed them on loosely at first then tightened them up gradually over time and eventually got them in place. But it would probably have been easier and quicker to file them.

Thank you, sir. That Herrick dual-coil is really the business - it has a lovely growl and is punchier than Mr Punch. And Judy. And the sausages. Or something. Hot, isn't it?

HB PB-50 - v3.0 Becomes v4.0... *AUDIO CLIP* You'll be pleased to know that this will be the final reincarnation of this HB PB-50 Precision Bass. Yes... I know I said that last time - but Shoreline Gold, though a very nice finish, isn't really my thing. My thing is basses that are white. Or cream. Or aged Oly White. Or yellow, basically... you know what I mean. I was particularly taken with the new Player Series 'Buttercream' P bass - hence this refinish and reworking - saving myself £649. This one has a custom handmade Herrick dual-coil pickup in it - and very nice it is too... warm, taut and punchy, with the mid-range push typical of a 57-type split-pickup, but in a 51-type four-pole format. It's a beast... check out the audio clip. https://www.herrickpickups.com/ The previous version 3.0 bass is here. Now read on. Body refin in TV Yellow nitro Pickguard in Acrylic White Fender American Deluxe Bridge, Top-Loading or Through-Body Herrick Dual-Coil Telebass '51' pickup overwound to 11k ohms CTS solid-shaft pots, Chiclet cap .047uF, Switchcraft Jack in cats-eye side plate Fender Chrome '51' Pickup Cover Fender Tug Bar Fender dome-top knurled control knobs with grub screws Wilkinson WJBL 200 tuners La Bella 760FS Steel Flatwounds 45-65-85-105, Through-Body Stringing Is this really the final version..? I hope so, because I just don't have the time (or disposable bass tokens) for any more finishing shenanigans... I thank you!

Should be easy enough. Kudos for considering a detail that won't be seen.
-
That's going to be perfect. Sonic Blue and mint are a classic combination.
-
Yes, if you're going to all this trouble It's not a lot of extra effort to wait for the guard and get it right. Do you have a pic of the guard, just to keep us going..?
-
...errm...
-
I was looking at that earlier. Isn't it a Dusty Bin signature?? Very nice.
-
I'm just going to leave the bar on there - it doesn't get in the way and has a nice vintage look about it. Besides, I'm losing the will to live and might go for a little walk by the river.
-
I just can't be bothered to do anything about the tug bar screw holes in the guard, which my OCD would not accept. So on it goes.
-
Nope. It's entirely cosmetic.
-
OK, having considered a no-guard look, I've decided to go completely the other way for a fully-dressed look. White guard, tug bar and 50s pickup cover. Thanks for the comments and opinions.

Buttercream was the inspiration for it, after seeing this:

Well yes, but I'm wondering what a Cabronita guard would look like on a 54-type body with a 54-type pickup. Probably a bit weird, is my guess. I'm tending towards the standard white guard. I like the idea of no guard, but apparently the body looks too 'magnolia'. As someone has said previously. Four times. Even though that's not the colour stated on the tin...
