I know where my money would go...
A lot of people's money is simply going where they feel it will bring them the best return. Shame really. These are just second hand guitars after all.

You could always spend two grand on a brand new reissue like this one:

Why anybody would want to is beyond me.

Nice to see the prices being bumped up. There's a Jazz JV priced at over £2,000 on at the moment, and it isn't even an export model.

Prices for these are all over the place right now. A red one fetched £900 on eBay in the summer - and it didn't even have the large Fender logo. I've been watching them all year, as I have one to sell myself, and judging the right time to offer it is really tricky.

According to the specialist web site, only 200 Fender guitars and basses (all models) with the large logo were imported to the UK, which means under 20 of each type of Precision. The States didn't get any. So, the first-generation Precisions like the one in the ad are extremely rare by any standards. I have only seen one on eBay all this year, although there have been quite a few later model Squires.

Bear in mind also that the pound is now tumbling against the euro whilst there seems to be a high demand for these from Italy (no idea why).

Having said all that, I do agree with your assessment. Could be that the seller doesn't really need to sell and is just pushing the boat out. It would take a very brave man to put one on eBay at 99p just now.

    I'd appreciate your views.
I've never had a 1970s Fender, good or bad. I'm sure some good products were made during that time, but it is well documented that CBS made a lot of money out of Fender during that decade by cutting quality and neglecting investment. The situation wasn't turned around until the early 1980s.

That's why it surprises me that these guitars/basses are fetching a premium.

Oops, yes - 20GB and tested. Thanks for the correction.

  5. I have 1 x Dell and 1 x E-machines computer I no longer need. They both have 700MHz Celerons and 20MB hard disks. One has 256 and the other has 520MB of memory, although I'm not sure which is which. They are compact mini-towers, the usual beige colour, and were in use until very recently. They are in very good condition but there are no monitors or keyboard. I've wiped the hard disks.

If you want to connect your grandad to the internet or give your children their own PC, these are ideal. They are much lower power consumption than newer PCs. They will handle most applications but will not play the very latest games and they struggle with fast video content.

You will need to collect from Dorchester. If there are no takers, they'll be on Freecycle next week.

  6. The Louis Bellson book is also supposed to be good for practicing rhythm reading. I'm about to start going through it myself.

Question to the fluent readers on here: I've heard that mentally whispering the time to yourself as you go along is a bad idea - you should just see a bunch of notes and automatically recognize the pattern. What's your view on this?

  7.
Lovely bass!

Being such an early model and in such good condition, that's got to be one to keep i would have thought?
'Fraid not. My dentist and my wife say I have to sell it and it will be on the For Sale board shortly. I thought I would post some pics here for posterity. I'll post a few more soon.

  8.
Got some info from company that made the speakers. The covers are epoxied to the speakers so there is not way to remove them without destruction.
I've done a 10" and a 15" and had no problems removing and replacing the grilles. So it can be done with some care, although I might have been lucky. Both items are now with two different Basschatters, who I am sure will confirm that they look and work fine. What I'm saying is that the information you have been given is not quite accurate and you shouldn't give up.

You should be able to re-glue the first surround if it's just a small rip. I'd carry on doing the others to see what the overall damage is and how many drivers you will have to recone/replace.

The only other drivers I know with that shape are the Volt cast chassis ones - and they might not be exactly the same size. They are pretty pricy though.

How much do Tayden want for a recone?

I notice those plastic handles have broken in the usual place.

  9.
Hey y'all!

Does anyone know where I can find charts for some Chic lines? Le Freak's the main one, but I've got a lot to learn and a short time to learn 'em in, so any help/hints/transcripts will earn you a BC Beer Token to be redeemed at any of my gigs! :)
Try this. I've no idea how good it is - it's not mine. Looks OK though.

  10.
Either 'big but light' or get a new amp as well as new cabs.

    My suggestions:

    SMX250 into The Vintage
    SMX250 into The Compact x2
    Hartke LH500 into The Compact
    Markbass LMII into The Compact

The Vintage is a BIG cab so if you have a bad back I'd be wary of it - it's light for its side but it's not much lighter than your 1x15" and it's quite a lot more cumbersome. If one of The Compacts sounds great to you but just doesn't go loud enough then try it with a more powerful head and if you can't find a more powerful head that you like the sound of then add a second cab.

I've seen the LH500 for about £200 so for your budget you could have a pretty awesome rig, ignoring what you get back from selling your current (rather nice despite the weight) gear.

Anyone else see the similarity of this and spam?

  11. I bought a £20 Seiko tuner for £2.28 a few weeks ago - the auction finished in the early hours of the morning and so there was no last minute bidding. A also recently got a brand new quality boom mike stand for £14.50 delivered.

Prices are not as depressed as I would expect them to be given the downturn. I recently sold a hifi preamp for £150 that I paid £40 for two years ago. Go figure. The best bargains are still the 'local pickup only' ones. And if you're selling, you get a much better price if you are willing to ship outside the UK. My preamp went to Spain, for example, and was bid up by someone from Italy.

  12.
There are loads of tabs/chords for guitar, but this is the only bass tab I could find, which is also duplicated on couple of other sites. I don't think it's correct.
    Abba - Dancing Queen

Very muddy & unclear production on the original though isn't it?
Sorry 'bout that. I just saw the number of hits - I didn't actually look closely at them.

The bass is indistinct on the original album but it's a lot louder on the Abba Gold compilation and relatively easy to make out. That probably doesn't help you much though.

  13.
Of all the Abba songs there doesn't seem to a tab on the net for Dancing Queen. :)
There's quite a lot going on as well, isn't there.
Put this into Google and you'll get loads of them: "dancing queen" "bass tab"

  14. I'm looking out for one. The last one I saw on eBay fetched around £80, although it was a 'collect only' sale - so I missed it. I would expect them to fetch more, but sometimes it's in the lap of the gods.
