We played a hotel near Gatwick, nice place: 4 star, £90 a head party and it was chaos! The hotel lost everyone's pre order of the menu so people had to wait an hour and a half for their mains, some of them didn't manage to get desserts. They didn't have enough bar staff so it was about a ten minute wait for drinks. It delayed our start by 45 minutes so we had to cut our first set down. The audience were thoroughly p'd off by the time they came into the dance hall, we got them dancing in the end but it was bloody hard work.
Not surprisingly lots of complaints to the hotel managers etc I reckon they'll end up giving refunds - better luck next year eh!

Blimey, where was that? As I'm local

    I'll pm you - I don't want to publicly name it ;)

  3. I first picked up a bass so I could be in a band and haven't looked back since, I don't care whether there's 1 person there or a couple of hundred, its getting up and doing it that just feels great - being in a band where we can all have a laugh and mess about when we play and play packed out clubs where loads of people dance (mostly) is just the cherry on the top. Getting paid for all that is the fine sugar glazing on top of the cherry.

Need to go now - have to go to the bakers - have a sudden craving for an iced bun :)

  4. It's such a relief that use 85 microns of silver coating. I've spent so much time worrying whether to use 87 or 85 as the difference in tone is massive. Now I know they've researched it thoroughly I can just sell my house and buy one of their 3 metre leads

  5. So I may be a philistine who has no idea of sound transmission and may just about to be flamed by musical purists but.... Epifani HDI cables - just a couple of neutrik connectors and a bit of copper - $187 for 12ft lead!! Apparently gives you amazing clarity of sound and no loss for this bargain price.

I have lots of cables with neutrik connectors 30ft long and I've never noticed any problem, they cost about £30 in any music shop. Personally I don't see how the extra £100 is going to improve things - snake oil for people with more money than sense or am I missing something?

  6. It's funny - I've playing bass for lots of years, fingers and pick on my P bass with a classic smooth sound for probably 25 years now. For the last 5 or so I've been very comfortable with what I play, not particularly improving but I feel competent and relaxed gigging a huge range of songs.

Then about 2 months ago we started playing more disco stuff in the functions band - not that we weren't playing any at all before, we just added a couple of songs and for the first time in ages I sat down and really worked at them, I was at a loose end one Sunday afternoon. All of a sudden I feel like I'm on a massive leap upwards in skill and style again, I can play better, I think my sound is better and just more on the ball - its like I've woken up when I didn't know I was asleep - I've finally cracked how to put a bit of slap and pop in - I've even just bought myself a Warwick :o

Happened to anyone else? (not buying a Warwick :) the thinking you've reached where you need to be then suddenly finding a way to improve again)
