If you can find a used Skyline Lakland Precision (Bob Glaub, Duck Dunn, 44-64), that’s about as good as you’ll find for that £750 IMO.

    Si

This all day long - I've been playing P basses for 35 years and have had loads, copies, squiers, jap, mexican US you name it (and still have a few) - the best one by a long way is my Lakland Skyline Duck Dunn special edition

  2. Yes - pick, music stand (well iPad on my mic stand) and 16 year old strings. The perfect combination. :)

they don't even give you a Rotosound sticker in the packet anymore, and it's plastic! What the hell has happened? You turn your back for a little time and the world goes mad.

  3. Hi

I just had to vent my disappointment and frustration at the obvious lack of quality and care that occurred in 2002 when Rotosound produced the batch of RS66 strings that have been on my bass for the last 16 years. The A string broke on new year's eve!!! You can imagine how shocked I was at the obvious lack of longevity of the things these days. Its also meant I've had to clean the fret board eradicating a small but very important ecosystem that showed promising signs of world domination.

  4. Great laugh last night, played a social club  in Coulsdon, 3 1/2 hour set with two breaks. 5 songs in the lead vocalist/guitarists voice packs up entirely due to his cold. We manage to make it through another half hour with me singing some of the songs I do. Then in the fifteen minute break I transposed the entire rest of the set into my best guess keys for me (thanks on song!) and I sang and played the rest by sight - pretty nerve wracking especially as I'm so used to doing harmonies on auto pilot in almost of them.

Then to add insult to injury about 45 minutes before the end I have my first string break in 30 years so I had to play the rest on just the E string. Went down really well though- everyone loved it, everyone on their feet dancing and they paid us a bonus as they liked it so much. Bit pleased with myself today :)

  5. No we haven't got anything on you tube and our websites is about 4 years out of date - I really must update it as its a bit crap not to really - we should get some decent recordings and videos as well - but we're already booked out until this time next year so it's hard to convince the other two that we need to when we haven't got any spare slots if it generates any new business.

  6.
Agreed, but some very dodgy decade allocations there ...
well yeah (blush) it's something I need to sort out on the website :)

We normally do 2x 1.5 hour sets or an hour first set and 2 hour second - lots of the fifties songs are actually really short 2-2.5 minutes and we try to go straight from one to another, few medleys etc. But normally 3 hours plus a couple of encore songs. Sometimes we play shorter sets if a club wants us to play for a shorter time. I share lead and backing with the guitarist so we both sing all night. Fine when you haven't got a cold :D

I love it as it lets you run some themes through the set as well, rock and roll phase, 80s phase, everyone's drunk and wants to sings along phase etc - we like doing a juke box every so often as well where we put a menu on each table and people can tell us what they'd like us to play (2nd set) - we also do on the fly requests which are a lot of fun - on song is awesome for this, real seat of your pants stuff, but you have to be bloody careful :) we're all old farts that have played most songs people request anyway.

  7. Here's our current set list I either sing lead or backing on -

  8. Guns and Roses - I like Slash, -Good Guitarist -and Velvet Revolver, Snake Pit was ok as well but GNR just churned out a load of bland contrived songs and covers. There were far better bands in the day that were overlooked just because GNR were "cool" and seem to still be.

Oh and any band that features dragons*, simpering maidens or long meandering faffy songs. And flute solos. Or mention Osiris and the Serengeti, or making it to the shore and throwing away paddling implements for extended periods of time.

Edit - *Except Dio. I like Dio. I think Iron Maiden mentioned dragons a few times but I think they got away with it.

  9. It was, as with all fender basses, a typical fender year with some great basses and some complete m***ers. Most of the MiM P basses have been fine, a couple have been outstanding - one of the outstanding ones was a 2004/5 that I wish I'd held onto. Usual rule applies either take a punt and flog it on if you don't click with it or try it first

  10.
and of course without question the greatest TV theme tune of all time...

Not all necessarily great basslines, but wonderful pieces of music.

The amazing Danny Thompson on bass - apparently written and recorded in an afternoon in Gerry Anderson's front room

  11. Yeah I know it's just a cable but....

I'm keen IEMs - especially as I now have a dedicated monitor mix form our new XR16 desk.

I tried the LD 1000 wireless system and frankly while it worked the bass sound especially was awful so I asked our resident expert OBBM (aka Dave of Rock Wire) to make me a cable and it works brilliantly.

It's a guitar lead (neutrik silent jack to standard jack) for my bass but also has a 3mm headphone jack for my monitor amp and the bass amp end and a 3mm headphone socket at the guitar end - crystal clear sound, no extra leads tangling and even better as the cable is slightly thicker than a guitar lead it doesn't twist up when I wander about. £900 cheaper than a shure wireless system!

Anyway there you go - today's exciting cable news!
