1. The bass playing in the Malone clip seems a bit muted, to me anyway. You should be able to get more attack out of a fretless, which may be what you need for deathcore. Just so those damn guitars don't hog all of the sound you chuck at your audience
2. From my experience, I also think a Jazz-type bass would give you a wider range of sounds and tones (especially true if playing with a pick). I can get quite alot of different noises out of my unmarked fretless Fender Jazz. All you need is a pick, some compression, some distortion, and you're off.
3.
However, the fretted bass does have a its own values and the "clunk" of the fret against string can be the more aggressive and better sound for certain music, like metal or rock or thumb/slap bass.
That said, if playing with a pick and with some decent pickups and/or compression you can get a nice 'crack' type of sound out of a fretless.
4. It also depends on the make of the bass, and perhaps if you're putting it through any effects. For deathcore a fretless could create some interesting possibilities. A marked fretless may be the best first step until you get used to playing one. After that, an unmarked one and jumping about in true deathcore styleee shouldn't be a problem. You can also actually get away with not being too anal about intonation, as long as you get the hang of a few tricks needed to get a good sound out of a fretless. If you play with a pick you will also get another variety of sound out of one compared to playing with your fingers.

Jazz Bass.

How about Wizard pickups?
6. I always find Jazzes to be quite light.
7. Damn - wasn't quick enough. Just out of interest, are the black blocks decals or inlays?
8. This site has it listed as a 'J-Craft' type (JB62-WAL). Not cheap either!
9. It looks similar to one of these... And a very nice bass it is!
10. I haven't seen one of those for ages. They used to be quite common in the late 80s, I seem to remember.
11. How old is the Jazz?
12. Can it make tea and magically dispense beer? If not, it sounds a bit pricey.
13. Yes, isn't it? Wish I could buy the lot. Alot of stuff there that I've never seen over here. Shame really.
14. This might make your GAS worse... I particularly like the Standard/PJ version of the Jazz. Mind you, I like MIJ Fender Jazzes in general.
15. Have you heard of a band called Galaxie 500? They did a good version of 'Ceremony' and are very influenced by Joy Division.
16. Warwick sell a wax surfacer for their basses, which is pretty cheap.
17. It's worth listening to if he's got it. Also worth reading for the sleeve notes by Tony Wilson. There was another tribute compilation done by a load of British bands awhile ago, but it wasn't half as good as the aforementioned US version.
18. Great stuff! Have you ever had a listen to the US-based tribute album 'A Means To An End'? It's pretty good - apart from 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' gets a mauling by someone who sounds like Edie Brickell...
19. I've got fairly long hands (i.e. not wide but quite long palm and fingers) and have no problems with either. That said, Jazz necks seem faster overall. There is a slight change from one jazz to another in terms of neck thickness, I've found. Not by all that much tho' - for example, the Squier Standard Jazz I have has a neck which is around 1-1.5mm thicker across the fretboard than my MIJ Fender Jazz, but only towards the body.
20. Sounds like it's not earthed properly, so perhaps a bad or loose solder.
21. Is that the wood grain showing through the paint there on the body? If so, it looks quite nice and may come out better if you strip it down to the bare wood and not go for the repaint option.
22. Cheers - I'll give them a try. I may also get a custom one made, as the price difference seems sensible.
23.
Opinion has it that, for optimal technical delivery, one should hang the bass to match the position it occupies when you're sitting practising. Problem with low slinging - back issues for the elderly apart - is the fretting hand wrist angle; too narrow and - whoops! - here comes the ol' carpal tunnel syndrome.
Well, I'd say it's only a real problem if your bass suffers from neck dive, as you're then working even harder against the bass via your wrist and shoulder. Aside from that, I've been playing low slung for 20 years and have never had carpal problems, etc.. 'Optimal technical delivery' is probably something that only exists in the mind of the... er... beholder, as far as where your bass hangs
24. Always play mine low-slung
25. Thanks for the link. I'm guessing they may be for Fender Jazz basses, but Squier Jazzes have a slightly different layout.
