1. Many thanks for the replies gentlemen,

:) I wish I'd never started this, maybe my question is wrong and I need to understand a lot more about music structure, in a year and it may come to me and I will think why did I ask this, but I gota say that 'questioning' the Blues seems almost sacrosanct ..

Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining, I like a good blues tune they are bright and bouncy and good fun, I just have a wish to understand...saying it influences isn't enough...that seems too easy.

Most of the examples given, are to me, different groups take on the Blues, it seems take everyone has to do it at some time? Has anyone got any example of how a blues riff influences a known funk disco bassline...and I don't mean Slave doing the blues

I was sitting down yesterday as I got home early from the car auction and started playing what to me are typical funk/disco basslines....Car Wash, Brick House, Slave Just a Touch Of Love then finished with Positive Force We Got the The Funk....

It seems to me, and yes, I'm a 100% rookie here just talking loud with very, very limited knowledge of theory, and flame me if you wish by all means, that Funk and Disco has it's own basic scale, based on a major it would run as root, 2nd, 4th, 5th, flat 7 and 8ths by the bucket load....which I think is a sort of a minor pentatonic scale but with the flat 3rd scale I think...oh dear it's getting technical.....and I'm struggling already  for all I know this could be labled as a blues scale and I have answerd my own question?

What I think is a typical blues A major riff of 1st,3rd,5th,6th and flat 7, another in G major of root, 5th, flat 7 and octave (8th)...couldn't find much in common with the tunes I played.....it must be me as I can't see it?

thanks for your patience guys...and understand that I simply wish to understand

  2. Why is Blues so important when learning bass, it must be me but it always reminds me of Croyde Bay Devon Holiday Camp, Butlins, Caravan Parks from when I was 7 years old, with bored looking bass players playing.....ba-bump-ba-bump-da-dump-da-dump sort of tunes with another guy on a Hammond Organ and a drummer.

Seriously, almost every learning medium I have come across declares that blues is the mother of all modern funk/disco/rock, everything bar classical, but I can't hear the blues riffs in most of the funk and disco songs that I know and love.

    educate me please.

  3.
The Hartke A series are great but build quality isn't as good as the old USA Hartke stuff. I have a little A70 which is loud and sounds great, however it's had a hard life and farts and rattles a bit now
I'd certainly take the Hartke over the Electric Blue which although decent enough didn't sound anywhere near as good to my ears

I'd still say go for a second hand head and cab instead of a smaller new combo. Have a look at Peavey stuff for something in your price range, there's usually a few for sale on here
thanks for the response's gentleman.

Lemmywinks: head and cab....do these still sound OK at low sound output levels, say when home practicing, or do they need to be given some beans to get a decent tone?

  4. As requested,

photos of my Yamaha RBX-374, she comes with original owners manual, unused toolkit and other bits that come when bought new, she came with D' Addario XL's Round Wounds and these are boxed up and come with her too.

Test drive welcome (you can teach me if you wish!) everything is set up ready to play and soundcheck, ohh and new battery, although the original one still has life in it!

.... no test pilots or day dreamers please :)

April/May 2009, one mature gentleman owner from new, service history, no unpaid fianance, never raced or rallied, no accidents, she comes with Ernie Ball flat wounds at the moment, very, very easy to play (it must be if I can get a tune from it!)....she is as near 'as new' as can be, no dissapointments or dramas being a Yamaha she oozes lovely build quality. I can post a piccies if you wish, but it's like every other RBX-374 :)

Got to be worth anyones £150

Essex area....or maybe Kent in a week or so.

  6. OK about me,

I'm learning bass, been messing about for a 9 months or so. I love my funk, disco stuff, play at home, currently have an little Orange Crush B20, little 20 watt bass combo which has been great really for what it is, but I'm not liking the sound any more....'tis only a 'lil amp so the tone is always gona be muddy, weak 'n cold....I live in a detatched house so I like to wind things up when I'm playing :)...for what it is this 'lil Orange is quite good but its more the tone I'm not liking, not the volume.

I spend more time on my bass than I do my £5K bike so the bass interest is really great value therefore I want to spend £250 on a decent 'ish amp, warmer, punchier, louder, better all round really and something I can also input external into...all the usual....something I won't want to upgrade in the future.

I don't really want to go s/h, I simply get plain pissed off with the hassle of kissing 20 frogs to get a princess I do it for a living buying cars and hate it....I want the reliability of buying new.....unless you can convince me otherwise.....I'm no different to anyone else and love the look of the Trace Elliot gear but everything I have enquired about in my budget, has some sort of issue...lemonade money, champagne taste.

    About my choice,

well all these amps seem to get a good review, are all in a similar price range, the Hartke is my preference at the moment as it seems the best value???

    Hartke

the Ashdown seems to be popular too, but I know nothing about them?

many thanks as always for your input gentlemen

  7.
just make sure you dont buy the ashdown mag 115..............

you might as well just plug your bass straight into a sheeps arse
......are they a little woolly sounding? :)

  8. Tony Zemaitis......was a family friend in the '70s and lived a few minutes from us, he used to take me out in his scarlet E Type Jaguar when I was a young pup...real nice guy, but you wouldn't want to buy a car off him...it would of had a very hard life:)

Got a full set of Perfect Vision records from Steve Xerri and got some free beers too....his mate also had a bootleg of a The The german concert but wouldn't cut me a copy :)

Very flaky link....my brothers friend was in a punk group, they had a new guy join on guitar, I'm 99% sure it wasn't keyboards, they fired him as they felt was not up it....his name was Gary Webb = Gary Numan

Stirling Moss knocked me over at a car trials event in the 70's and said "sorry son" and picked me up and brushed me down.

Harold Macmillan pushed in the Passport queue at Gatwick airport in a wheelchair.....being pushed along by a real hot popsy of a nurse and a minder, reminded me of young Mr Grace from Are You Being Served?

I had quick chat with Terry Waite soon after he had been released, he was driving a blue MGB Roadster along Shooter's Hill, I was on my motorcycle in a traffic jam.....he is a giant of a man.

Lots of motorsport boys 4 and 2 wheels, most of which are actually OK guys to chat with....with the exception of Carl Fogarty.

I'm a little dyslexic, ya lucky I got the worms the way right 'round...yes The The...I like my group names to be easy to remember because of this...I also like Talk Talk

    Brown..... :)

  10. QUOTE
I'm sure I read somewhere that some very, very talented musicians can't read music, let alone understand the theory.....Mark King comes to mind?
Yes, and...what's your point?.. May I refer my fellow BCer to post No 24 of this thread.

simply that the exception proves the rule...I'm not being very clear today...
