I play in a rock covers band and currently run a Trace 1215 with a 1518 extension cab. On paper, this rig should be more than ample for my requirements but, as with previous rigs, I find it lacking and have to have the output control on about 5 or 6 (about as loud as it'll go) to provide enough body for the four piece outfit I'm with.

I don't have a problem with cutting through the mix or volume, I can easily drown out everyone else but the sound is too thin for what I need
OK, now I'm confused! What exactly do you "find lacking" if you are capable of drowning out the rest of the band? But at the same time your tone doesn't have enough "body"? If you can only get that volume by cutting the bass frequencies then that should tell you something. As has already been suggested, you would seem to be in need of a much more powerful amp so that it can boost the (very inefficient) low frequencies and still have enough juice left to boost everything else!! I don't think your cabs are the issue. Despite having their detractors, TE make very good gear, as long as yours isn't damaged of course. All IMHO of course!

Good morning! This is aimed at Basschatters in the North of England and South of Scotland, but who knows? Basically, I need a fretless bass for a short period of time. I don't want to buy one, and couldn't afford one anyway! My mate, who is the drummer in my band, is having a party for his fiftieth birthday in about six weeks time. Some of our Geordie members may know him - Craig Gill. Craig wants music at the party so he has put a band together (with me playing bass) to play a set of his favourite tunes. Two or three of these really need a fretless bass and I no longer possess one! I could (kind of) approximate the sound on a fretted bass, but it just wouldn't be the same, so I was wondering if some wonderful person would consider loaning me a fretless (a cheap one would be fine) for a few weeks? It could even be a swap, with me loaning you one one of my basses... I would collect or you could drop off so you would know where I live Anyway, I know it's a long shot, but as we say up here "Shy bairns get nowt".
Well I guess it looks more like it now you've added the smilies.
Yeah - sorry about that. I can see how the original 'unsmilied' post may have come across as a bit snotty...
Anyway: who's Geddy Lee...?
Mine. And yes, these really do seem to be just about the most consistent model that Fender have produced in years. Crafted in Japan. Wonderful neck - it's not just the profile that makes it so playable, but the nature of the finish. It just slides... The one I recently acquired has after-market EMG J pickups on it, so I am yet to experience the true 'growl' - but I must admit that I kinda like the smooth, hi-fi tone that these pickups give (especially now that they are wired up properly! ). Maybe more like a Marcus Miller in tone? Anyway, if I get sick of that particular style I have a pair of Wizard Hammers in my other J bass which I might swap over. Decisions, decisions!
It's the done thing, you see. Responding would be... well, unseemly. A gentleman bassist should always enquire about basses he can ill afford, or has no intention of buying, before taking to flight.
Hmmmm. I'd never thought of that! You learn something on here every day! I now feel privileged to have crossed paths with such gentlemen!
Oops, apologies for sullying your thread with my input about where it is intrinsically more different to most other jazzes.
Don't take umbrage man - I was agreeing with you!! What's the spacing on modern Js then? Sixties style? Ijust assumed that they changed in the seventies and stayed like that.
What is the differences in the neck shape? Never tried one personally.
Very shallow. A bit like myself. Nice lacquer too. Neither too shiny nor too dull. Baby bear would approve.
Yes I was puzzled too @mb1 what do you mean by "price???" I don't think he's overcharging and he has stated a price from the start. Could you clarify ?
It's OK. The price was actually in the "proper" title, so it was lost due to the "madness" Mr MB1 was quite correct to pull me up about this fact.
So Spector, or Squier VM or other ??
Cort? Could do a lot worse. Well-made and a big range of tones. Spacing not to large or too small... But then I would say that
70s spacing
Well the instrument that inspired the model is a 1972 J, so it certainly should be!
+1 Awesome tone. Warwick +pick.
Actually, I assumed it would be a Warwick too.... but the tone he gets in the live version is very similar to the recorded one - and that don't look like no 'Wick to me... Best example of this tone is, for me, at 5:45 onward. Not many girls in that audience though - so maybe having a killer tone does not make you more attractive to the opposite sex after all?
I figured 'Geddy Lee' is just used to refer to the neck being Geddy'd. I could be wrong.
And the Badass - don't forget the Badass!

Believe me, the neck is more than "slightly tweaked"!

In the last few months there have been numerous references to (and quite a few sales of) bass guitars referred to as "Fender Geddy Lee" models. Some of them have been modified or upgraded to the point where there is little of the 'original' instrument left. Others were never actually assembled by Fender at all, but knocked up by an individual who may or may not be the one who is trying to sell the aforementioned guitar. The only common factors that link these guitars seems to be the use of a black body (but not always), a high-mass bridge and a maple neck with maple fingerboard and block inlays (usually black). So is this all a "Geddy" really is? A black bodied J bass with a maple neck? Or are some people swinging the lead slightly in their descriptions? Opinions?
