1. Nothing worse than seeing an instrument made for playing locked away in my opinion... Went to a guitar show once they had all sorts there. half of the instruments had missing or rusty strings locked away behind glass. ah well i wont get into collecting vintage gear beacuse i would be too scared to gig with the things!
2. Is this happening on the open note? or every note? if its every note it could be the string or something to do with the bridge saddle. if its only the open note my guess is its something to do with the nut slot angle or break angle. Bridge wise: break angle is important too is the seating of the string in the groove. Hope all these comments are helping! Jack
3. I could talk for hours about nuts. theres alot to go wrong with them but it really does depend how picky you are! check out my walkthrough on this acoustic guitar - you can apply the same principles "max hings Stonebridge": http://jacksinstrumentservices.com/my-work.html Have fun!
4. what springs to mind is the: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tools/Special_...Rescue_Kit.html as metioned before. Which part of the truss rod is stripped? the nut or the bolt part?
5. Theres so many thing which cause 50 or 60 cycle hum, ground loops... i wouldnt advise removing the earth socket for obvious reasons. Make sure you have well shilded cabling and instruments first. Foil or conductive paint are great for the insides of your guitar for sheilding against hum. Its pretty hard to avoid... single coils are usually worse for signal to noise ratio Hope this all helps jack
6. Spot on! nice picture and great quality! hard enough doing the job sometimes whist taking photos at the same time???? My fave method is to glue a piece of veneer on with a couple of blobs of PVA to a larger block of wood. Grind down one edge of the veneer to create a very good tapered shim. The taper takes care of "air pockets" meaning more of that all important tone transfer! Spot on Jack
7. Don't forget about room resonances and standing waves. My covers band went to a different rehearsal room to usual, due to where the amp was in the room (a small combo) the room loved the note A flat. a nightmare for playing the the key of A! you know how the note feels weak when you play a wrong note in the mix?? every other note was like that. Nightmare Jack
8. Hello, I'm a guitar repairer based in Salford - manchester. Some of my customers have been involved with Basschat so it would be a good idea to mingle with other 4 stringed folk (like myself) partly to spread the word about my new workshop but also to help out as best i can with technical problems. Give us a shout if you need advice or help on anything to do with setups, repairs or gear! I'm afraid im not much cop on playing technique but i can always advise on setup technique! Give us a shout at www.jacksinstrumentservices.com Take it easy -Jack
