1.
On the topic of bespoke and stepped pedalboards, I came across this Netherlands based company the other day:

    Paul Lenders Custom Pedalboards

This is my favourite looking pedalboard on there. I'm going to try and mimic the style cos I like it so much

They also make their own effects which look amazing... though no idea how they sound!
That's interesting. Thanks for the link.

I agree, stepped pedalboards are much more ergonomic (in terms of allowing error free stomping)....

  2.
Think you might have a problem buying something that shape "off the shelf" as I can't think of a generic use for it.
Perhaps take a look at companies selling aluminium extrusion by the metre, cut it off to the right length and make a pair of end panels to fit?
There's also metal conduit, usually galvanised steel - usually from electrical wholesalers and again sold by length.
I thought of that too - problem is accessibility!

Thanks for the link. Not really, no. I need something long and thin (ooo-errr).

  4. This one is probably a bit too big (in each dimension):-

  5.
I've used one from banzai that's as long as your request but is 70mm square in depth and height. I can't find it right now (just about to go watch Gorillaz) but I think Umph has a link somewhere.
I've been looking on Banzai, but can't find one!

  6. Does anyone know a supplier for a long, thin enclosure?

I need one to house 5 footswitches in a row.... so I guess about 300mm long.

It only need be about 30mm high (as a typical effect pedal) and About 60mm deep.

  7. I haven't been around these boards long enough to know the history.

I am not surprised trading has been prevalent in the past - especially given the relatively high prices of instruments (not just Rickenbackers) and the uncertainty in the economy. I agree there has been a few glimmers of optimism over the last 18 months, which ought to have seen more buoyant sales, but now, with the prospects of redundancy looming over many of us, we are suddenly much more cautious in our spending.

I would therefore also expect to see more trading, but also downward pressure on sales prices.

    Time will tell...

I couldn't condone anyone putting one of these on a real Rick tho'! ;-)

Heads up...this listing is suspicious. The seller is in Nevada, USA, however the bass will ship from 'Outside the United States'. The photos are the same ones on a well-known Chinese wholesale counterfeit site...not to mention the misspelling of words in the auction.
Maybe ask for the serial number?

  10.
As long as the limiting stays above 8kHz that's as high as you'll ever need to go.
I think the issue being described is a roll-off in the high frequencies, due the sub-optimal input impedance (which tends to form a LP filter when the guitar is connected).

  11.
I've plugged my bass into it plenty of times and haven't noticed anything amiss. Otherwise though, no, they're the only two things I can think of off the top of my head.
Hmmm. Maybe I'll give it a go....

  12.
I wonder if it's well suited to instrument level signals though, and is its impedance okay to plug an un-buffered guitar into...
I have googled and discovered that its input impedance is 10kOhm. To be suitable as an instrument input it needs to be 1MOhm. So I guess the answer is "no". The SFX unit remains the only suitable solution... so far.

  13.
I think the Lead head was a Sunn coloseum Lead as he didn't like the Bass version. But all these various Live amps, Marshall, Fender, Sunn etc all worked well, but studio work was I think Vox AC30. The important part is that Fuzz on the Neck pup.
SS73 is right. Chris's basses were not biamped (in the sense of using a cross-over to separate bass from treble frequencies), but he did have his mono bass modified to output the two pickups independently (exactly like the ric-o-sound). I have heard that regardless of the stacks on stage, in the early yes tours, Chris's sound was taken from an AC-30, hidden behind and miced up.

I also think it's true that he used the fuzz on the neck pickup (not the bridge pickup, as you'd perhaps have been more likely to think).

What I don't know is where he actually uses this fuzz - I'd have thought that most of his grind was from pushing the AC30s.
