1. Hi all Just picked up an acoustic bass from Steve today- given to me at no cost ! Steve even came to meet me at a place close to his house to guide me in through the back doubles during his own lunchtime. Then spent some time at his house discussing all things bass and looking at his toys, which I wouldn't mind having myself I must say. Some very nice basses and one or two that I wish he would have gave me as well ( !!!!! ) Offered a cup of tea too. I could have spent ages there as Steve is really easy to talk with and I really enjoyed the whole thing. Can't see how Steve could have done any more really. Top man Nice one ! Tom
2.
Best to reserve judgment till the facts come out. Mucho potential for egg on face till then.
+1 to this big time T
3. I always enjoyed playing along with 'look away' by Big Country. Anyone had any fun with 'Rio' by Duran Duran ? puzzled me at first until the penny dropped on what was happening T
4. In 1972, a WEM 1x18 cab with a WEM 40watt head. Used a vox bass through it. Sounded grim but it did the bit. Still have the vox bass, a very short and fast scale. Met Charlie Watkins (Watkins Electronic Music) years later and took a mosfet amp from his hands in his workshop at his house. He was even graceful enough to be genuinely interested in my stories of that WEM rig and my questions about the Watkins Rapiers that were flying around the scene at the time. A legend in his own lunchtime. T
5. Yes, I didn't want to hijack the other thread either, that 's why I started another one - left hand practice, or one finger per fret Appreciate the posts though and your thoughts on this topic, which has opened up a whole new can of worms to investigate CHeers Tom
6. thank you for that thoughtful reply Jennifer I'm now going to find out what the SIMANDL approach is T
7. Hi folks I posted this one up to clear up a discussion on another thread and I didn't want to hijack another topic so..... It did leave me very curious about something though. I'd appreciate the forum's views on this one please. Q. do you think one finger per fret is valid advice ? Up 'till now, I saw it as digit training and a method of increasing the span of the left hand to cope with the lower end fret spacing. I havn't researched it personally, but relied instead on the advice of the 'experts'. what do you think folks ? I've added below the discussion that prompted this question for context (sorry for the read to get to the point by the way. I'll say THANK YOU here for those that follow it through) My erroneous contribution to the other thread practice one finger per fret Hold one finger per fret then try variations of: 1, 2,3,4 1,3,2,4 1,4,2,3, etc in one direction, then the reverse order better still, get hold of a copy of Serious Electric Bass by Joel D Bartolo Hope that helps a little T that looks like left hand stuff to me and then the reply Not only is it left hand stuff, but i would add that it is bad advice. If your hands are large enough to facilitate 1 finger per fret, then great, but otherwise, you run the risk of causing yourself permanent injury for no good reason. Double bass players don't force themselves to play one finger per fret/note. Be careful with your fingernails. Keep them quite short, but not too short - they protect your fingers (so speaks someone currently unable to play because of a finger infection caused partly by having nails too short. I replied I came back to this thread to edit that you should start one finger per fret up the board nr. the 12th fret to get the patterns, before decending towards the nut to gain the reach. I realised the error too late and therefore deleted the post. However, the advice I left is from the book Serious Electric Bass by Joel D Bartolo. Jaco gives the same advice in his tuitional video. I havn't researched it beyond that point, so I can't say the advice is robustly supported by evidence. Since you claim that permanent damage will occur if this advice is followed, I''d be interested to hear your views around stretching the left hand to span the lower frets. Sorry about the thread hijack for the other hand folks. I did feel a certain justification for a reply to that post however. Love and peas T This isn't an attempt to come out on top from a discussion (promise bassbloke !) but more a 'poll' I hope What do you all think ? T

10.
that looks like left hand stuff to me
what was that about senior moments?
11.
I'd really like to see this happen, if there's anything I can do to help please let me know, I'd like it if someone could suggest and or find a venue - about time we got a London one sorted, I might be able to pursuade the chaps from the Gallery to get involved... M
pm'd you stuff is going on off thread on this so don't lose hope T
12. It's just one of those sweet lines - Midnight train to Georgia by Gladys Night and the Pips As played by Bob Babbit T
13. Why, thank you Shep. That SA450 is going nowhere without me. Period. Definately one of my better buys. Thanks for everything today, including the intro. to an area of sound I'd like to explore more, now I've been shown how it's done. No worries dealing with Shep folks. Sound. Cheers Tom
14. This is a great day. Why ? Went to Nottingham today and collected a Markbass SA450 from Shep. Yes, got it !!! Better still, we went to a local friendly place where I could hear the SA450 properly. It was everything I expected and I'm totally chuffed. And I didn't get lost in Nottingham. But Shep made the day, being a generous host with his time and also his kit. Well met. Welcome for a beer at mine anytime. Nice one Shep ! Cheers Tom
15. Hi there You could go for the option of strengthening your back with the aid of a physio, if that's appropriate for you to do. Not the quick fix, but it could potentially open up your options T
16. Oh my, Oh my, Oh my. Suddenly I'm thinking 'what can I sell ?' T
17. Apologies to billphreets. This is not a personal attack on him, as I realise he is acting with goodwill to all B.C.'ers. In fact, I applaude the will for genuine help and I will support it in any way I can. However, as the saying goes, the way to hell is paved with good intentions. Good vibes to you all T
18.
Still not sure if I really want to sell!!! They are soooo good, but recent purchase of an LMII means I need to sell something. To be honest the 4x8 is sufficient for my needs as the amp goes through PA in the loudest of the bands I play in, so the 1x15 isn't used and I'm too old to be asked to do stadiums!!. Might get a Mark Bass 2x10 cab though, in which case the 4x8 might have to go... Got any suggestions for a "one cab does all" that's not stupid money, can't afford some of the thingsI see on here and...despite what Tresume says, I'm really not worth it!
Nobody is too old to do stadiums !!!!!! If someone offered you the chance to do Wembley you would still consider it, even if you knew it would give you a heart attack !!!! T
19. This is potentially dangerous. Do no take this advice. If you have concerns about your health or any part of your body, seek the advice of a qualified health care professional who can examine you and offer you the best advice for you. I can appreciate that many musicians think that some things are common knowledge. Some are. But many are not. You only have one body. This life is not a rehearsal for another one. (this is not a religious statement). If you take this advice, it will be cold comfort for you when you discover you have been addressing the wrong problem at some point in the future. You are human, not a machine. Your needs are individual to you. Make sure you get the advice that is best for you I do know about these things and work in this field T Edit: anyone that has concerns in these matters can PM me. I am frequently very busy, so might take a short time to get back to you. However, I will answer all genuine enquiries. T
