1. Pen and paper. I spend way too much time staring into a computer screen as it is I can read music (slowly) but I find transcribing really tricky. I've got a really good ear training app for intervals, chords etc which I always use on the tube but there doesn't seem to be anything for transcribing...
2. Yeah I checked out the Mono bags. Call me old fashioned but I'm not keen on that "quilted" look. The Gator bags look nice but at 129cm they're very long! My current gig bag (a red & black Sandberg monstrosity that is, thankfully, falling apart) is 123cm long and I spend a lot of time stooping to avoid door frames, train handrails etc. And I'm a short arse!
3. I've started getting into writing out walking basslines from classic recordings and it's been very satisfying and useful. I'd like to develop my general transcribing skills & was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for books or apps that could help me with that?
4. Sorry to bring up the whole gig bag thing again but I've trawled all the old threads on here and on Talk Bass and still haven't found what I'm after. I just bought a Protec Contego from Thomann which arrived today. It's a fantastic case and very well made but it's way too heavy and bulky for carrying around on public transport so I'm going to send it back. What I want is something decent quality that is lightweight and simply designed. The old top-of-the-range Ritters were ok but now they make them with a horrible criss-cross trim which looks mighty crap. Just a plain, black, bass-shaped design with quality materials that won't fall apart after 6 months. Is that too much to ask for???
5. Sorry I haven't replied, I've been away. I wouldn't want to split the rig just yet, maybe a couple of months down the line if it still hasn't sold...
6. Update: my full size double bass has now gone to a good home and there's a big empty space in my practise room . I'd be up for a trading the Hellborg for a 3/4 double bass of value around £3600. The guy I sold the upright to is paying in installments so I'll have all the cash by March...
7. Yeah my Sandberg sounds incredible through it. Wish I had the money to keep it AND buy a new double bass!
8. FINAL PRICE DROP: £1250 The buyer I found turned out to be a complete time waster, arranged to pick up twice but didn't make it either time. Second time he didn't even bother to let me know! So he's definitely not getting it Anyway I got the rig set up to test before he came round and played my Sandberg through it... sounded amazing! Played my SLB200 through it, sounds unbelievable! So I guess the phantom buyer did me a favour as he's reminded me just how good this thing is. I understand people are skint at the moment and can't afford to stump up the cash but I'd be a fool to let it go for for such a small amount of money. I'll just have to find another way to fund my future purchases!
9.
I bought a little foldup porter trolley from Maplin for as many peanuts as you can get for £19. I hope yours is better. Mine states 70Kg load, but my 13Kg Markbass is already too much. However it turned out perfect for my little "portable PA" thing that I use for busking
After just over a year the rubber on the tyres of my Maplin trolley have completely disintegrated rendering it useless. I've tried fixing them and I've looked for replacement wheels but couldn't extend the life of it. Very frustrating as the rest of the trolley is still working fine and it was perfect for the job. I reckon spending a bit more on a better quality trolley will save you money in the long run and reduce waste. I think I'll be getting myself one of those fishing trolleys, they look just the job!
10. Really happy with my Full Circle, it transformed the sound of my SLB200. I'd like to try the Wilson or the Shadow, are they significantly better than the FC?
11. Anyway managed to sort out the problem with cable ties! Not the most attractive of solutions but does the job and solves the issue of the wire getting squashed in the case. Gonna figure out how to mount my K&K preamp now, I'm thinking heavy duty velcro strips...
12. For Monday's gig I mounted the jack across the back of the tailpiece at the bottom and tied it to the wire that holds the tailpiece in place (and goes around the endpin). I used wire ties and it worked well enough and would probably work even better with cable ties. The only drawback with this method was that when I packed the bass down, the end of the cable that goes into the pickup was getting sqaushed by the side of the case. I could unplug the cable from the pickup every time but I'm worried that the connection will loosen after a while. I'll get in touch with Roger about that jack clamp and I'll try Phil's ingenious method too. Thanks again guys!
13. Gigged with my new SLB/Fishman combo last night and it sounded great! It went through a Boss TU-3 pedal and straight into my Genz Benz Shuttle. I'm not sure if EUBs produce as much subsonic signal as an acoustic so maybe that's why it didn't need the high pass? I bought a K&K dual preamp to blend the signal of the built-in Yamaha pickup with the Fishman but I think I agree with Phil, the FC sounds great by itself! Just need to figure out how to securely mount the thing now, I did a bodge job using wire ties but it needs to be more secure. Anyone got any ideas?
