1.
Yes, but if you knew what you were playing, that's 50% of any effect right there....
Very true, should be double blind to be truly scientific. Although how you'd do that I don't know!
2. Yes someone needs to do the blind test and clear this up once and for all! Hopefully that'll bring the price of vintage P-basses down and then I'll be able to afford to buy one :)Except I'll then be buying an inferior bass I have to say I'm not keen on the look of those Roadworns, I think there's something a bit naff about artificially reliced basses. I'm after a rosewood fretboard anyway, I just don't get on with maple ones. Maybe I'll look at some of the RIs, what are people's opinions on those? Let me guess... they vary in quality right?
3. Sounds like I'm going to be trying out some basses in the near future then!
My profile picture shows me in Denmark Street playing a 66 P Bass. It is WITHOUT doubt the single best instrument I've EVER played. The feel was perfect, and the sound was bliss.
There's a '66 P up on the Bass Gallery website for sale at £4500. Worth it for a good one?
4. Hi all, I've been on the hunt for an early 70s P-bass for the last couple of weeks and it's crazy how much they're changing hands for these days. I suppose it's because 50s/60s models are so expensive now so collectors are looking at 70s basses as future investments. It's bloody annoying. As I'm a bassist I want to get one for it's sound rather than for it's potential future value! So I'm now thinking of looking at 80s P-basses even though what I'm really after is that classic Paul Jackson, Headhunters sound. So it got me thinking, can I get the same vintage tone from an 80s P-bass and are 80s ones better made than 70s ones anyway (as I've read on a discussion on GearSlutz.com)? What era do you think are the best made P-basses from and are the vintage versions really worth the money? Is that the sound of a can of worms being opened?

7. Yes I do but I can't discuss that here or else I'll break the house rules. The final price is £1250, if you can give me that before Tuesday then it yours!
8. I just bought a Gewa massaranduba bow from Harry on Basschat and it seems pretty good. But I'm new to all this arco business so I've only got the cheap bow I bought at Footes to compare it to. In fact I'm new to the double bass in general so a double bass & bow day would be awesome!
9. Happy days! I've got a friend going to Washington D.C. in Feb to see his family so he's gonna bring one back for me
10.
Did you consider the other Protec one? http://www.thomann.de/gb/protec_deluxe_e_bass_gig_bag.htm I've had one for about 18 months and can't really fault it considering the price and 3 year warranty.... I mostly tend to use a protection racket 7051 now as the pockets are a bit bigger, and I can carry my amp head and zoom b3 and all the cables and whatnot all in the gig bag - but rarely have to carry it far.
Yeah that looks pretty good. A bit roomy for my bass so it might be sliding around a bit in there but it definitely goes on the "maybe" list. Who'd have thought buying a gig bag would be such an arduous process?
11.
I think it's the EM8S as it's got the extra pocket on the neck. Weirdly the Sadowsky is almost $15 cheaper.
Now that looks like exactly what I'm after! Just the small problem of getting hold of one in the UK...
12. Thanks guys that's some great advice. I especially like the idea of starting with a couple of bars here and there. Otherwise it's just too daunting! Gonna start on some simple lead lines like Bag's Groove and build up from that. Cheers!
13. Hmm just seen this - http://www.sadowsky....s-gig-case.html It's got a big Sadowsky logo on it which I don't like but I could live with, it's cheap so I wonder how well made it is, it only seems to be available in the US which means shipping costs and taxes and there's no specs on the website. Not even dimensions This is the kind of thing I'm after but high quality and available in the UK. Does anything like it exist??
14. I really don't see the point of these hybrid semi-rigid cases. The Protec is so heavy and cumbersome I might as well be carrying a hard case. There's no chance I'd get on a plane with it and I doubt it would protect my bass from baggage vandalers whereas I've always sailed onto flights with a soft case. I'm beginning to think that the people who design gig bags are trying to make them look as fancy and "stylish" as possible to try and justify charging more money and to make them stand out from the competition. A bit like rucksacks manufacturers. I just want a simply designed, durable, lightweight soft case with good sized, practical pockets, no naff logos emblazoned all over it or fancy stitching or luminous pink piping FFS!
15. Yeah I don't think I explained myself very well sorry. What I was looking for was a book or app that has transcribing exercises that start simple and get progressively more difficult. I have a great app for ear training (i.e. identifying intervals and chords etc) but I can't find anything for transcribing. Maybe I should just get a list of basic melodies together and transcribe them. Or maybe I've found a money making opportunity! Probably the first one Cheers for the software suggestions though, I will definitely check out Transcribe.
