here's my board as it stands now. it's been a few years of evolution but i'm fairly happy with it at the mo.

the signal chain is:

bbe sonic maximiser
(this adds encredibly useable soft & warm lows, and lovely highs to my precision's natural clanky bite)

this feeds into....

bright onions twin blendable looper
(i love this box. it's the heart of my pedal board. 2 loops, 1 master kill switch, and each loop has a wet/dry blend pot so i can preserve as much of my original tone as i choose. i'm thinking of modding the master kill switch to be an inverter so i can switch from loop 1 to 2 easier.)
the two loops are:

loop 1 - 40%dry / 60%wet
rebel effects wooly mammoth clone
(for all that muse type over the top dirt, incredible pedal)
eh mini q tron
(envelope filter)
boss odb3
(used for gentle overdrive. i may lose this soon when i find something better.)

loop 2 - 60%dry / 40%wet
dha vt1-mk3-bass
(ah, my favourite!! my gorgeous valve overdrive. set up for the sweet spot, when i dig in it really growls back. awesome tone.)
eh double muff
(gritty punching upper mids in single muff mode. all out nastyness in double muff mode.)

then out of the looper to....

bbe sonic stomp
(it's an optical soft knee compressor. very transparent. i don't have the comp up too high, just a touch but it really tightens up my p bass sound.)

there ya go. as you can see, i like my dirty sounds. on most gigs i normally use effects here and there to lift the bass (choruses, middle 8's and other peoples solos), where neccessary, of course. i am a believer in the 'less is more' approach to my bass and use of effects and my toys give me the flexibility i need.

any suggestions for a replacement for the boss odb3 are welcome. i'm looking for an overdrive rather than full on distortion.

you've got some good stuff goin on their my friend, nice board. You've said gentle OD and assuming you are not wanting a fcuk off expensive Darkglass for that, then I would recommend Max's micro Red Dragon - very pedal board friendly 1590a size and good boost, tone, saturation.

It's not sloppy playing to need mute the strings. It's not uncommon to get sympathetic vibrations from
the lower strings, and if you are playing on the upper strings how are you going to mute them with the
left hand? You need to use the right hand to do this. Muting of the strings should come from both hands,
depending on what and where you are playing. But the need to mute the strings you aren't playing isn't
due to sloppy playing....I certainly wouldn't call Jaco or Patitucci sloppy and they mute with the right hand all
the time.
yeah, I see muting as one of the most important skills I have developed, and not sure that's a sign of me being a sloppy player or just a fact of playing a stringed instrument like the bass?? I can be obsessive in the studio using both right and left hands to dampen strings. In many ways that desire to limit the sound produced just to the note played dictates whether I anchor or float. I am not disagreeing with JTUK but just giving my perhaps odd take on something all my fingers seem to be involved in and not just those involved in generating the actual note I am playing - maybe that makes me very sloppy? I tend to think more OCD.

The Legacy strings are Rotosound Rotobass in different packaging. Amazing value for money at £7.95 compared to £11-14 for the Rotosound version.

one of my guilty pleasures is buying dead cheap 4 and 5 string sets of Legacy. I actually really really like them, keep trying others but keep coming back. Suspected they were Rotosound nickels, now I know.

It's what Robert Trujillo requested... so, I guess, it's what Robert Trujillo got.
FWIW Warwick do some incredible finishes.
this is what I think. Robert asked for and got it. Job done. If you look at the Custom Shop gallery there are some astoundingly beautiful "classic" Warwicks. My main issue with Warwick is the price and resale value.

I had a German Corvette $$ 5. It was flawlessly made, just a couple of small things put me off such as the neck profile, string spacing and absence of fret markers. I think if it wasn't for that I might even still have it.

I like the product but the marketing puts me off (same as Apple).

i have a $$5, occasionally after a few weeks on the Jazz I think, I will move it on. Then i play it. Since I first got a Warwick in about 89 I have just loved something about them. Back playing mine now in advance of a wee trip to the studio and its shown me again how much I love it. Still wouldn't buy one of the mental finish ones/

6. i suspect given what you say about price you aint in the Iron Ether market nor the £150 Source Audio market, but I am interested in this (and the IE Nimbus).

7. i did quite a bit of research into compressors when I was buying a new one. Famously Ovnilab (Bongomania) has a very mixed review, with an apparent flaw/fault in stomp mode preventing him putting it near the top of his list. He knows what he is talking about and does not seem to identify the issue the Amazon review does.

http://www.ovnilab.com/reviews/tcnovadyn.shtml

no talk of missing "mojo" or issues generally with digital compressors, indeed Bongo makes the point that while maybe not as quirky as some analog units, it doesn't sound digital at all. I dont know why TC discontinued. Haven't heard whether this is because of an issue. Also I note that the reviewer is using it for guitar, maybe a different impact? I am interested in picking up a 2nd hand one.

I saw them at Edinburgh Corn Exchange a few years back and they were awesome! Would dearly love to see them again!

It's Bill's tone and physicality that i love. He's a great musician but he has a way of playing that I love. i saw them at the Venue in Edinburgh in 87-88 Introduce Yourself tour with Chuck, and then Network (Tollcross) in 1990 on Real Thing tour (I am sure Sepultura supported??). I saw them many times again including some of the best gigs ever at the Barrowlands. It was great to see them again at the Corn Exchange in 2009.

Thanks Rich, Yes you are probably correct in thinking that about the volume. It is still loud and can handle some medium sized gigs and sounds great DI'd. Its a pro piece of kit ideal for pro muso's on ships, functions and the likes. Thanks for the advice.
no probs mate. I had a Workingman pro and could only dream of the Redhead. Top quality kit.

10. i used an SWR combo for many years. Great kit, very good price. My only feedback is that these days everyone seems obsessed with volume and headroom. Your ad seems to focus on a negative in saying it's not loud enough (I assume you are in a death metal band?!) Maybe that's worrying people? It shouldn't cause these things should be more than loud enough for most small to medium gigs.

What's the problem? Get one of your kids to buy you an early Christmas present.

I can imagine the look on Mark's face when a 5 year old wee Scottish lassie comes in looking for a Take it Away deal on a Wood and Tronics 5.
