I was actually there for that program. It was just up the road from where I lived. They used a disused station and brought all the artists in from Manchester Central Station by steam train.
Oh wow, what an experience! Sorry, I missed it being only two days old 😀
There are a couple of other bits on YouTube - one is a longer bit of performance, the other is the train journey.
Chorlton-cum-Hardy - now that's a name for a Blues town if ever there was one!

Been fascinated by this for years, partly due to the fact that it was two days after I was born, but mainly as it is such a wonderfully 'odd' concept. There is also a longer film available on YouTube for those who may be interested.

Neil Young and the Cowboy Junkies are Canadian, Young has spent a large part of his life in the US but started his musical career in Canada and The Junkies still are based in Canada. Just sayin'.....🇨🇦
...which is in the continent of North America. I think for a concept as broad as Americana many Canadian acts would fit in, as do some influences from Mexico.

Isn't it all about music influenced by 'roots' styles - Bluegrass, Zydeco, Cajun, Blues? From memory, when I was working in the record business, there was an Alt Country movement - Steve Earle, Cowboy Junkies etc. a kind of antidote to the other development of the time, New Country. Alt Country then merged with other sub genres, a couple of big acts (Springsteen) went back to a more traditional sound, and a new marketing tool was born.

And it’s funny how it’s all come around again. I remember The Rockingbirds doing country rock / Americana in the 1990s but not gaining much traction beyond the true believers. They were amazing live though, and if they were still going now they’d definitely be seen as keepers of the flame.
Yes, it has been a long, slow burn, from the early days of Alt Country.

I played in a bluegrass band in 2022-23 - mostly bluegrass but some country music too - Johnny Cash, etc. I was surprised that here in South Wales there are a lot of bands playing Americana and it was fairly easy to get bookings and decent audiences. Just a couple of weeks ago we went to see Texas Tick Fever who do a range of Americana styles and the venue was packed.
Does seem to be growing, which is another great reason to explore!

Elles Bailey is one that immediately springs to mind, as is, young, local band, Longstay.
Yes, guess I'm coming to it from the Blues side, which is where Elles Bailey started (along with Alice Armstrong and a couple of others). Looks like there is a fair bit of crossover. Will check out Longstay, thanks.

Sounds like a good project! I've been in a couple of Americana/Americana-adjacent bands. This site has always been good for what's happening on the scene, if you've not seen it already - https://americana-uk.com/
Thanks - yes, been following their Facebook page - need to delve deeper into their own website, thanks.

I have a bit of an idea for the next band I want to put together, and thought it would probably fall under the Americana label (not that I am one for labels, but they do serve a purpose when putting something together and then marketing that act).
Anybody here playing in such a band? Is there a 'scene' (it looks like there is a bit of one from my Facebook feed)?
Who are some of the bands out there?
Thanks in advance!

Picked up a Cry Baby at a local hose clearance place for £3. Exchanged next day at a Brighton guitar shop for a set of D'addario chrome bass strings.
I have no idea how I disposed of my 1970s Electro Harmonix Poly chorus, but I know I wouldn't have sold it for much.

The Kiesel family are a quirky bunch. How was Carvins reliability,
I've had a Carvin BX500 for years, and my brother has had a combo for a similar time. No problem with either. However, there was a big reliability issue which the guys at the stockist at the time, Bass Gear, became aware of. Most of the problems happened early in ownership, so if there's secondhand gear out there working I'd say it would be low risk.

@BigRedX has good knowledge of unusual designs. He may be able to shed some light on wether it is original or a custom job.

Only drawback is trying to find suitable strings for the two Ibbys.

Have you tried Newtone Strings? Lots of folk on here rate them highly (I've only used them for guitar), and they will make custom sizes.

This was one of the first videos I saw when I typed in short scale basses. I love watching these two and you can tell one of them does not like short scales lol
Poor take by Scott. I'm not a Scott hater, and think he does a great job of promoting his brand, and bass in general. But I think it's a shame he uses his platform here with no regard to the damage he could be causing (proven by the need for this thread).
I'm a 34" scale player with gas for a Nordy Acinonyx.

I enjoyed it. The suspension of disbelief didn't bother me as I felt it was a short cut to representing success of the band/project. Thought the music was cleverly constructed.

Enjoy your basses. Don't ask others to validate your choices.

If @LowB_FTW suggestion doesn't work, anything by Wasp - they can sting multiple times.
As a serious response, pretty sure Michael M Keegan of Therapy? Tunes his 4 string down to C - great workout for your left hand down at the first fret!

This could end up being neverending. I'll just suggest one young multi-instrumentalist, although for me his real talent is his guitar playing - Tom Misch. Great jazz chops, a lovely feel. Not 100% convinced by his finished productions, but his playing is sublime.

I hadn't forgotten him as I could've easily had him in there too plus many more jazzers and funakateers so I tried to limit myself to just 10
Just love his explosive snare hits - drives Hard Bop like no other.

My top 10 , in no order; Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Billy Cobham (ridiculously low on the list), Jo Jones, Tony Williams, Jack de Johnette, Bill Bruford, Dennis Chambers. Yeah it's heavily geared towards jazzers but IMO the great jazz drummers are a breed apart.
No Elvin?! 😯

Not sure how well a mosh pit would go at a jazz gig 😅
Difficult to make a mosh pit with the average numbers at jazz gig 🤨
