1. Got through the whole year without GAS to speak of... now starting to feel yearnings for a G-B Shuttle or perhaps NeoPak head. I still adore the SM900, but the damn thing's heavier than my cabs for feck's sake...

  2. Pros:

Sound. (I saw a band at the Bristol harbour festival the other week, the bassist was using a Shuttle combo with an extension cab... the best bass sound I've heard in ages.)
Cons:

I haven't got one. :)
Just when you think your GAS is sorted...
For me, playing music, specifically gigging, whether it be to 2 people or 200 is a life-affirming experience - we've had a couple of long breaks (6 months or so) and I hate it - in a sense gigging is what I play music for.
I don't intend to stop playing/gigging until they screw the lid down. Even then, I shall be pestering Keith Moon and Jimi Hendrix for a jam. :)

Must... not... make... juvenile toilet gag...
    :)

  5. If memory serves, Wilkes were among the first to offer them in any number. I've never seen a Jaydee with them, apart from that sale one! :)
They're not an over the counter one-size-fits-all thing... have a word with your friendly neighbourhood luthier. They won't stop all damage to a fretless, you'll still get normal string wear along the board, but it will stop the end of the board getting knackered from smacking the string against it. And it will add the slap's percussive element that you get from a fretted bass.

  6.
Nice bass - I've got Rich's old one - being refurbished at John's as we speak!
Cool -- what's he doing to it Nick? And has he found the ultra-hi-tech precision engineered pickup mounting system yet?? :)

  7. Anyone know of anywhere in the UK where I can source a footswitch for my SM-900 head? Ideally without having to take out a bank loan to buy it :)
Alternatively (better?), is a schematic diagram of said footswitch available anywhere? I'm handy with a soldering iron so I'd quite happily have a crack at making one.

Jeff Berlin w/Bill Bruford - Joe Frazier
Marcus Miller - Eric (towards the end, immediately after the key change, where he trades licks with Hiram Bullock)

  9.
I thought I saw a similar topic once, but couldn't find anything when I searched.

There is a possibility I may have talked myself into a sort of casual jamming type situation with some more experienced musicians - it's not concrete yet, but could happen. I've been honest in saying how short a time I've been playing, how limited my abilities are etc. etc. but obviously the prospect of doing this thing is still a little daunting. I was thinking about it all this morning, and figured that there's not much I can do in a short time about my level; but it could make a big difference if I can somehow gel with the drummer asap if/when we start playing.

Wondering if anyone has any tips for doing this? I'm sure there's no magic trick to it all, but this is an area of bass playing that I have no knowledge of and would rather not test their patience any more than necessary.

    Cheers.
I haven't read the whole thread, so apologies if this has been said, but this is how I'd approach it.

Keep your eyes and ears wide open.

Watch his kick foot, lock in with it.

Make eye contact with him (although not so much that he starts thinking you fancy him, of course).

You should get a good idea of his feel fairly quickly -- when he puts in a fill, go with it if you can, it sounds wicked and can work really well.

Befriend him, buy him beer, make sure he reciprocates :)

Enjoy.
There are few things better or more satisfying than playing with a good drummer. A good rhythm section will make an average band sound great, but a sloppy rhythm section will make even the best band suck.

EDIT: just read through. +1 for following the drummer, if the guitard goes wrong then that's his lookout. Keep the rhythm section solid.
