Hi all

This is my old bass -- the bridge is actually a Wilkinson and the preamp is an EMG BQS 3-band eq. And if I had the dosh, I'd consider buying it back!

1 - Playing to 3000 people on a gorgeous summer night in Stroud.
2 - It Bites at the Astoria on the Once Around The World tour.
3 - The Proms in the Park at Berkeley Castle some years ago... the orchestra played a stunning rendition of Elgar's 'Nimrod', when they hit the crescendo at the end, I am not ashamed to say I cried. Just beautiful.

When manflu strikes, I always reach for my DIY lemsip... 2 tsp of runny honey, 2 tsp lemon juice, 3 disprin, boiling water, and a good slug of whisky.
Not overly convenient for a gig, true, but it always makes me feel a bit better.

Yup. I pulled all the frets form the neck of my Yamaha RBX765A, and Jon Shuker was kind enough to finish it all off when he built my bass. He did a beautiful job, as you'd expect from a good luthier. The bass has worked out very nicely, plenty of mwah. It has a rosewood board, so I've tried to avoid too much wear by putting some nice slippery Elixirs on. I can't stand the feel of flats.

I had Barts in my old Sei Flamboyant 5. They sounded awful. Really woolly. The eq was a nice 18v Schack, so there was no problem there. If I'd kept the bass, the Barts would have definitely been replaced.

Chill out ladies, it's only a volume pedal.

I use the Boss FV-50, I like it a lot. Silent operation, nice taper, stereo, and it's got a handy tuner output too.

According to the blurb on the Cranes site, the fingerboard is 'compressed' ebony. I reckon you'd probably be ok with roundwounds (or maybe half- or pressure-wounds to be on the safe side). I only ever used roundwounds on my fretless Jaydee, and it hardly marked at all over the 20+ years I had it!

De-fret it baby, you know it makes sense!

Bassist got absorbed by its big brother Guitarist mag. It soldiered on as a token section of that mag for a while, and Roger Newell even carried the title 'Bass Editor' for a while -- it must have been the easiest job in the world, as the average bass content was around 5 pages of Squier reviews. This slowly became 4 and then 3 pages, and then disappeared completely.

£450 BIN on a well-used bass that's £500 brand new, what a cracker.
I like the bit that says:

But apparently this bass "has supported major artists such as 90's rock band Thunder, pop singer Lucie Silvas and x factor duo journey south". So that makes it worth [i]loads[/i] more.

I built something just like this a few years back. It works a treat and is well worth the effort.
As regards the board -- [u][b]don't use MDF or chip[/b][/u], they weigh a ton. Get some good marine ply, it's half the weight of MDF and is completely stiff. For a carpet covering, I recommend carpet tiles.
I was going to make another platform but never got round to it -- bloody lazy, that's my problem. But I still have the Platfoam that I bought for it, and some leftover ply that's about the right size, and some more carpet tiles that I [s]pinched[/s] borrowed from work. Anybody want one made?

EDIT: and Monz is right, the Auralex foam is miles harder than 'any old' foam. Don't try using strips of ordinary stuff, the cab will squash them flat and be very unsteady.
