1. Hi Andy, I've strung a 5 string fretless E to C once. My experience was that the strings you use are vitally important (I used Thomastik Infeld groundwounds), and a shorter scale length will allow you a thicker gauge, which might help eliminate the thin sound. I also found I had to adjust my right hand techniques to deal with the thinner gauge, so perhaps you'll find your tone improves with experience too. I love the look of your Stambaugh - I've got a custom 5 string singlecut on order at the moment! Best of luck, Sam
2. All PMs replied to, still available
3. The guys at the Gallery dressed the Devon's neck really nicely. Not sure how they measure up price wise, but the quality's great.
4. There's a dark coloured veneer between the redwood and the bodywood, which is the rare (sustainable) and lovely Port Orford Cedar - http://en.wikipedia....aris_lawsoniana Very robust, warm and strong sound. This is Chris' dream tonewood that matched my specs - I wanted something versatile with added warmth. We discussed koa and mahogany, but as both woods can be inconsistent (although I've only had good experiences with koa), and I wanted something lightweight, this wood was a perfect choice. You're right, there are two outputs, I'm having the Ghost piezo system fitted, and thought I'd make the bass midi capable. Yup, redwood dot markers! A little extra expense, but worth it to tie the bass together. We had been keeping some redwood back for the pickup covers, but might now have them made of the same maple as the neck. thanks for your questions! Here's the other pics Chris sent me:
5. Hi all, the bass has developed a lot since my last post, so thought I'd update the photos. The bass has just got back from the finishers and it's looking wild! I can't recommend Chris Stambaugh highly enough - a really nice guy, ready to give advice when asked but also allowing for a total custom job, there was no extra charge to have this custom shape. Not too long now until the bass ships - can't wait!
6. As I have my custom Stambaugh bass being finished very soon, I'm doing my final price drop to get this thing sold ASAP! As much as I love it, the Stambaugh's more important For sale: a top end, mint condition EUB, the NS Design CR5M. Comes with the NS gigbag, the tripod stand, and an unbranded bow worth £150. Versatile, portable, great sounds (beautiful pizz and arco tones, fretless tones if using the magnetic pickups) - SUCH a high quality instrument. I bought it before the summer last year thinking I'd need it for a couple of big projects, and needed to be able to transport it on the underground. I now find that I'm not really needing it, and tend to rent a van if I need to move my kit around, so will free some cash up for a new lighter amp and a custom bass guitar that's soon to arrive. For those of you not common with the nomenclature, NS stands for Ned Steinberger, the CR stands for Czech Republic (where this and many other high quality instruments are made), 5 is the number of strings, and M stands for magnetic pickups (alongside the piezo pickups). Here's the blurb from the NS Design website (http://thinkns.com/i...ents/crbass.php): Overview The CR Series electric upright bass, with its exceptional versatility and tone quality, is fast becoming an indispensable tool for the serious bassist. The lean, solid-body CR Series bass takes its place in a long history of fine instruments crafted in the Czech Republic. Available in 4 and 5 stringed models, the CR Series is made from select maple and ebony. The full scale fingerboard is graduated for consistent response from note to note, with adjustable relief and bridge height to suit all playing styles. Our Polar™ bridge pickup system combines great sound with directional sensitivity, for a rich and expressive response to pizzicato and arco technique. Optional EMG magnetic pickups expand the range to include classic electric bass sounds. According to Bass Player magazine, the Czech made CR Series "boasts impeccable craftsmanship from a country with a reputation for quality upright bass building. It's clean aesthetics, excellent playability, and great sound put it ahead of the pack." MAPLE BODY AND NECK: The body and neck of the CR Series Double Bass are crafted of solid European hard maple, with a flame maple face. The neck has a traditional upright shape, but with extended access to the upper register of the fingerboard. The solid-body body design enhances sustain and clarity, and is resistant to the effects of temperature change and humidity. EBONY FINGERBOARD: The seasoned ebony fingerboard is hand graduated to insure that each note is even and buzz free. An adjustable truss rod allows for precise relief adjustment for different strings and playing style. Small dots across the neck provide accurate position markers. POLAR BRIDGE PICKUP SYSTEM: The Polar pickups can sense either lateral or vertical string vibration - or both! Set in the lateral mode, the pickup has unparalleled sensitivity in the direction of the bow. In the vertical mode, plucked notes are remarkably even and sustained. EMG MAGNETIC PICKUPS: The low-impedance EMG pickups incorporate individually adjustable coils and neodymium magnets. Each coil is buffered separately for a full sound quality with very low noise. (Magnetic pickups pare optional. Only models marked with the letter M have magnetic coils.) ACTIVE EQ AND MIXER: Controls include volume, a blend control for magnetic and piezo pickups, a toggle switch to select the mode of the Polar pickup, and individual bass EQ & treble EQ controls. The 18 volt power supply insures plenty of reserve overhead for full dynamics. ADJUSTABLE BRIDGE: Two screws in the back of the body are used to adjust the bridge up and down. This allows the instrument to be set up to meet the requirements of many different playing styles. Specification LENGTH: 132 cm (52") WEIGHT: 4.8 kg (10.5 lbs.) 7. Top bloke, honest and reliable. Trade without worries! Best of luck with the trade Jamie, speak soon mate
8. I've opted for clear urethane spray finish, though I'm not sure exactly what type, I've left that up to Chris Stambaugh. I wanted something that would protect it, and I prefer the look of a glossy finish.
9. Wow, that walnut is stunning! Yeah I found them really good too. This is the original pic from them, so hoping the colour will be similar to this
10. I suppose this could also be put in the build diaries section, but I will do a proper post on there when there's more to show and tell. For now, this is just about the topwood. Hi all, As requested by Eubassix, I thought I'd post a couple of pictures of my custom build Stambaugh. These were apparently taken a couple of weeks ago, with the bass in the 'cookie cutter' phase, i.e. not yet rounded and carved. Perfect to show off a stunning piece of redwood I chose from oregonwildwoods. It's from a dug up redwood, these sort of trees are rarely if ever logged anymore, so some enterprising folk are diggin up the old treestumps left by the loggers decades ago. I chose this piece as I particularly like the mix of really deep, fairly even flaming and the angled grain. The photos don't do the hue of the wood justice, the redness and richness will really come out once it's got a finish on it. Still, it's looking pretty fine! Hope you like them
11. I can vouch for the quality of these basses - I have a Devon fretless 5 string for sale. They're fairly rare beasties over here, but they sound awesome. Have a bump on me!

If anyone seriously interested wants to look/try this bass out, you're more than welcome. A fairly unknown manufacturer over here I know but the sound quality and looks of it are second to none! The kettle's always on and you never know there may even be a digestive or shortbread around too

Other than that it looks like a fantastic intrument
The fret lines are maple - I understand that you can stain them to a very similar colour to the rosewood, so don't let that stop you
