2. Anyone who knows what they're talking about like to add a comment?
 3.
I'm glad you like Ampegs, someone has to buy them coz personally I think they sound sh*t It's all about (solid state) Eden for me thesedays
Urghhh!
 4.
Yes, I do. Ner ner ner...
Well I don't believe you. I tried the setup you boast about and it was a flimsy imposter. Try A/B ing the two and you'll find out that you have an extremely weak alternative to the real thing, wether you like it or not!
 5.
Well, as an ex-Ampeg owner, my Markbass and Sansamp do the job. All the tone, a fraction of the weight. I'd say IMHO, but that doesn't seem to be where this thread's at...so that's a definite. Anyone who disagrees is clearly kidding themselves...
So you get the exact full tube sound of an svt 2 pro with that? Bullshit. Go get a line 6 lowdown, they do ampeg too!
 6. I was the owner of an all valve Ampeg SVT 2 pro head. I loved the tone but felt it was too big and heavy, and needed revalving every 2 years etc.......... 'Buy a lighter, more compact amp I thought,' 'I'll get a good enough tone with half the weight and size.' I sold it and bought an Ashdown ABM 500, which was a good enough amp but not a patch on the SVT 2. I sold that and went through a series of hybrid and solid state amps (Ashdown, Trace Elliot, Warwick)regretting every day selling the SVT. It was like selling a Ferrari and buying a Vauxhall Corsa. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I've just gone full circle and bought another SVT 2 Pro and am again totally blown away by the tone of it. Balls to the weight or size etc... It is the best tone you'll ever, ever get. Many people on these forums seem to be kidding themselves, and others, by pretending you can get 'that' tone out of these little bass heads or portable combos. YOU CAN'T I'M AFRAID! If you care about tone and power, buy an all valve Ampeg head, it's the dogs bra!
 7.
I would have thought that any of the ampeg pro series would be able to pretty much nail the valve grit sound. I only have the bass driver DI, which is advertised as a DI, a pre-amp and a stompbox! It is a really good tool if you like the tone it gives you (some complain that it gives a very scooped sound). I personally think its more a preamp and DI than a stompbox as the speaker simulation drastically changes the character of the sound when you turn it on and off. For me its generally always on or not on at all. The bass driver is very good at clean, slighty gritty sounds but if you have a valve preamp already it might take away rather than add to your sound. I think it works best with solid state amps and as preamp for a passive basses. It really is a bit of an Ampeg emulator, so if you have an Ampeg already, I'm not sure it is that useful. I hear that the Vt bass is a lot better and less scooped sounding than the bass driver, but it doesn't have an xlr out so it isn't a DI box. I've not tried it yet so can't comment, but from what I've heard it is better than the bass driver at nailing the classic Ampeg grit. I would maybe suggest trying to set the gain on your amp a bit higher to drive your preamp tubes a bit, or try a dedicated overdrive pedal, perhaps one with a tube to get a more authentic tube overdrive. I hope that is some help.
Thankyou very much. Very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to put me straight, cheers.
 8. I have an Ampeg SVT 4 Pro and to be honest, love it as an amp. I've joined a tribute band and need a more valvey/gritty sound. I've been looking at the Sansamp products and have become a bit confused by them all to be honest. Some are DI's, some are pedals.... are the pedals DI's too..... I mean do they send the 'sound' to the PA like the DI box ones claim too? Anyone out there any recommendations? I use only a chorus pedal at the mo throught the effects loop. Could the Sansamp VT pedal be used in the same way to add a little grit when required? Would really appreciate some help here, Cheers, Dave.
 9.
Last bump before I'm putting it on ebay tomorrow
Ampeg svt 4 pro for trade?
 10.
How much for the SVT 4? Dan
£650 mate, its showroom condition all through. Cheers, Dave.
 11. Hi there, most of what i'm looking for is in the title! My USA made Ampeg SVT 4 is an awesome amp. It is in mint condition, uber reliable, great tone and flightcased. I'll consider trades for good condition amps and will make up the money to market value. I'm in the Cardiff area and have transport. I want to go all tube because a tribute band I've joined requires it and the other members are all nagging me! What you'll get from the deal:An awesome amp which weighs half of an all tube amp (no hernias or chiropractors!), new features like compression, mono bridge or stereo outputs, crossover and much more tonal flexibility. Plus some hard cash!! Thanks for reading and cheers, Dave.
