1.
Dave - was your main point supposed to be "once you find your sound, stick with it, don't mess about trying other gear because it's lighter/more reliable because it'll never reproduce your sound"? Or was it literally "all amps are sh*t except ampegs"? Either way, a most enjoyable thread.
It was once you've found your sound, stick with it yes. The grass isn't always greener etc.. I stated why I sold my original SVT head, too heavy! To me though, it's worth the weight.
 2. Anyone who knows their onions will have heard a Precision through an SVT 2 and 8x10 cabinet. That's what it sounds like, the real deal!
 3.
So come on then Dave, let's have the chance to hear your awesome sound then and make up our own minds? You play to crowds of 10,000 there'll be some evidence of your existence somewhere, point us towards it please? C
Obviously not mate. Why would I want to take you to my band's website so you can go and write what a prat I am on there? If I was going to lie, I'd have said 80,000 wouldn't I!
 4.
I read the OP as a harmless bit of fishing of the sort I used to do all the time on football boards. If I had roadies and stuff I'd be standing in front of a row of big black fridges for sure.
An example of the good practice I refer to.
 5. Thanks all. As I said, it started as a bit of genuine advice but you've all quite rightly got your knives out and everyone's joined the party. At least I've made some people laugh.... I hope. I was never aiming to be a 'troll' cos they're supposed to write things to just wind people up. My thread never started as that, I genuinley mean what I wrote. Anyway, all of you enjoy what amps you play through and I'll enjoy mine. The only thing that has been a bit sad is the mob culture many have adopted. There are people who've admitted that they can't afford a valve amp, have tried one and prefer SS, or don't want to carry one, which is great, but what annoys me are the people who've probably never played through a valve amp, own a budget amp and have still told me i'm full of sh*t because it's been the fashionable thing to do! Cheers all.... the 'troll' x
 6.
You know when you 'rest your case' you are supposed to stop saying stuff right?
Yep, and leave all you with your 2kg baby amps that you can carry in your man handbag on the way to your next open mic session at the Flying Horse!
 7.
I think Muzz was having a bit of a chuckle at this point. Hardly claiming you were talking sh*te.
It's hard to know what he's on about. Adult literacy might be an option for him!
 8.
Err care to explain how you can rest your case at that point?
Cos (like me) you all think you know best. At least I can admit it!
 9.
Oh right, so I see, well, feel free to follow the link to my myspace page, and with your heightened awareness and golden ears listen to the first track "What It Is", and tell me what the recording chain was, did I use a valve pre, head, mic a cab or not, what cab and mic was it? Can I play or not? What post processing was involved to get the timbres you hear? Was it recorded to tape, or digital? Then post me a link to your band website, and I'll critique your work too. What fun!! Rest assured there are some very very pro players on this site, some semi-pro players, some hobbyists (some are as good as the pros) and some people learning and trying to get better. We have a real community oif bass loving types of all standards, with equiptment ranging from starters to the very very highest of high end imaginable. Some of the latter dont have a valve in their signal path, some do. They all sound the absolute canine undercarriage to me though. What would I know though...
Yawn!!
 10.
I'm gonna tell you right now: An SVT is sh*t. There is a 69/70 SVT sat within 20 feet of me right now and it sound can be described as non existent. It is crude, badly constructed and quite clearly has been beat, to death, by a previous owner. I've had a look inside, and the construction and components are not of noteable quality, and when it is eventually returned to a working state, at a cost of most likely more than most of my rig (minus the cab, expensive toy), it will sound like an Ampeg SVT, not whatever you plug into it, which is not great if you actually want to do things like amplify the sound from the rest of your signal path. Also of note is that as far as I know, this one is an all valve head, unlike the SVT2 which has a whole bunch of solid state components. All valve stuff can sound great, but stuff that is not all valve, such as your 'great sounding' amp can sound great whilst being a hybrid. Paid by people who buy new Ampegs. I'd rather spend the money on a nice amp for me, although I'd cheerfully lend to Geezer or Tim.
I rest my case!
 11.
I think it was about here that you lost your audience... That tends to ruffle feathers, especially since an awful lot of us on here are pro/semi-pro and been doing so for years. We also don't know what standard you are, you could be a spoiled 16 year old gobsh*te with an amp from mummy, you could be an overpaid banker who HAD to have the right rig, or you could be an honest to goodness bassist with an opinion and no way of putting it tactfully. Take your pick (or enlighten us)
Of course I could be but i'm not. And, as I said, putting my band's website on here would not be a good idea would it. My posts you refer to were retaliation for the barrage of posts I recieved telling me I was talking sh*te.
 12.
More trolling rubbish! You arent comapring like for like hear for a start. Secondly a decent PA is all about FOH sound, the engineer could care less for a big rigf then - the spill from big cabs is very detrimental. A small miced guitar cab (say a 6 to 15 watt single 12" coned combo) is plenty for a aguitarist to hear himslef, and will break up beautifully, mic it and let the sound guy put that to FOH and monitors. Similarly with bass, a 112 at the right height is enough of a monitor if you are doing the big PA thing. Mic'ed or DI'ed is fine, what a sound guy doesnt want is a stupid great 810 getting in the way and spewing out hideous amounts of rumble into the kick mic, snare mic, etc etc etc. You aint done any FOH have you? Good quality amps that deliver just enough volume to satisfy the players and do a slittle else beyond that as possible are the answer to every decent sound engineers dream. This applies up to 40K rigs (thats the biggest rig I have ever personally run). Furthermore, as previously stated even bassists struggle to determine the difference in tone from an Ampeg B1 and an MB LMII, punters dont even know there is a bassist on the stage!
So why don't all bands use stuff they can get in the back of a car and save on transport and road crew costs?
 13.
+1 count me in
The issue is, there's no real standard on here is there. I could be having a debate with people who are pro musicians or people who can barely play the bass or have a sh*t sound anyway. Who knows? My original post was intended for anyone who has a big heavy valve amp and is thinking of selling it for something more portable. I regretted it big time and think they would too. My last crowd was 10,000 and I need a big rig, and love the tone it gives me. I searched every other make and model and couldn't find anything that came close. That's all.... was just a bit of advice, didn't realise it'd ruffle so many feathers!
 14.
so yeah, i'd love to have a nice big tube amp head. not an svt2-pro i'd rather have either a marshall vba400 or a matamp... but i just don't have a. the money or b. the room for them. Ar you prejudiced against those less fortunate? nazi? Anyway for a working musician, having a more lightweight setup pays. Theres no point in me carting a fridge and 3 ton amp into every small pub and club that i play when half the power and speakers would suffice. Anyway i feel that my v-type preamp gets pretty close to the tone i have in my head, it may not be perfect, but its only me who will ever notice.
I disagree sir. Everyone notices. Many won't care as you obviously don't, but they'll notice. I saw a local band who all used little combo amps, the bass player had a one speaker amp, and they sounded really bad. The PA engineer described his job as, 'trying to polish a turd'!
 15.
your replies are a bit selective dave... You still haven't told us where you gig so we can all hear you play with this 'super tone'
Oh, I know. I'll give you my band's website so you can all insult me on that shall I?
 16.
Nice, but not Janek really.... When is school back? Next week?
Apparently so. You'd better iron your uniform Chuck!
 17.
SVT2: solid state rectifier, ruins the tone.
Oh come on. Some of you obviously don't agree with me and I perfectly accept that. I can also see exactly what many of you are saying. Very sensible and worthwhile. But this guy is just talking sh*te man! Nobody on here can tell me that an SVT is sh*t. Some may prefer other tones etc but come on!
 18. Here you are boys: http://line6.com/lowdownld15/ The bass player of Lemal swears by them apparently!
 19.
We're replying to your silly posts because of your rudeness and general bad attitude, not sneering at your gear. Why can't you see that?
I'm not being rude, just honest. I'm the one being called a prat and all sorts of other things just for telling the truth!
 20.
Randy Jackson from American Idol. Grow up!
What about Mike Inez, Geezer Butler, Tim Commerford and Jason Newstead?
 21.
Oh come on now you do come across as a prat! Randy Jackson, Richard Bona, Rocco Prestia, Esperanza Spalding!!!! Go back to playing guitar...
Randy Jackson from American Idol. Grow up!
 22.
HAHHAHHAHAHAAAAA!!! You sooo funny G.I.! Personal opinion here, but I absolutely hate the SVT 'tone'. I feel better for saying that already. When you crank them they dont do a very good job of clean, the cab (that big ole 810 crapola coffin) is only good for lofi bass sounds, and it weighs as much as a car. You dont happen to say what cabs you are using though, and that is as much to do with your tone (in some case a lot more) than the amp. Please enlighten me grasshopper, your nonsense is highly entertaining, no really carry on, please....
OK. I have the USA SVT 2 pro, an Ampeg classic 8x10 cab, Musicman Stingray and USA Fender Precision. A load of sh*t to be sneered at obviously!
 23.
http://www.tcelectronic.com/bass_artists.asp That's a fairly powerful list of endorsee's for a pretty new 'little amp'.
Hardly any heavyweights of the bass world are there?
 24. As predicted, a stream of bass players with middle of the road amps trying to justify why the have them. Look at what the pro's use guys and ask yourself why? Don't see many of these 'little' bass amps on TV do ya!
