Always typically late to the party but i got a mid 80's BB1100 at the weekend in a part trade. This is my first venture into the world of vintage BB1100's and am really impressed so far, weight's not too bad either at 8.5lbs - i was expecting it to weigh more for some reason. Took it do a 'Dad rock' rehearsal yesterday and it played really well, more so on the P pickup in passive, cut through really nicely - think this may make a great work horse until i get bored.
A few Q's - i'm assuming it's a Taiwan model but how do you tell if it's Jap or Taiwan? i can't see any serial numbers externally, Also mine has a schaller 3d bridge and tuners - assuming these must be upgrades? although can't see any extra holes and they do look quite old - functions great. Looks a like a BT1 Hipshop d-tuner as the tuners do look very similar to that of past MM Stingrays that i've owned - anyone ever fitted a D-tuner to theirs? .
As a general rule of thumb, if the top horn is below the 12th fret its Japanese, if the horn is upto the 12th fret its made in Taiwan. Yours looks Taiwanese to me, but info on the reverse of headstock should give more details.

My first proper proper bass when I was 13 (1995!) was a Samick P Bass with that exact headstock, I only got rid of it last year - they’re really very nice necks, pretty slim for a P (or mine was) but that’s how I prefer them anyway. If this is still kicking about in a couple of weeks I might well have this!
Yes I agree, the neck is slimmer than a standard P.

I’ve just got one from the local Cash Generator for £59.99. Can’t wait to pick it up tomorrow! 😁
Put some flats on it. The frets on these are soft and wear very easily! And as it's from CG, some antibacterial wipes won't hurt 😂

Westone Thunders are hugely underrated. I had a mint Thunder 1A, fantastic bass, one I miss selling. I think the "Hard Puncher" name for the pups are a referrence to the Tokai Hard Puncher - same pup. Sound great.

Thanks for that. Would you know how the EMG compares to something like the Dimarzio DP122BK?Yes, the emg has more output, and more vintage tone than the Dimarzio. Both are similar in the mids department.

If you don't like aggressive P than the gzr probably isn't for you. The gzr is like a CS 62 on steroids.
The QP and Thumper are two different sounding pups, the QP is modern, whereas the thumper is more hot vintage.
If you like low mids, and like the CS 62, than the Vintage 63 would be the one. 63 has more low mids than the 62.

I believe these were g plan specials. Bodies and neck made by g plan back in the day.

Roll off the tone knob and some sponge under the rounds. Costs virtually nothing. Also hand muting with tone rolled down with also give the same sound.

The cheapest Duncan , SCPB-1 , has just 1 hole and the raised pole for A. Same for Bloodstone Guitar Works, Dave's 51-54 Precision/Tele is a 1 hole bobbin, staggered poles being optional.

Thank you I think this is the one.
It's not. If you look your pup has one hole in the top. The retrovibe has 3!

That's because they are the same strings. Rotos have no silk at ball end. TIs silks at headstock start closer to the A tuner than the E. Olympia have very uneven silks at headstock (uneven heights), don't line up like more expensive flats.
The only other red silk flats are Harley benton ones, but they have coloured ball end.

Players in The Smiths and Elastica also played Squiers.

I’d suggest the Squier Classic Vibe 50s Precision from your description above.
Except for the chunky neck, these squiers don't have chunky necks.
Harley benton pb50 do have proper 50s chunky necks and are dirt cheap, but very good.

Because the 12th is the center point between nut and bridge, changes at either end will affect the action and height of the strings.

That sounds good to me, on the description on the webpage it says "twin tone pot" is this bass and treble?
No idea. Generally active basses have treble and bass boost. Jazz pups are inherently brighter sounding, so you shouldn't have any issue dialing in a bright tone.

Harley Benton JJ-45OP https://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_jj_45op_white.htm
This.
You want a bright sound: maple board, Ash body, active j pups with treble boost, slap on some light SS strings, and play with a lightish pick near the bridge and you won't get a brighter tone!

At the 12th fret
You may well be confusing the OP who is talking about measurement from the last fret (20th), no idea why they're talking last fret. So for the OP measurements are generally taken from 12th fret, not the last fret.

all mine are about 1.5mm with a couple just under 2mm
All your basses are 1.5mm at the last fret? You must like fret buzz, or have an exceptional light touch.

Simple, either of these.
