1. Hi 4STRINGER, Great Bass, good to meet and do business. Hope you didn't have to pull that emengency stop chord ??? . . . . Seriously, what a wonderful bass the Geddy Lee is and in such fantastic condition. I count myself very lucky that I wasn't beaten to it by a fellow basschat'er ! Rock on, Cheers and thanks,
2. Thanks for that, I think if thats the case then the BDI would probably be the one for me as I can get all the fattness and big sound I want out of my various valve heads and my SWR500. Not suggesting my SWR sounds like a B15 . . . . but I think Rumble Heads are close to the SVT sound ? Shame I can't get an online supplier to send me both rack units so I can try them out and then keep one and return the other ! . . . wouldn't that be an amazing online service !! Cheers,
3. I've got a polytune 2 tuner and I find mine will track almost any bass tuning situation providing I pluck the string at the octive so to speak. Doesn't matter whether by finger or pick. I guess that could be because maybe there's less harmonic content in the signal being tracked - that is, if you've plucked the string exactly half way along its length ? anyway, I'm no expert, but thats just what I've always noticed over the years with different tuners - I've always got best tuning tracking when plucking the strings in that way ? Cheers
4. Hi, I've been borrowing a very old SansAmp Bass DI pedal from a friend for the last 6 months or so, have had very good results from it fine tuning tone to suit gigs and DI'ing out to PA's and I'm now quite sorry to see it go back to its original owner. So, I've been looking on the Tech 21/SansAmp web site to get up to date info, where I noticed they do 19" 1U rack units. Which would suit me as I have a 1U space in my amp rack. The web site seems to have two potential units that are similar to the floor pedal, one is the SansAmp RBI rack unit and the other is the Tech 21 VT Bass rack, pictures below:- SansAmp RBI rack unit Tech 21 VT Bass rack It seems that SansAmp and Tech 21 are in fact one and the same company, and I've spent a while comparing the specs for these two units on their website, but must confess I don't seem to be able to grasp what, if anything, is the fundamental difference between these two units ? . . . whilst I'm thinking that surely these days no manufacturer could afford to market two competing units that do the same range of things ? Any advice on the differences would be very very much appreciated ?

7. Here are some pics of the chassis:-- Would be interested to know to what extent its original ? . . . General concensus is that the valves are wrong . . but would be nice to know if the transformers were original and how much of the wiring and other components are original ? The two transformers have got "Douglas Electronics LTD" Louth, England labels on them and there's an initialed Test/Assembly sticker on the chassis which I think reads either 5th April 1971 or possibly 1977 ? . . . but I think its 1971. And I think the chassis serial number is 712. Thanks,
8. Mr Foxen, Big thanks for nailing the make of the amp for me . . . . must say I never ever heard of White ? . . . . but its got the 45 degree angled cabinetry detail front that we would all associate with orange/matamp designs . . . so I gues it may be one from that stable ? I've got it at home now and could take it apart and post some pictures of the internals . . . . if anyones interested to see the insides of it that is ? Give me a should if of any interest ? Cheers and thanks for sharing your expertise
9. Thanks for the input but must confess I'm still pretty uncertain at the moment ? I've surfed some Vintage Roost pages but cant find any example with a similar control plate (ie, black chicken style knobs on a dark plate with white, almost arial font, lettering and horizontal line graphics like on this amp) The Roost Amps I've looked at, and there are clearly a fair number of different models, all have boxed line graphics, rather than just horizontal lines like this amp ? . . and generally have round rather than ckicken knobs, though I know knobs can be easily changed and don't count for much ? As for the "tour range" lettering on the right of the control plate, I think thats just the model or series, rather than the actual make - I'm sure the "make" would have been on the plate thats now sadly missing ? The only White Amplifiers I can find on line are White Acoustics Tour Range . . they are modern high tech PA amps and not remotely like this old valve amp. Cant find any on line reference to a vintage amp named a "White" ? One thing I do know, is, that its believed this particular amp hasn't been messed about with much, so the valve compliment and the chicken knobs are highly likely to be original. Big thanks for the replies and suggestions so far . . any further suggestions very very welcome. I'm doing daft things like googling "vintage Guitar Amp" and trawling through every single photo I can find in the hope of spotting this style of control plate design . . . . have to say the closest are Hiwatts . . except for the "tour Range" lettering which does look very very Orange like ? . . . . Ah well . . still a complete mistery ? ? ? Thanks,
10. Here are a couple of slightly higher res zooms of the front controls plate - The script on the right of the controls plate looks almost Orange like in terms of font style . . . also the cabinetry does appear to have that sort of angled bevel on the front face that Orange and Matamp heads have ?. . . but . . . I've searched the Orange and Matamp archives and I can't find anything that looks remotely like it ?
11. Hi Everyone, Need some help identifying the make / model / age of this vintage looking amp ? Its a possible restoration project once I've worked out what it is ? As you can see from the photos below there's a model logo on the right of the controls panel, its also got a bass boost knob making me think it may be a bass amp . . . . but thats just a guess ? . . It also looks like there used to be a substantial name plate on the front and you can see 4 screw holes where it would have been . . but not there now unfortunately ? Its got two hefty transformers in it and four 6550 power valves . . . again making me think its might be a bass amp ? Any help identifying it's Make / Model and possible age would be very much appreciated ? . . . . . pictures below:-
12. Hi, Does anyone know if Pen-Elcom type H1024 handles (as fitted to some Fender Bass & Guitar cabs) in BROWN are available to buy anywhere ? I've got a Custom Shop 4 x 10" Rumble Bass Cab from the 90's and need a new handle . . . cant find one anywhere ? This same handle seems to be currently available in black and is used on Dynacord PA cabs . . . . but I'm looking for the BROWN version as originally fitted to my Fender cab - just trying to keep the old cab original ? Any advice on locating one very much appreciated ? Cheers,
13. Hi there, Does anyone have a Brown Penn-Elcom Type H1024 Fender cab handle in their spare parts store ? ? ?
14. Does anyone know if fender have a "spare parts" contact number or point of contact ?. . . . maybe Fender hold spares for their products - most firms do ? . . . Someone somewhere must have a Brown Penn-Elcom Type H1024 Fender cab handle in their spare parts store ? ? ? Thanks,
15. Hi Bertbass, Many thanks mate . . . you are spot on . . . it seems the handles I've got on this old Fender Cab are Penn-Elcom Type H1024. As you've spotted and mentioned, all the ones on line seem to be Black . . . . Does anyone know if these are available anywhere in Brown . . . Cheers
16. Hi, Am wondering if anyone can help me with this frustrating "spare part supply" problem. I've got an original Fender Custom Shop Rumble Bass cab from the 1990's in very good condition except that one of the carry handles is missing. I've been searching everywhere on line to try and order a replacement handle but frustratingly have not been able to get a part number for the handle I need (there is nothing printed on the other handle at all) or been able to identify who makes them ? Through my research I have found that fender used these handles quite a lot in their Custom Shop Cab range in the 90's. Also, Dynacord currently use exactly the same size/design of handle (presumably supplied by the same manufacturer as fender must have used) except that the current dynacord handles are black where as the Fender ones were Brown. Obviously I'd like to source a brown one to keen my cab original. I've added a few pictures to highlight the predicament and any advice as to who makes and might supply these handles and where I could order the handle I need would be very very much appreciated. Must confess I've almost driven myself mad searching for this handle and am about to give up - which will be a great shame as its a lovely cab in fabulous condition for its age and must be quite rare. So, here is the cab (you can see the missing handle recess) :- Here is the other handle - so its one of these I'm trying to find :- Interestingly I have identified that Dynacord use the same type of handles, except theirs are black with their logo on them, here is a photo of a current Dynacord speaker with the same design handle Any help very very very much appreciated ! ! !
17. Thanks for that, Yea, am using a Rane active crossover which allows me to select the crossover slope I want, and yes, the tops are powered by a seperate power amp. So I can tune the crossover point and vary the gain of the signal sent to the tops or subs . . . . as well as, of course, trim the master vols on the Crown CE2000 amps that I have to drive the sub bins. In theory I could put 2000w into each cab, but havent often needed to run them flat out - except at a couple of outside events I did last summer. Cheers,
18. Budget ? . . . . well the less spent the better . . . . . could got to £800 or maybe even £1K max but wouldn't do that unless I was convinced I was getting a lot "extra" ? . . for the money ? . . . £600 would be a comfortable and more sencible target price . . . Have been thinking more about this "4" verses "2" cab issue - and am seriously wondering how 4 of the cheaper Alto's would perform when linked up and directly compared to, say, 2 Yorkvilles or equivalent leading brands ?. . . all other things being equal that is ? . . . .
19. Great Amp . . . I had one until I got the Rumble Head. Have another free bump
20. Happy New Year all, Not quite sure where this topic ought to go - but thought I’d post it here ? As well as play bass, I also look after the band PA and desk at our gigs, and, need to buy some bass bins to compliment the full range PA speakers we use. We’ve been borrowing some bass bins over the last year or so (one Yorkville LS808 and one OHM LM-S to be precise) and each has been driven by a Crown CE2000 that we already have. Availability of these bins has now gone - so need to buy our own. Having surveyed the market I’ve discovered that either of the PA subs we’ve been using would be pretty expensive to buy – probably over a grand for either pair – so was wondering quite how the VFM and law of ever diminishing returns applied to PA bass cabs ? . . I’ve googled a bit and found a make called ALTO on the net, their SX range of 15” & 18” subs are about half the price of the market leaders – wondered if any of you bass players out there had any views on good VFM bins and how much it's necessary to spend . . after all it's mostly Bass reinforcement and Kick Drums down in this frequency range. To my ear, the ones we’ve been using sounded fairly similar, the Yorkville was a bit more efficient so didn’t need quite so much amp gain to balance the OHM LM-S, and it’s the fact that they both sounded similar had me wondering whether there’s actually that much difference other than power handling obviously ? . . Bottom line is, you could buy 4 Alto’s for the price of Two Yorkvilles . . and I wonder which would sound the best if one A/B’d that four verses two alternative ? . . So . . several questions here I guess . . . . and what with Bass Bins not being exactly easy to audition or compare in a live meaningfull way . . any thoughts much appreciated . . if we bass players cant tell the difference then who’s going to ? cheers
21. Hi there, Good question . . . . you'll see that I've posted on this subject in the past . . . . . There is something about bad ass bridges that I really like . . . soon as I pick up a bass with a bad ass fitted I just feel familiar and comfortable with it. I guess historically Leo Quan was one of the first to market high mass bridge upgrades . . . . . but right from years ago there has always been much dispute about the audible benefits . . . . it seems logical that a higher mass bridge is going to be siugnificant . . but is it ? . . I always think I can hear the difference . . . but I know people who reckon it’s a waste of money . . . and that they don’t provide anything that you cant achieve by tweeking the EQ on your amp ? ? ? . . . . my argument to that is that I’m sure that a higher mass bridge must change or influence the way the whole body of the bass resonates in response to your playing . . which in turn must affect the tone / sound from your bass . . . how subtle or noticeable that is, is, I guess, the million dollar question ? Bottom line . . . I like the look and feel of them . . . so I use them . . . . and feel happy with that ? . . . and I “think” they improve the tone of my bass . . . I think ? As for vfm compared to the Gotoh 201 . . well . . like I said I like the look of the Leo Quan . . so I guess I'm happy to pay for it ?
22.
What about this one? http://www.themicsto...nd-07-325m.html
Yea . . . thanks for that . . . . SE are a good firm . . . . but that stand is definitely a specialist studio job . . . that’s what SE are about after all . . . it's probably very versatile ergonomically . . . but probably not designed to be kicked around a club or a pub whilst setting up for the evening ! ! . . . my lot treat my PA gear dreadfully . . . . dump all the mic stands on the floor and then probably dump a PA cab on top of them so as to get through with their beloved backline amps etc . . . so I guess its "toughness" that I’m looking for first and foremost ? The Studio Spares Mic Stands I've been using have been ok for what I paid for them . . . but they've taken some punishment over several years and due the abuse they get from my other band members who don’t take care of any of the PA stuff really . . . well . . . I do need "tougher" stands . . . or a new band ! . . ha ! Cheers . . .
23. really like that . . . must find out about the head !
24. Were Reslo stands the old chrome ones with the cast tripod feet ? . . . I seem to remember them from a long time ago ? ? Thanks for your thoughts but I'm hoping that somewhere out there in internet land, or better still from a local shop, I'd be able to order a couple of really well made reliable mic stands !
25. No problem, Seems to me Mic Stands are a real hit and miss affair with regard to how well they are made, vfm etc, so hoping for some feedback from any members who can recommend any particular models as particularly good value. Just spotted the Ultimate Support Tour-TT stand whilst looking on google . . . . anyone used these ? . . . bit above my £50 price point but again are they worth the extra in terms of build quality and ease of use ? . . any one used them ? Cheers
