I've been getting impulsive urges towards the Quad Cortex recently. What's the community like around it? What sort of setups are people using? I'd probably pair it with the SLO, Cali76 and a couple of drives (unless I could get a decent capture) for a Hybrid setup. Are you curious if you're using it for pretty straightforward tones or if anyone has been using it for more experimental stuff? I've previously had the MOD Dwarf and the GT1000core, the QC seems to take some of my favourite features with the captures and routing flexibility. It looks to lack some of the lower-level stuff that those two could do like assigning parameters to input levels, the Dwarf even let you do some crazy stuff with CV emulation so you could have random value generators bound to controls allowing for some fascinating stuff. Can the Quad Cortex do any slow ramping between values? I guess like the HX One "Flux" functionality.

Well this is where we settled for now: Will hopefully switch bits around once I grab a Cali76, will ditch the Ditto and squish it in at the top. This gives me a few options, from the SLO I have the DI along with the output and thru wired up to the patch bay, I also have the power amp/DI signal from the Mother making it super easy to use this for guitar however I need.

I love the way they've separated the Bluetooth app connection from the audio. It means you can connect the app to your phone and edit patches while playing audio from another source like a laptop. Seems to be the cause of most people’s issues getting it set up though.
-
Have you connected both the Midi and Audio Bluetooth connections?

WIP reshuffle, cannae decide what to include and where. Part of me is tempted to grab a RB 2.2 or something and having just the Canvas tuner > HX One > Dagger > Model Fet > SLO and keep it a little more compact. Then keep the Science Mother, Halberd and perhaps the MOD Dwarf on a second small board. Its all very stressful!

Ace, will try and take a closer look later! Cheers for the help folks, will update if i find anything!

I couldn’t see any dry joints but I’ll take another look! Cheers!

Had a Radial ProDI for a while, mostly sat on a shelf since I got my Capo. Long story short, the pass through is fine but the XLR is completely dead. Not sure if it’s taken a bump or something but can’t see any obvious signs of damage, all looks fine inside. Any thoughts? Is it worth trying to get it fixed or should I just grab another?

Anyone packing a DI under their board? I just grabbed the SLO which has replaced my Capo for now but I’m really missing the pre DI for recording a dry version. I think having that dry/clean DI available is the last blocker really for me making the call on which to keep. I currently have a Rockboard 3.0 so there’s a reasonable amount of clearance.

Yeah it’s a tricky one, I’ve heard good ones which use an input key or loop so the behaviour is based on the actual input from the bass rather than effected signal. It’s just finding a balance that doesn’t sound unnatural.
-
The beauty of the GT1000core was being able to use assignments to bind the threshold with input level and really fine tune the roll off. Meant you could get a really subtle effect. I suspect I’ve been spoiled by the CORE.

Ace! Yeah keep me posted 🙌 I love a bit of filth, I don’t mind a little noise but it can rack up quick, especially when you start stacking drives.
-
Hey! Wondered what noise gates people are using (if any) on their pedalboards. I used to have the GT1000core which had an excellent noise gate option. Since getting rid I’ve been dealing without, usually not an issue but once you get to high gain territory I certainly miss it. Any recommendations? Are there any low profile options that could sit under the board? I've heard good stuff about the Fortin Zuul but seems a little overkill for me!

I never advocated buying 8 Harley Bentons, for me there’s a happy middle ground which is too mid ranged basses that get the most value (for me). I mean the Gucci and Porsche suggestion was in jest but no more ridiculous than a plumber purchasing gear from poundland. As I said, I personally don’t think I’d hear or feel any difference between my mid range and higher end bass in a live context so for me spending more is a waste. My higher spec boutique bass gets way less play than my 2 Schecters so for me personally I’ve found my sweet spot.

I wouldn’t sink loads of money into something I knew I was going to beat the hell out of. First gig with my Schecter and the guitar launched his guitar into it and made a big dent, had it been a £2500 bass I’d have been gutted. I also don’t think I would have noticed any difference in that context between a well setup £500-600 instrument vs a high end one. I wouldn't buy a Porsche to do school/shopping runs, I would however want something reliable and cost effective to run. If I was a plumber I wouldn’t be rocking my diamond emblazoned gucci overalls to work 🤷♂️

I'd rather have a more low/mid-spec bass and treat it to some upgrades and a proper setup over a stock high-end bass and have a little left over. I've played quite a few basses and my Schecter J4 is honestly just as fun to play as any of the more expensive ones but cost me around £550ish. The lower/middle range of instruments is so good now, that returns on the higher end have never been so diminished. I think the only way I'd go for something more expensive is if it was custom-built like an Alpher Instruments bass or something.

I accidentally forgot to cancel a free trial to Ultimate Guitar so I'm currently working my way through the top bass tabs. Some stuff in there I've never learned but should have, some stuff I learned and forgot, and the occasional one I had to skip over. A few RHCP ones I'd forgotten just how fun they are to play cropped up too like Californiacation etc. I've gotten really weak at playing with fingers over the last couple of years so it's been a great little workout.

They’re all so pretty 😍 I’m very interested to see which make the cut and which go on sale, I’ll be waiting patiently for sloppy seconds.

MOD Device (Dwarf/Duo/Duo X) owners' club - Tips, Ideas & Patches

Yeah I did the CV thing with an expression pedal connected via midi. Had it so the EXP controlled ranges of random CV oscillators which controlled some delays to give a kind of funky warbling sound which got more extreme and chaotic as you used the pedal. The CV stuff is incredibly cool, takes a little getting your head around. -
I think you can save over the presets to my knowledge. I think the desktop app lets you back up and reorder patches although I don't think you can edit them via the software which is a pain. You can also make it so only a selection of patches appear on the device, say you just had 4 effects you jumped between, you could lock it down.

Aye that’ll work, just make sure you do a little experimentation as it will introduce a bit of extra latency. Thats one of the reasons I stopped using the 2nd channel as an fx loop, especially with Portals it essentially doubles latency. If no Portal is required though it should be manageable as long as iRig isn’t adding too much. -
A very reluctant sale, these don’t come up for sale much. The obelisk of doom that is the 0xEAE Fuzz. Capable of surprising pleasant overdrive tones at low gain right up to snarling octave fuzz with all kinds of crazy harmonics. It sounds amazing and looks like nothing else. I’m having to make some tough calls on what I keep and I just don’t use fuzz enough justify keeping it 😭
