For me, it has to be Chris Squire. He is one of the reasons I became a bass player. He was never afraid to bunk tradition and use all the fretboard and play his bass like a lead guitar. His tone was very bright, even when playing lower register notes. Sadly missed but never forgotten.

I need some advice please guys. I play in a church band, and I've always used my own backline (currently an Ashdown head and cab) which is DI'd to the church multicore, and then I get a mix of myself and everyone else fed back from the house PA to a wedge monitor on the floor in front of me. So technically, I've got two foldbacks, my amp behind me and the wedge in front of me. Recently in my absence, someone tried to use my amp as an extra foldback (not quite sure how) but they popped my amp and it cost £100 to repair. As a consequence, the church are now telling me to keep my amp at home and they want to buy their own. What I need advice on, is should I advise replicating what I currently use, or might it be better to kill two birds and use something like a Hartke Kickback combo instead? I definitely don't want to go direct to DI as it sounds horrid, and I want a degree of control over my tone at least, if not volume as well. Sorry for the long-winded post but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I realise I'm quite late to this party so my input may be academic now, but for those of us who play 5 or 6 string basses, I'm interested to know how much if any of the low end is lost?

I was quite keen on the Dr Green Aspirin and the Bass Squeeze until I read Ovnilabs reviews of them! I'll look into the suggestions above but they seem to be out of my price range..... Any love for any of the ones I mentioned above or around that price range?

I play bass and either acoustic guitar or 6 string electric via an A/B switch through my pedal board into my bass amp, and I'm thinking of getting a compressor pedal to even out my sound. I play 5 and 6 string basses, so I don't want to lose the lows too much. Can anyone recommend a relatively cheap pedal that would work for this application? Am I better with a bass compressor over a guitar one? Looked at Digitech Bass Squeeze, Marshall ED-1, Dr Green Aspirin, EHX Soul Preacher reviews online but not actually tried any out, so just wondering if any of my BC brothers and sisters have had a similar dilemma?

Well guys thanks for all your comments and help. I stumbled across a music shop which is having a clear out and managed to bag the Rumble 15 for a silly price so couldn't resist! It may not be the cream of the crop compared to some of the above suggestions, but it will suffice for solo home practice so I'm happy. I had a play with one in a local shop on Monday and it sounded pretty good for it's size, so thanks a lot everyone. I did actually buy a Peavey KB/A60 as thought this would be suitable for guitar and bass but it's way too big and loud for home practice so if anyones interested I'm selling it! :-)

Lot of love on here for the Fender so will probably go for that - does no one have anything to say about the Laney or Eden? I'm surprised about the Laney at least....

Isn't that a bit TOO small? I'm not sure it would cope with my 6 string bass 😊

Thanks, it's too far away I'm afraid, and it's physically a big bigger than I want. Also, I used to love TE stuff until I bought a brand new AH300SM head which quite literally set on fire in the middle of a gig! Fortunately I'd managed to get a lifetime warranty on it so got it repaired but never quite trusted it after that and switched to Ashdown.

I'm looking for a little amp to practice alone at home and I'm considering these:- Fender Rumble 15 Laney RB1 Eden EM15 All reputable makes but not sure which is best. Has anyone got any experience of these to help me decide? I also want to be able to use my electric guitar with it for practice too (not at the same time though!) Thanks all you lovely bass people!

[/quote] As I said in my original post, I did buy a headless bass (and still have it) so it would fit in the car I had at the time. I actually love the 159, but it's a bit big for my mrs and there's also the matter of £180 tax compared with the giulietta's £30..... Behind the seats is ok as long as I don't have to leave it parked anywhere as I don't want my bass on view, hence the question about the boot.

I'm talking shaped case not rectangular, surely a shaped case would fit in the 159 even at an angle? I currently have a focus estate and it fits in there at a slight angle. I want a more "interesting" car though, hence the Alfa, although the focus has been the best car I've ever had...

Bit of a long shot, this, but are there any bass players out there who own an Alfa Romeo Giulietta, and if so, is it possible to get a bass in a shaped case in the boot without folding the seats down? (I once had a Fiat Uno and actually bought a headless bass so it would fit in the boot!) Alternatively, are there any Kia C'eed hatchback owners out there that can fit one in? Thanks! Does the action look high to you, and shouldn't the saddles be in a nice diagonal line?

I'm assuming it's normal to have some curvature of the neck (relief) though?
