Wow! Yep I find myself missing a punchy jazz tone - didn't want to do active electronics though, and youtube makes the passive Sires sound very authoritative, but what do I know, I know that can be deceiving - worth a try though...!

Also heard that the weights were more of an issue of the gen 1, the v2 seeeeem to have remedied that a bit more and stay around 4kg - hopefully that's the case, long as it's not a boat anchor...!

    Ander.

My brothers Sire was a gen 1. If they get the weight right well that's a home run. With basses of this quality available for so little money, I for one would be very happy to have it as my go to. Over the years I have spent a fair bit of time putting boutique and vintage basses through my hands. I am retired from playing for a while, but if I was ever to go back playing, I would get a Sire and leave it at that.

  2. I have owned countless Fenders, a Jaydee, Sadowsky NYC, WAL and a few other basses over many years. Right now I am setting up a pair of the cheaper end Sire basses ( a fretless and a fretted ) for my brother and am blown away by the quality. The fretless coated neck at this price point is stunning. The only downside for me is the weight. Other than that these are excellent pro level giggle basses. If I were to go back playing, I would have no interest in boutique basses.

  3. I have my CD collection and that of a few friends ripped onto an Innuos Zen server. I can also stream Tidal with this unit. I download and pay for albums from a number of legitimate sites and load them onto the Zen, including hi res. I can operate the unit using an app on my phone and have no desire going back to CD.

I also have a vinyl collection which I enjoy.

Not sure who bought them but @Jabba_the_gut's creations are amazing. See if you can borrow one of them (check the build diaries thread if you haven't seen them)

I have seen his creations,  was in touch with him several months ago  but did not go ahead with a build then. I have just now pm'd him with an enquiry. Beautiful looking basses. I live in Ireland, so borrowing one won't happen unfortunately.

  5. Its been several years since I had a bass in my hands, but I am now on the lookout for an acoustic/ semi hollow fretless, as a mate of mine is recording an album and wants me to contribute. I am thinking of a medium scale instrument with pick up. Not so keen on the super shortscale offerings from Goldtone and ukulele type basses (though I am open to persuasion). Budget is anything up to £800.

Rumour has it that Trujillo bought it but refused to give it to the family, instead opting to keep it in his private collection whilst allowing the family access to it. Don't know if that's true, just a rumour I heard somewhere and I don't remember seeing Felix etc with it... Anyone have more info?

Just as it says in the article that was posted, Trujillo owns it, but is willing to sell it back to the Pastorius' at any time for the same price he paid for it.

    He obviously needs the dosh

    Mine is 9.4 pounds.

A nice weight. I retired from playing a number of years ago. Indeed I sold everything and lost interest in playing. Yet, I am a regular visitor on here, keeping pace with the latest gear. It is incredible the vfm that is available. That these compare so well with the high end basses you mention, is wonderfull both for players starting out and for players wanting a very a solid instrument.

Then again, some years ago I picked up a Sire and was floored by the quality. At the time I was gigging a Sadowsky NYC.

That's because Adam is not Irish. He was born near Oxford and his family moved to Ireland when he was 5. The Edge is also not Irish and was born in Essex to Welsh parents and moved to Ireland when he was 1. Only Bono and Larry are Irish.

You mean to say England is 50% to blame?

I got heavily stung by this when I ordered a bass direct from Musicman in the US, the delivery dude turned up at my door with a card machine saying I owed 600 quid, after I paid it, I immediately sold the bass as I couldn't warrant it. I actually sold it including the import duty as anyone buying it would of paid the same.

Was £600 more than you anticipated paying in import charges?
