If it's awesome then that equates to value, in my books.

If we're going to be spending hours of our lives getting up to speed on a DAW frankly I don't have an issue spending more on an "awesome" DAW (in the same way that most of us, I suspect, recognise that an "awesome" bass, cab or amp is going to cost 2 or 3 times the amount of a run-of-the mill one).

I totally agree! Just unfortunately most of the time when you see the pharse “best value” what people actually mean is cheapest that will actually do the job...

I'm been thinking on this through the evening.  This is the approach I think I'll take...

Get super confident with the following scales / arpeggios:

    • Ionian & Aeolian Modes – (Master the 1st and 2nd finger positions)
    • Major, Minor and Dom7 Chord Tones – (Master the 1st and 2nd finger positions)
    • Major, Minor Pentatonic Sclaes – (Master the 1st and 2nd finger positions)

Get comfortable with common chord progressions

    • Analyse common chord progressions in music similar to that we play in Jam sessions
    • Source / create backing tracks with these chord progressions for Jam practice

    Transcribe and analyse existing music

    • Transcribe 1-4 bar bass lines i find interesting / inspirational (limited to 4/4 time for now)
    • Analyse transcriptions to understand their harmonic properties
    • Transcribe fills I hear and like, create a personal lick library to build ideas from

    Practice Jamming

    • Use aforementioned backing tracks and knowledge to jam with

Would love to hear other ideas...

This is a great plan mate! Excellent structure and you have given yourself clear goals that you can measure! I need to do the same thing for myself!

The other suggestion I would have for you is stick the radio on, or a Spotify playlist of the genre of music you like and just try to play along. Listen for a few bars then just try to play. It’s really hard at first but stick with it and you will be surprised with how quickly your ear improves.

    Just re-read this thread :)

Not one person coming out for Ableton Live as their preferred DAW?

I agree Ableton is awesome, and can do things that most DAW’s can only dream of, but for the full fat version it’s expensive, but I guess that opens up the value vs cost can of worms...

  4. My main bass is a 5 string tuned E-C, with a drop D tuner. It’s really good for chordal playing and soloing. The other big benefit for me of this instead of a 6 string is that muting is not as much of a challenge.

From reading the thread it sounds like a good octave pedal might be your best friend for this gig.

  5. When I had this amp I paired it with an RS210 & an RS212, it sounded great, and the cabs happily stack vertically.  I would recommend the RS212 especially when you can get a brand new one for £299 from Andertons just now!

I could be wrong but I believe this practice is not legal.

Having been in retail for over twenty years it was always drummed into us that there is a legal requirement to clearly display the price of a product and trading standards backed this up several times when there were things went wrong.

I seem to think there is a allowance for smaller stores, below a certain floor area, but I think that was in relation to the level of detail required to be displayed rather than being able to not display a price at all.

I'm sure trading standards would be interested in this case.....

Not illegal at all. Even if the wrong price is displayed the retailer has no legal responsibility to honour the price, as all displayed prices are an invitation to barter.

Trading Standards can make recommendations to retailers regarding trading practices, but I believe they have little power to enforce anything, the retailer  may need to show due diligence, however there are many loopholes.

All that being said in the age of social media, the customer has truly become king, and most large businesses will honour wrong prices etc as an act of goodwill in order to give “good service”.

  7. When you say you might get some monitors I would say I have some G3 KRK Rokit 5’s and I don’t recommend them at all, I find it much easier to hear with decent headphones.

The other advice I would give is stick the track into the DAW of your choice and EQ it to bring out the frequencies of the part you are trying to learn.

I’m ashamed to say I had a Sadowsky I didn’t like about 8 yrs ago. Sacrilege. It was a beautiful PJ, there was nothing wrong with it, I just couldn’t get the tone I was after from it.

On retrospect it was most likely because of my lack of playing ability and lack of knowledge about setups at the time. I’m fairly sure I could get it to do everything I need if I had it today, I probably just wasn’t ready for a Sadowsky yet.

Classic case of ‘all the gear and no idea’. I can get a tone I like out of almost any Fender-style bass nowadays so I definitely blame my ignorance rather than any deficiency with the Sadowsky. I wonder how many basses get the blame when the culprit is bad technique or a bad setup?

This is probably quite a common story. Some one buys a high end bass thinking it will make them sound like the pro’s that play them. They don’t sound like the pro, so the bass must go...

Sorry, I thought you were talking about active cabs.

Why would you worry about your amp? I don't see how anyone can mistreat an amp in a way that will damage it. Cabs, on the other hand, can be damaged by players not looking after them.

I was asking about active cabs. I have no problem with people using my amp, it would just be one less thing to carry for some gigs if I knew I wouldn’t be amp sharing. Sorry for all the confusion.

Not sure what you mean here. Do you mean by-pass the amp head (to distinguish it from the active cab) pre-amp? If so you are left with the same issue.

Sorry I wasn’t very clear here. I will use a normal cab with my amp and use the fx return. I just like the idea of a powered cab so that if I knew I wasn’t going to be amp sharing I wouldn’t take my amp.

I should probably add, in relation to the original post, that it means I am working on picking songs out from the record as there are no guides, scores or tabs. I'm loving it at the moment and I've not even done a rehearsal (just an audition).

I loved that challenge when I joined my current band! It really got my transcribing chops together. Before when transcribing if I was stuck I would find the dots or the tabs, but having no where to turn for answers it really helped my ear!

I would say not unless you could get an input straight to the speaker. Most actives seem only to have the mic/line input and so plugging the back of an amp into that is going to embed the speaker voice coil into the wall opposite it, I would suspect.

Other may have a different way to make it work but I haven't seen one that would allow for this without modification.

Thanks man I appreciate it, I will go with my other plan to run the helix through the effects return of my amp.
