The new Aerodyne Precision Special has the best pickup I've ever had on an Aerodyne.

Coupled with stuff like 12" radius, Babicz bridge, chamfered arm bit, torque adjustable tuners etc, very different beast.

Third time this week I've heard it's better in every way than the typical Guitar Center black Aerodyne.

(Looks like the GC Aerodyne has been discontinued, too...not showing up on the Fender site.)

    Thanks for the advise.

I do get where you are coming from.

But you say why buy just a decent bass?

Well cost for a start. I dont aim to be established in any way or be in a band. Way too old and starting too late for all that.

I'm just after something that I can learn to play along with music of the late 70 early 80s Post punk era

In that case, go to a few stores and try out as many basses as possible.

Some will look good, some will feel good and some will sound good.

Try enough basses and you'll find one that does all three.

Here are two typical package deals compared to $379.99 for a 40th-Anniversary Vintage Precision or Jazz.

    Really no comparison, actually.

As mentioned above, Harley Benton is a good choice, too.

  3. Might be a better idea to buy a good bass and then pick up a little practice amp. Those package deals aren't really good deals. We're talking bottom-line basses and you'll eventually have to buy something better if your serious.

I'm not saying they're bad basses, but why buy a decent bass when you can buy a great bass for a good price?

I've seen too many people quit because they bought the wrong bass. Don't be one of them.

Well, duh, it's because Gibson hates bassists in general.  And if you think they're going to demean themselves by talking to a filthy bassist such as yourself, you're dreaming!

    ;)

They never forgave me for selling my Thunderbirds and switching to the Thundergun.

I'm guessing they didn't really care what I played, but they definitely didn't like me saying it was the better bass on Geddy Lee's new TV docuseries.🤔

When the original models came out, the control knobs were in a line.  Yes, I know, these models aren't historically accurate blablablah, but it looks nicer in a line and you can use a right-angled jack and loop the cable round the strap button.

It was being facetious...I can't begin to imagine why they'd change it. Seems unnecessary and definitely doesn't look good.

If someone from Gibson knows, I'd like their take on it, though.

  6. Well, I put new strings on every bass I buy the first chance I get, but that's because I'm very particular when it comes to tone.

If you're not satisfied with your strings, all four of them, why not put on your favorite set?

Wonder if anyone else experience this, that you have gotten so used to one specific bass that everything else feels and sounds somewhat odd in comparison?

Cause I experience this with my main bass.

I might play on a different bass and be fine, even enjoy the different flavor, but then as soon as I go back to my main, it's almost like a relief, like realizing that I have missed it and feeling like coming home, even if I might not have noticed while playing the other bass, like getting back in your comfort zone after having been somewhat out of it.

Like: "Ah, this is what a bass is supposed to feel and sound like".

Which bass is your number one?

But it is a crafted in china CV that is being mentioned here?

    Classic Vibe was mentioned.

The CIC in my photo is a CV.

Someone asked how the current CV Jazz bass compared to the 40th anniversary Squier Jazz.

The current CVs aren't as good as the older ones.

They aren't as good as the 40th-Anniversary Jazz basses.

Opinion, of course, but an opinion with some weight behind it.

  9. If you plan on sticking with playing/learning the bass, you might want to consider buying something worth sticking with...G&L Tribute Fallout.

    Very versatile and extremely comfortable.

As mentioned above, the Squier Paranormal Rascal is a better bet than quite a few short-scale basses. If you see one, pick it up, plug it in and see for yourself.

(By the way, I started playing bass at 56 and believe me, comfort is very important...I've seen too many people quit because they bought the wrong bass. Don't let this happen to you. It's best to get out there and try as many basses as possible.

Someone suggested I buy a short-scale bass way back when, and I'm glad I ignored his advice, although there are plenty of good short-scale basses available now than ever before.)

How are these compared to the 40th anniversary Squiers? Still kicking myself for not picking one up when they were £259 at Thomann.

Nice bass, but not quite as good as my Vintage 40th-Anniversary Jazz, which I believe is right up there with my Crafted In China CV.

Not sure if this is sacrilege but I want a Stingray, that looks like a Stingray, but isn't £2000. I know you can get Sub ones etc... but I'd rather buy a fake that looks the part. Is this a possibility? I know they do it with Fender and Gibsons.

Thanks in advance for any advice...... or abuse!!!!!!

You'd rather by a fake than something like this Sterling that blows a mere copy out of the water?

I'm guessing OLP doesn't cut it, either.

    OK, a bit more info.

Two sets of Fender 9050L flats arrived, one set for each P. Did the new one first, not much adjustment needed, quite pleased.

Did the older bass then, equally easy to dial in. One thing I noticed was that the BBOT on the Squier looks noticeably heftier than the MIM 2003 original on the Fender. This irritates me somewhat, and I may yet replace both bridges. The Gotoh 201B-4 is the current favourite.

Plugging in and noodling through the Tascam trainer: the Squier is as loud, but is quite harsh-sounding compared to the Fender, and the controls are not wonderful. So I have a Tonerider pickup and a KiOgon loom here, and once I've spent the next set of free time rebuilding the PC i'm typing on, I'll rework the Squier. My expectations are not high, I'll be entirely happy if it just smooths things out a bit.

Have you tried it through an amp?

Other than that, this Tascam bass trainer?

Apologies for possibly derailing the thread, but these are amazing. Are the pickguards stock or custom? Never seen anything like it.

Both are custom...the mirror one is from Quick Guards and the abalone was made by a local guitar shop...a copy of a Reverend Thundergun pickguard, slightly cut down at the top.

Get a Squier 40th Anniversary Precision.

I went into Peach Music with the thought that I'd come out with a Fender CS or at least a US series bass.

This topped them all. Use your ears, not your eyes.

    Have to agree.

Tried quite a few Player basses, but I've always thought the quality simply doesn't justify the price.

Especially now, compared to the 40th Anniversary Squier basses.

This one's right up there with the Vintera basses.

    Could've bought a Vintera, could've bought two...but I didn't.

Bought the Vintage Precision and the Jazz.

As for going active, not for what you're planning.

Thanks for the replies all, I'm in Edinburgh. I was intending to get a bass amp at some point, so maybe next step is to take it to GuitarGuitar and try with some amps, that way I can choose an amp and test if thats the issue at same time. I had a closer look at the strings, they dont look corroded, so might not be them, but will change out anyway - thanks for the tip on tapewounds I'll get some.

If you do go with tapewounds, just remember to bend before cutting.

  16. Rumblekats are very nice basses and that's a problem I believe is probably something simple like strings, or maybe pickup height.

Other than that, I'd recommend black tapewounds.

As for using a guitar amp?

Okay in a pinch, but doesn't your bass deserves something better?
