    Dear all,

Putting this in and hoping the mods will pin it.

Looking to get people together for a NW (and Scottish) bass bash in Clapham, North Yorkshire sometime in May 2024, probably Sat May 11th. 18th (note that this has changed)

A number of people live a little north of London and even stuff in the Midlands is a pretty big schlep, so I thought we could get together for a day to playing bass somewhere closer for us.

The Clapham in question here, is NOT the one in South London, it doesn't have eye watering house prices, you can't go cottaging on the Common, you also can't buy Tofu in the local shop (actually you can but that's no fun). This Clapham is in North Yorkhire on the borders of Lancashire, Cumbria and North Yorkshire.

See here for more details https://claphamyorkshire.co.uk/

The village hall is community run and we can get it for a day in May, provissionally booked for Sat May 18th 2024 (please note, changed from 11th). It has 1Gb internet access so you aren't out of touch even for a day.

https://claphamyorkshire.co.uk/locals/clapham-village-hall/ <<- This is the right one :)

Clapham is 22 mins off the M6, 35 mins from Skipton, 45 mins from Lancaster and 40 mins from Kendal. It does have a train station and if anybody would like to come by train, we can arrange a free pickup. There is no taxi service there so don't even think about it.

My company will <ahem> sponsor the day so there is no cost to people. I'll see if I can persuade my kids to do teas and coffees.  There is a decent kitchen, but also we do have two excellent pizza joints nearby. My daughter works in one and so we may be able to get a deal,

I am happy to organise and sort things out, however I have never organised a bass bash so if people have ideas of what they want to see, do and have, speak out. If you assume anything, it will not happen, so speak out.

I'll check on what days in May are available. The committee is putting this all online so it's not live yet. I'll speak to them and get some dates.

I'll happily bring my kit along for people to use, I'm not precious about it. So there will be an Fender Jazz bass, a Fender Mustang bass, an Ibanez Mikiro bass, a couple of six string electric, including my 3d printed electric. I *may* have completed a 3d printed bass by then as well, a small Ampeg 30W practise amp and quite a few extension cables. I can also bring a few laptops and ipads as well. The wifi is free.

Can I get some expressions of interest please and also some thoughts on what to do on the day.

    Thanks

    Rob

Basically someone brings food, a selection of their bass gear, amps, and you char and try each others things. Raffle, sometimes

sometimes builders and Luthiers attend also and sometimes there are demonstrations

generally 20-30 people in a village hall

I can do a bigger event than that. The hall I can use has a 100 capacity, there is a free car park and it is a lovely friendly pub with food etc. There is a stage and I have all my own PA and backline + drums, strat guitar, 2x4-string and 1x5-string bass guitars

  3. I've done the guitar shows over the last few years, and the bass presence (if at all) is token.

Am I missing something? I can't believe that there are so few Bass guitar gatherings and events, swap-shops, jams.

There must surely be a host of smaller bass specific events; can anybody help please?

I am in the East Midlands.

    Thankyou

  4. Thank you everyone. All new to me, and most things I found (before asking you all for help) were for increasing and decreasing a regular guitar (as opposed to a bass) by one octave. Will read up on the ones I've been told about, and check the frequency range that my amp combo will tolerate before damage is done. Not sure if I have to consider impedence too. Take care - can't wait until the bass shows can start again!

  5. Hello there Everybody, I hope you are all well. I'm trying to find an effects pedal that makes my bass sound at least an octave lower, but without otherwise distorting the sound of my bass too much. The lower the octave, the better as far as I'm concerned. Has anyone got any suggestions for me please? Are there any pedals where you have the option of lowering the octaves by more than one octave please? Thank you very much 🙂

  6. Thank you very much Seashell! I'd just turned 55 🙂

I'm developing some lovely callouses now, and I'm at numb fingertips stage, but I love learning bass so much.

May I ask, are you also a mermaid (scuba diver)? Just wondered because of your Basschat name. Also, what music genres/bass make you favour. Bass has made me realise that my musical tastes go beyond blues rock - I have been dabbling with bits and bobs by David Bowie, Michael Jackson, the Rolling Stones (of course), Sting, Fleetwood Mac, and my teacher has got me doing the Rock School series, and I have learnt to keep up with Green Onions (needs refinement though).

I would like to be in a group some day too. So many people just seem to get the proverbial carpet slippers out once they hit 50, but I believe age is no limit, and with determination people can find a way to do most anything.

    Good to chat,

Take care of you and yours,

    Dawn x

  7. Hi there everyone! Hope you are all looking after yourselves! I'm not quite sure that this is the place to say so, but here goes!

My usual face-to-face teacher is unable to teach at the moment, so I decided to try an online source. Don't get me wrong, we all know that there is no real substitute for the face-to-face in person type of teaching, but needs must at the moment, and I don't want to fall behind or develop bad habits, and I have to say that despite initial reservations, I have been very pleasantly surprised at how well things are going, and I would like to recommend Mr Nigel Beer if anyone is wanting to brush up, or learn from scratch like me. The beauty of his lessons is that it wouldn't matter where in the world you are, so long as you have access to media such as Skype, you can learn (or improve) and he can teach! It's great! He's not the cheapest, but his teaching is value for money, and I want to put his name out there as musicians per se are struggling to earn their living with COVID-19 right now. He can be contacted at:

    [email protected]

I asked him if it was OK to give him a 'thumbs up' to my friends and he said yes. He's a very nice person too, and he makes the lessons enjoyable as well as beneficial.

Thank you very much for reading, but I think he's a bit of a hidden treasure!

    Take care all,

    Dawn

  9. I'm very new to playing the bass, but I realise now that right from being a little girl, it is the bass part of music which usually makes me like a particular piece. I'm very, very lucky as my lovely husband has just treated me to a Sire Marcus Miller P7 Swamp Ash 4 White Blonde (on its way from Germany as we communicate) as a special present.

Can anybody tell me what I might do to alter the sound of my new bass to replicate that Stones sound please as closely as possible please? I like their 60s and 70s stuff best of all (not so keen on their disco era, although I do like Miss You and Emotional Rescue) and that's what I want to play.

I am very new to this; you have all been great with your help and advice up to now. I have a hell of a lot to learn, but I'm loving it, and can't wait to get home after work to do my practice once the usual house jobs are done with!

Thank you very much folks for any shared wisdom 🙂

  10. Hello there, and welcome! I only started playing about a month ago at age 55, and all the advice given in response to you about stretching hands etc is fantastic for me too. I have fairly big hands for a woman, but got an inexpensive short scale Harley Benton for starting out (not too much of an outlay if the bass turned out not to be for me). What I have now found though after holding other people's bass guitars, is that a normal sized jazz neck is easier for me to handle (even though it is significantly longer) than my short scale! This surprised me no end, but now I'm after a Marcus Miller P7 Swamp Ash 4 White Blonde 2. This has a thinner neck and the precision style body, which is a nice compromise for me, plus, I LOVE the look of this baby!

  11. I would really like to get hold of a Marcus Miller P7 Swamp Ash 4 White Blonde 2. Andertons are getting them back in July, and Thomanns have one but for quite a bit more than some are asking (due to export costs etc). Does anyone know of anywhere else in the UK that might sell them, or has anyone got this and they'd like to sell it? Thank you very much for any forthcoming advice and help.

  12. Just joined this forum and wanted to say 'hello' to everyone! I'm a late starter at this game - always wanted to learn bass but never got around to it until now! At the moment I have a short scale Harley Benton (sometimes you think you might like to learn something then discover it's not for you - didn't want to spend too much to begin with), but I like the Sire Version 2 Marcus Miller P7 with its precision body and thinner jazz style neck. I am learning with a pick at the moment, but think now after a few lessons that I'd like to learn to play without the pick too.
