1. I switched to DR Black Beauties about a year ago and have bought around 5 or 6 sets since to fit on all my basses. I get them from an eBay seller in the USA and they work out at pretty well bang on £20 a set including postage. They usually take about a week and I haven't had a single problem with the strings or HMC&E. I think they are brilliant.
2. I owned one for a little while - it was extremely good and excellent vfm. Got rid of it as, at the time, I didn't see a use for a fretless other than spare room noodling. Having said that, if the day came when I was looking for a fretless bass but didn't want to spend a lot of money, I'd get a second hand fretless SGC Nanyo Bass Collection - same sort of money but a much better quality instrument IMO. I guess it is down to looks etc at the end of it.
3. OK, thanks. Explains the radio silence, anyway - I thought it was something I said. Well, I suppose it was, really
4. Prett please help? You could save unnecessary torture of a poor Fender?
5. it's alright..... he's from Barcelona. Basil Fawlty rules
6. In another topic, probably in the wrong forum, I was asking about my Fender Precision Lyte pre-amp. I've since been thinking and now wonder if the problem might not be the pre-amp at all - can someone please help? One of the knobs doesn't work. I think it is the bass boost/cut but it is hard to actually say which when only one of them is working. But a thought struck me this morning - that the fact one of the knobs works just fine and the bass plays and sounds ok - does this indicate that there is nothing wrong with the pre-amp but just with the pot?
7. I asked a very similar question recently. I was told the issue with connecting 2+ pedals to one power supply is whether the adapter has sufficient output. Mine didn't so I bought a new Boss one that did, together with a 5x way daisy chain all from the same eBay shop that cost about 311 all in incl. postage. There is sufficient 'headroom' (does that same expression still apply? Spare output?) in the adapter for me to add more pedals, which I have.
8. I was thinking this morning... it is only one of the boost/cut knobs that doesn't work (I think it is the bass boost/cut but not sure as there is only the one to compare). Does this mean that the preamp itself is ok and I only need to replace the pot? I haven't opened it up to have a look but, if so, would there be a mark on the pot that would indicate what type/value it is? And how critical is this? I have the pot taken from the original SGC Nanyo electrics knocking about, for example - I am guessing this might do the job? If not, what would I need and where would I get one from? This all sounds rather vague - up until now I've always sent my stuff off to a local guy. But I've recently been fiddling about with a soldering iron and now feel confident to do this replacement myself, but have no actual understanding of the bits and pieces involved!
9. He just upped his start price to £150 from £50. I imagine 9/10 of the people watching will be dropping out now, including me.
10. I chose the TC Classic 450 over the Orange Terror Bass as I thought it was more flexible. Not only can you get the tube sound (which IMO was easier to dial in something useable in the Classic 450) but you can turn it down and it is a lot cleaner. But it is all so subjective! But another contender - out of my price range at the time - would possibly be the Little Mark Tube?
11. Putting this on here on behalf of my brother-in-law. Here´s what Gretsch say on their website: "The Gretsch® G5566 JetTM Double Neck combines a standard guitar and a baritone guitar in one single- cutaway solid-body instrument. Features include bound top, maple necks with rosewood fingerboards (24.75" guitar scale length; 29.75" baritone scale length), dual mini-humbucking pickups (baritone) and dual chrome-covered humbucking pickups (guitar), three-position pickup switch for each instrument, two- position neck selection switching, dual Adjusto-MaticTM bridges, silver-sparkle finish, and B60 (baritone) and B50 (guitar) Bigsby®-licensed vibrato tailpieces. ($1,600.00)" It is pretty well un-played, bought on a whim. I don't even think it has been out of his house! he is asking £[s]450 -[/s] [s]£400 [/s] [s]just £375![/s] - NOW ANY SERIOUS OFFER CONSIDERED. No case so collection only from Wanstead E11 or a meet up for cost of fuel. PM me for further details if interested. 12. HJ - how heavy are these? I suspect extremely, as they are mahogany...
13. Thanks for the input chaps. Well, I have a P-retro fitted to a bass (Thunder Jet, left) and know how that expanded the tonal range when coupled with a Kent Armstrong pup. My main query was really how much was down to the pup and how much down to the pre-amp and it is beginning to look like the Artec isn't such a good idea. Out of curiosity, I saw this in the classifieds here and wondered if it is a good pre-amp? Spectre Tone Pump
14. I don't know if that explains what I am asking - I'll try to expand a bit. Background - I have an SGC Nanyo Bass Collection SB-310, which is the active version. It sounded a little bit thin when I first had it and, following recommendations on here, changed the on-board preamp to an Artec one. Very cheap, easy to do and very effective. Although the basic tone of the bass remained the much same, it seems to have opened up the range of sounds more. That probably doesn't explain it any better - hopefully you'll understand what I mean. Anyway, I have a Fender Precision Lyte which has a completely different sound to the Bass Collection - a sound I would ideally like to keep and expand upon. However, one of the boost/cut pots is defying attempts to be repaired. Getting an original replacement I am told would be expensive if, indeed, it were even possible. So I am thinking of putting in one of the Artec Preamps. As the pickups are Fender ones, not SGC Nanyo ones, I am hoping this would affect the sound in much the same way as it did with the SGC Nanyo bass - would it sound much the same as before but more 'articulate'? Or would it just sound like the SGC Nanyo - would the influence of the pre-amp overule the pickups - in which case there would seem little point doing it. Thanks!
15. I have a liking for skinny, fast necks - both narrow and shallow. Of those I have tried and owned my SGC Nanyo is probably the best - certainly overall it is my most comfortable and playable bass and the one I use for longer rehearsals. I haven't tried the Ibanez/Yamaha basses that look similar as I understand they don't bring much to the party that SGC Nanyo doesn't already do better. That might be wrong. Although looking completely different, a similar feeling neck for me is that on my Fender Precision Lyte, and also my Fender Power Jazz Bass Special (which beats everything else hands down on tone). I used to own a Fender Jaguar - this also has a very narrow and shallow neck. I believe the Geddy Lee bass also has this same skinny and shallow neck but I've never actually picked one up to try it. But another unlikely candidate is the Epiphone T-Bird Pro - I had one of those for a while and the neck was gorgeous - it's best feature IMO. Also some Peavey basses might be worth looking at - I had a Milestone III that had a lovely fast neck, I think maybe some of the 'better' models do also. But as has been said, if it ain't broke, why try to fix it - if SGC Nanyo does it so well, why change it* * With the caveat that I can't stop keep looking at others either....
16. Rhythm guitarist does this at the beginning of Crazy Train. It is played like that is some live versions, so I think he thinks there is an excuse.
17. I think this open grain light sheen finish is superb. There is a thread somewhere that I can't find called something like 'spraying the neck'? where trying to get an ebony finish on a fretboard is discussed. There is some leather stain/polish that brings up the wood like ebony, apparently - and I was wondering if it might do this to the body of a bass? maybe with oil or wax coating. Be easier than spraying to a clutz like me. I guess, as it isn't expensive, the answer would be to buy some and try it out on a scrap of wood.

19. Thanks for that. Olive oil method?
20. These stickers are quite bright immediately after exposure to light but they do lose the strength of luminescence fairly quickly. Having said that they keep enough going to make them visible on a dark stage, even after my basses have been sat in a case for a while before hand. I believe you can 'top them up' with a little torch or similar - I have never tried as they work well enough for me as is.
21. Any update re this? Interested to hear how you got on.
22. I got these stickers and used a hole punch to make circles. They stick quite well and only one has come off so far.
23. Weird one. Played a charity gig at the Haystack PH in Canvey just after the carnival had finished. Started off with a decent crowd that slowly evapourated until by the end of the first set we had maybe just 3 people watching. We almost didn't bother with the second set but decided to treat it as a free rehearsal. Anyway, by the end of the second set we had a small but loud crowd back and weren't let go until we had done 3 encores. A different, more appreciative audience to the first lot, I suppose. My gear sounded great but I played like an idiot and made more mistakes than ever. By contrast our guitarist has just got a new Gibson Flying V and I reckon he got a little bit of Michael Schenker with it as his playing was awesome - our last encore was 'Rock Bottom' and he was absolutely the nuts.
