  1. if you are having surgery on your fretting hand and you are a guitar player, you shouldn't try to play bass. it will put a lot of stress on it. I wouldn't recommend it. talk to your doctor. if you finally decide to do it, go to a really good teacher with good technique. I have been able to solve a lot of techinque issues with my students online. but sometimes a presential class is the only way to fix the smallest mistakes that we do when playing.
  2. the pick is just another tool to use on the palette of sounds you can get with a bass. and there are plenty of examples of people getting a warm tone even with a pick Steve Swallow is the first that comes to my mind and here in Spain we have the great Carles Benavent
  3. if you don't have the timing and you don't groove, you are not a good player. and elastic time is not the same as sloppy, this is sloppy
  4. maybe I am just lazy, but to me extensions have no big importance when creating a bass line. I will stick to my old faithfull triads and do my job. I hope the piano player to not step on my roots so I won't step on his chords. mostly because in the end the harmony player is who decides whether to use the extensions as written or to change them by his discretion. and to do so he expects us to play very clear. it will be different in a drum/sax/bass trio or when there is no player playing harmony and that lets you the freedom to be more open. in case of doubt, I try to go origins, and this guy really repeats roots with no shame and sounds amazing
  5. normally I am in Madrid, but nowadays I am playing in Barcelona until the musical BILLY ELLIOT ends
  6. I got mine used in a shop in Boston. I bought it when I was studying at Berklee. I didn't know that it is a rare bass. red is my favourite color and I fell in love with its sound, so it was love at first sight.
  7. I live in Madrid, but I am moving to Barcelona next month Hola, but whatever works to communicate works for me.
  8. thank you all for the warm welcome
  9. hi, I have been reading this forum for a while, but never said anything. so as I am planning to be more active, it is polite to introduce myself. I am from Spain, studied at Berklee, a professional musician. Nowadays I live in Madrid but probably will move to Barcelona after summer to work at the musical Billy Elliott. I have been playing for 30 years. not much a gearhead, much centered in music. so hello everyone, I hope not to break too many rules in my first steps here. if you want to know more details about me, my page is www.albertanguela.com
  10. huge fan of Pino here. some months ago I made this video discussing the line he plays on the second tune of the NPR concert with Blake Mills. the second half of the video is the English version, so you can go there if you don't understand Spanish, maybe you won't understand my English either but I am trying my best. if you want to download the score for the line and the exercices you can do it here: https://www.albertanguela.com/post/pino-palladino
