These are the first exercices for a method I am currently developing. The point here is to tap the CLAVE with your foot and play the notes with your bass. These seem pretty basic, but don't be fooled. Never go for the next one until you feel really comfortable playing the exercise you are working and can feel naturally all the beats of the two bars. specially the downbeats

another one from James Taylor. Lee played this same tune two years ago and there are very few differences. it always amazes me how consistent he is with the lines he plays. I am catching up as I can with the transcriptions. another Lyle Lovett's one that Leland had played already last year. still surprises me how consistent Lee is with his lines. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1n8Yc7gQshKrvqYB24lddjxc1WLKeyK2S/view?usp=drive_link link video: https://youtu.be/_022xqE4nO4

when practicing right hand technique, I always make my students play everything starting with each one. it is normal to have a preferred one. when I find myself starting all with the same one, I practice the other way around and then the secondary becomes primary and the story goes on and on
-
I would recommend to strict alternate fingering. if you master that, then to do a rake if needed is easy. the other way around is not so easy

after a long time Leland has played again. wishing a fast recovery to his wife Maureen link a la partitura: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VME7s-kVtyGXd0XXkkJrhSLMDOpveJZX/view?usp=drive_link link al video: https://youtu.be/ItzBaC4BUho

that's is why I never rake. I started my playing doing it and happened to me. then switched to strictly alternating. it was a pain for several months but it was worth it. and you know what? if really needed, I can still do it

Pick or Fingers … ongoing dilemma!!
bassalbert replied to BassAdder60's topic in Theory and Technique
I am not really a pick guy, but I use it when needed, sometimes in the middle of the song. I see no big problem in mixing techniques -
if your internal clock is ok I will suggest to take some classes with a teacher that can fix your technique, it will be hard to fix that by yourself. you can try a couple of things: if you start always with the same finger on your right hand, try studying in reverse for a while and see what happens try to play in front of a mirror to see if you observe a difference in the plucking with your fingers

Billy Cobham total eclipse counting
bassalbert replied to Fishfacefour's topic in Theory and Technique
at least, that is how I hear it. with these things, different people hear different signatures, but that made a lot of sense for me -

A pick to pick when you need a pick
bassalbert replied to BassAdder60's topic in Theory and Technique
try the TUSQ ones, really a different sound -
without seeing you, it seems you are using a style of plucking similar to Stanley Clarke's. there are no good or bad techinques. each of them gives different sounds to your palette to choose. I always recommend my students to explore that part of the bass technique. normally people learn some way of plucking and stays there for ever till they die. well, I think they are missing something
