1.
Ooh, that's an early one!. Very good condition as well by the looks of it. Nice score :) Try calling Dawn at Status. She has complete lists of the serial numbers/ages of the basses they've made. 01206 868150

Thanks - just have. 1990.

  2. Just arrived from vmaxblues - thanks Stuart.

    Status 4000. Resin body and graphite bolt-on neck. Serial #196 - 1990.

Strings are a bit dead but still sounds good. Yet to plug it into my amp and use loud but will report back.

  3.
Jokes aside, that guy is seriously talented! I play all those instruments, but none of them to the standard that he does!
+1.

The more you watch it, you realise how difficult it is to pull that off. Can't fault him on any instrument - just wish I could do it!

  4.
MB1. :)
    .....Still Blue!
    BUMP!
I think MB1's angling after the neck.

Edit: actually MB1-kenobi, this would be a cracking bass for you. Offer to buy the body too.

  5.
He's a really nice bloke - I told him that `Haitian Divorce' is one of the best basslines ever recorded - he clasped my hand and said `bless you man' - I was nearly in tears!!! When you meet someone of his musical stature, you can't help but be moved by it.
You should have seized the moment and tried to flog him one of your 54 basses! :)

  6. BGM's got a lot better looking recently but it's still an un-inspiring read and lacking a bit, editorially. They need to get away from doing long drawn out Q+As with players people have never heard of/care about and work up some better editorial features. It needs a bit of attitude in the writing too; a sense of humour, a sense of fun. It still feels a bit cut and paste - esp the news section. The reviews also need a bit of edge to them, it's boring to read 10 paragraphs listing the features on a bass, when I can see what it does by looking at the picture. Tell me if it's any good, if you took it to a gig and got laughed at or got compliments on it, show me how it fits in the back of a hatchback (or doesn't) etc etc. Take a look at What Car - it's a good example of how to make something samey (new car reviews) sound interesting every month.

  7.
As long as the bridge works and looks ok - I'd keep it - brass and meaty. If it's tarnished you can clean them up a treat with metal polish.
..and if you ever want to sell it on, it will look better with the original on it.

  8.
Is it likely to really be in D but played detuned by a semitone to get more open strings?
Doesn't seem the easiest key when using standard tuning.
Yep, he plays a lot of the songs on a detuned (by half step) bass. Says he does it becuase Brandon Flowers writes a lot of stuff in Eb.

That what he told me once, anyway... :)

  9.
I think it's the romance of an old Fender. But they don't often deliver on the dream I imagine.

I've played a few, they were all mediocre, one in particular was a hideous natural wood Jazz from the '70s. It weighed a bloody ton, sounded ordinary, played like sh*te.
+1. While they look nice I 've yet to find one I could actually gig with. But each to their own.
