…. So after buying a superb secondhand Vigier Excess 5 from Mattbass6 on this forum, I realised I’m not such an intuitive 5 string player and sold it on vowing that I would get another Vigier.

Being simply blown away by the craftsmanship I had to get a 4 string.

One pilgrimage to Bass Direct in Warwick (thanks Ashley and Mark) later, I am the proud owner of this beauty…

My goodness it’s fast, punchy, modern and I love it!

Sorry for the thread dredge, but I just saw a video of someone player a passion and I was blown away by the sound they got, so I thought I'd check basschat and see who owns one.

    Your bass is fantastic!

    Any playing clips?

What is the fingerboard made from?

I'm now a bit of a fan of Vigier Passions and would especially love to try a fretless one

Yeah I have been keeping an eye out or contemplating stretching the budget. Also contemplated a Yamaha DXR15 but I would have to order without trying.

I'm weighing up the cheaper cousin a DBR12.

Yamaha stuff is really good and you have access to a 4 year warranty.

Having been in settings with QSC and RCF powered speakers going pop (or rather dead) the weak links are the power modules.

I would be wary of buying any of these cheaper PA speakers second hand without a warranty as getting them repaired is a hassle.

Yeah I think if I was going to put out a physical release now, it would be vinyl with a download code.

    Si

    This is what I'm doing.

Just don't be in a hurry.

Basically a Year turnaround on current quotes I'm getting

We're about to re release our long sold out first CD, remixed, bonus tracks etc.

These days quite a lot of people don't have a CD player, so what's the alternative apart from downloads and streaming? which don't produce much revenue, and like a lot of small bands we sell most of our music at gigs

Anybody tried selling them at gigs from a memory stick or something similar?

Have you got many gigs lined up for this year?

    It's a really tricky situation.

I would buy a CD over a memory stick, but I own a CD player and like to keep listening to music as far away from the interface of laptop/phone as possible.

My merch sales nosedived through 2019, to the point it wasn't worth lugging the stuff to gigs anymore (even sales of downloads at shows).

I haven't got many shows planned for 2022 and really don't know what to do. I miss the money from merch sales so want to maximise the chance fans will buy something, but minimise expenditure.

Download codes included with whatever you sell is mandatory really, in which case maybe stick to CDs?

I don't doubt those trace elliot 2X8"s sound fine, but they will be a considerable step down in quality to your Epifani, which I believe is more sensitive than the trace.

yeah they are 5kg lighter than your cab, but you describe liking power and I can't believe these trace cabs will provide the scale of sound you like.

I say this as an ardent user of small cabs with smaller size drivers, but (call me a cynic) I can only see these trace cabs are built down to a price point and there are higher quality options put there for not much more money.

If you are patient you could probably score another UL210 for not much more than the cost of a new 2x8.

I know which I'd want to be playing through 😃

What you'll end up with is a blown 4 ohm resistor. If you must use a second cab make it identical to what you have now. If your amp won't handle a 2 ohm load you'll need a break out box to series wire them.

    Cheers Bill!

That's the info I needed, thank you

  7. A question for electrical and amplification wizards:

I have a 4ohm speaker cabinet, which I'd like to augment with an 8ohm cabinet (both simple, single speaker designs).

This pairing will go below the minimum 4ohm load of my amp.

I know in reality at low volumes I'll be fine, but in case I want to push it a bit I'd be wary of damage to the amp.

If I connect a four ohm resistor in series in the 4ohm cabinet, therefore taking the total impedance to 8ohms, would I end up with a satisfactory result?

Thanks for any pointers and info'

Thank you for your kind words.

I purchased the Faital RS140 from Blue Arran it was one of the last in stock, I was told that the shipment due in March would suffer a price increase. It cost me £77. But take a good look at the Fane 6-100 that Phil used it's a bit heavier but has a fantastic performance.  I chose the Faital because of its higher power rating.

Not sure I'm sufficently competent enough to post a video,  but listen to Phil Starr's live video on the House Jam Micro Cab thread, it will surely surprise you.

Ah I wondered of you'd got one of the last ones. Like you I was looking for something that could take a bit more power if the situation called.

    The Backstory

Once or twice a month during the long winter several friends and acquaintances gather in the bar of a village pub to enjoy a jam and general sing-along. With ages ranging between late 60s and 70s the music is very broad and covers, 60s/70s pop, Delta Blues, traditional Blues, soft rock, Celtic folk and of course always end with Sir Tom’s Delilah. Simple rules No amps No Mics just acoustic guitars & instruments, generally there’s 3 or 4 guitars, mandolin, Bodhrán and vocals. My Fender Kingman is a great bass with 34 ins scale Jazz neck and huge body which resonates quite well, BUT just gets lost amongst the other instruments.

So, I have been pondering for a while for some form of non-intrusive sound reinforcement, something small that could be tucked away under a table and linked wirelessly to the Kingman.

    The Concept

I have followed with interest the posts on the Warwick Gnome, Trace Elf and @Phil Starr House Jam Micro cab, and decided to build a micro combo.

I purchased the TC BAM200 as the internal DFM (design for manufacture) really appealed to me with no cable harnesses and an elegant single PCB layout. BTW it was also the cheapest at the time!!

    BAM.thumb.jpg.9f70ee1d2293c46e3a426d6d5b71df93.jpg.18378ee16249c1f26497d342fe663766.jpg

I chose a Faital RS140 speaker mainly as it had a 200w rating and the specs suggested that it had a reasonable low end.

To create a combo from Phil’s cab design I could have added a simple slot above the cab but being so physically small access to the controls would have been inconvenient. So I decided to clone the popular combo approach by adding a recess to the back of the cab and having the controls pointing upwards. There was a bit of head scratching to shuffle around each of the elements changing Phil’s square cubbish cab to a taller bi-dimensional cab layout.

    The Build

Following Phil’s tried and tested method I used 12mm Ply and 12 x 15mm battens but used my pneumatic nail gun with 15mm & 30mm brads.

    20211231_140742.thumb.jpg.da21dc092a370281b287aa4fa923edb7.jpg

There was a fair amount of extra routering to form the access to the amps controls.

    20220102_130326.thumb.jpg.bcc4cf517ea1d71c917948440ca26dad.jpg

Because of bi-dimensional rear there seemed little need for additional bracing but I did add a brace between the back and the baffle.

    20220102_130348.thumb.jpg.50240e52f6b9c06cb06243c1cb0dbac5.jpg

Tuff Cab rules, several coats with brush and roller, and the cab was lined with the fibre wadding.

    20220109_144141.thumb.jpg.8cd412593ede761bb654495eb8511a60.jpg

The amp was held in with 10mm x 2 mm aluminium bar lined with speaker mounting rubber tape.

The amp fixing bar is held with 2 x 5mm Allen bolts so is easily removed if I need to use the amp as a backup for my other rigs.

    20220107_124538.thumb.jpg.5dae105d7ab97002e81cc76429538a13.jpg

I added slots in the cab walls on the RHS to provide some ventilation and also had to drill a few holes in the Aluminium bar to avoid covering some of the vent holes on the amps side.

    20220107_144351.thumb.jpg.c823b55c501f2f12444b1e0d0fc0e715.jpg

The Faital RS140 is a fine piece of engineering with RMS rating of 200w, even though the BAM200 only outputs around a 100w at 8 ohms I wanted sufficient speaker head room just in case I added an extra 8 ohm cab in the future.

    20220107_145459.thumb.jpg.e8a4d67c37bd4722ada4d7585ef81a55.jpg

I hit a few tuning issues but with the help of @Phil Starr I replaced the 70mm port with a single 38mm port. In the end I added a second 38mm port to reduce the "chuffing" and improve the low end performance. ( Can anyone spot the deliberate mistake!!)

    20220109_151103.thumb.jpg.9cb56ef31147aebe87a0154bcbbfff2f.jpg

I had some Fender style speaker cloth and a Fender logo in the basement so used both to finish the job.

Fender Micro CHAMP , CHIMP  IMP Combo

    20220112_091949.thumb.jpg.f9994a2b7ade9728135da686e2e3c6c9.jpg

The amp recess at the rear turned out well and with the aid of @Chienmortbb superb speaker cable the combo looks reasonably presentable.

    20220112_092545.thumb.jpg.79ae28913d952add9c53ad71592ea734.jpg

I still may do some further faffing around with ports and cab tuning but with my Lekato 5.2Ghz wireless system I can hide the combo under a table in the bar and no one will ever know I'm breaking the acoustic only rules!!!

I plan for the Micro combo to live in the lounge tucked away by the side of the TV so with a bass plugged into my Zoom B1 Four sat on the sofa and out with the Lekato to the combo I don't have any leads trailing across the lounge floor and I can play-along with YouTube and DVDs at a sensible level.

    Happy Days!!

    20220112_092529.jpg

    This is absolutely superb!!

May I ask some obligatory annoying questions?

How much did the Faital speaker cost?

Would it be possible to have a playing video to gauge sound levels?

Once again, absolutely superb work and a real inspiration, thank you

Hi. Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere on this site.  Has anyone played, experienced or owned the new Hartke HL series cabs please?  I've seen the few videos, announcements etc.  but I'd like to hear some informed genuine user reviews. Thanks

Subscribing to this as I would be interested to know as well

Out of interest what draws you to Hartke speakers?

I have a soft spot for Hartke as I was an ardent user in the late 90's early 2000's, but sold my rig once my performance needs changed.

I've just had a look at the HL112 cabinet and nothing in the (limited) information from Hartke jumps out as exceptional. Due to how limited the information is I can't really see what the difference is between the older HD112 other than it seems to be ~2kg lighter.

Maybe that is the only difference?

The HD112 goes for about £350 new so wonder what the HL112 will be priced at?

Are there any PJB amp users on this forum?

I am looking for a small amp for mainly home use and the size of these amps seems great. Looks like some of the combos could be tucked away out of sight and moved from room to room rather easily.

Just how good do they sound at low volume levels?

Would they handle my active 5 string without breakup?

I use my double4 to boost my contrabassoon at all my gigs.

That goes to Bb, a semitone lower than a five string, before I've added any effects and it handles it perfectly.

The double4 and the Bass Cub are really fantastic combos.

I'd love to try the new bass cub pro as well, which is a serious step up in volume capability over the original cub due to being able to run an extra speaker cab.

Arguably there are no better tiny combos, but whether they are worth the expenditure is up to you.

ie the same money would buy you a bigger, but louder amp or you could get something of a similar size, but less refined for a lot less.

  12. Happy new year everyone,

I'm looking for recommendations on PA hire companies in London, yes I know how to use Google, but as always like the feedback of users here 😀

I'm looking to get prices/quotes for a pair of 12", full range PA tops with possibly a sub (doesn't need to be super loud)

    Cheers

  13. These are superb amps.

My friend had the Sunn 300t (which I understand is identical) in the early 2000's.

It was undeniably impressive when I heard it and then he asked me to help move it....

Let us know what the up-rated power tubes through that 18" sound like (I'm guessing righteous)

  14. This subject has been done to death over and over, but I'll answer with no tongue in cheek.

I need as small a cabinet(s) as possible for my live shows, both for transport and aesthetic reasons.

I became a convert to using 8" speakers after making a DIY cab when I played double bass.

I've since gone smaller and use phil Jones equipment with 5" and 4" speakers and can't really imagine using anything else now.

If I had the guarantee of enough of the right shows this year my top tip (for myself) would be to augment my Phil Jones Double4's with a Cub Pro BG120 combo and C4 extension cabinet.

I've been wondering whether there's a natural tone difference between the same model bass as a 4 and 5 string version.

I've got a Sterling Ray34 and Ray35 which have the same body and neck material, same tuners, same bridge and same nut. The pickups are supposed to be 4 & 5 string version of the same pickup. They both have the same Daddario XL strings.

With the eq set flat, the five string sounds much fatter and just better.

Is this down to the wider neck or some other difference due to the extra string?

I bet you my Ray34 sounds different to yours, even if I put your strings on 😎

The differences you're hearing are very likely from the electronics, but I don't doubt the neck will have some effect.

Though did I get the end right, despite all that fancy set up Warren just took the isolated DI feed?

I think what he was saying was for the DI signal he took it straight from Seans own DI box.

He didn't route that signal through anything else (compressor, channel strip etc etc).

By "Third Party Insurance" do you mean Public Liability Insurance? This is the ones venues normally ask for.

We use AMPband and have done for years. Not sure what individual membership is, but for a 9 piece band it is £69 a year and that includes PLI up to £10m

Here's the website and if you decide to go with them put out membership number in, 61244, as an introducer and we get some credit towards our next renewal.

    https://ampband.co.uk/secure/member_home.php

just did a quick quote - 49quid for solo performer.

I would want to know that would extend for PLI cover for workshops in addition to gigs so will drop them a line.

    Thanks for the heads-up!

I will definitely put your referral in if I insure with them
