This is my last resort! I like the satisfaction of being able to do it myself although in this case a good luthier may be the way forward!

Thanks for your reply. I’ve got the neck fairly straight, just a very slight bow. Compared to my Warwick thumb it’s very straight. The Warwick is set up really nicely. Though I have tried more relief in the Bongo and after saddle adjustment I have the same problem. I’ve not changed string gauges recently. I’ve just not played the Bongo for about a year or more and when I came back to it I noticed the action was terrible and tried to make adjustments and now this problem. I’ll try more relief in the neck again like you suggested.

I’ve got more than 3mm at the 12 feet and still buzzing. I have already taken care of the nut slot height and pretty happy with that. It’s not individual frets but really all frets from the 7th onwards that are a problem. I’m curious to understand what you mean when you say shim the neck to get the correct angle? We will get to the bottom of this problem 😂

I usually set up my own basses and can nearly always get them just the way I like them but I have a Musicman Bongo 5 and have been trying to set it up nicely. Recently I made some adjustments too the saddles and truss rod as the action was too high for me and also had fret buzz on all strings from the 7th fret onwards. I haven’t had much success and have settled for a compromise of action that is too high and a little fret buzz on these frets. Any suggestions to remedy this are more than welcome. Thanks Colin

I bought Wayne’s Aguilar TM500 amp and he was a pleasure to deal with from the start to the finish. He had offered tea and coffee if it was possible to go to his house and try the amp out but that wasn’t possible for me. He instead placed a tea bag and a chocolate roll inside the carefully and wonderfully prepared bullet proof package that contained the amp. What a great guy. Many thanks Wayne. I swap a lot between normal playing and slappy stuff so im really just looking to level out the peaks that I get when I slap. Also when I go to lower notes on the 5th string it can get a lot louder and would just like to tame that a bit. Any effects I use are pretty subtle so I dont see them giving me any problems if I put it at the front. Am I right in thinking that for me it doesn't really matter as it will compress the signal either way?

Thanks for all your input. I'll try it before and after a few times. Doddy's reply confirmed what I was sort of thinking and it will even out things after any effects. I had a little go of it earlier and I think I will probably end up with it at the start of the chain. Its a nice compressor

I am waiting on getting a markbass compressore pedal which I am going to use at the same time as a multieffect pedal. My question is this.... would it be better to put it in before the other effect pedal or after it? I suspect it is basically personal preference but what do most people do? Im sure I remember reading a similar question that somebody asked and I cant find thread and I cant remember what the answer was so sorry if this has already been discussed. Cheers Colin

Geeeeepers!!! Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. So in summary amongst other amps a few people are suggesting a line 6 studio 110 and a few suggesting a rolland bass cube 30 which I had considered. I am thinking of getting a decent practice amp as I am fed up lifting my 2x12 up 28 stairs in the middle of the night after gigs etc etc. Can anybody suggest a nice amp for the house? Im wanting to get a used amp for maybe £150 max but hopefully a lot less. Any suggestions? Colin

I was second in line for that one. I just phoned too late. It was sold very quicky as you can imagine but the advert is still there.

If its any help when I started playing nearly 20 years ago I decided to use 3 fingers. I made up my own technique where I decided not to play 2 notes next to each other with the same finger. What ended up happening was that I used all 3 fingers in rotation. To put it in another way if numbered my fingers 1 to 3 then my notes would be played with finger 1 then 2 then 3 then 1 then 2 then 3 etc regardless of which string Im on and I still use this effectively. I dont even think about which finger Im going to use, it just happens and always works. I also use my thumb for slappy stuff. But as many people have said it takes practice but once you ve got it then youve got it. I think for the fastest playing then a pick is the best and easiest but I rarely use one unless I want a particular sound that comes from playing with a pick as I can get fast enough with my fingers.

Ahha I see that might be confusing. I ment the end of this year which would be 2011.
