There is a small, but finite, possibility that they thought replying to an email telling them Marmite smells of yeast might not be worth the effort? 🙂

Arthritis - effect of trapezoid removal on playing
Stub Mandrel replied to Stub Mandrel's topic in General Discussion
I use turmeric in my cooking a lot. I like to put a heaped teaspoon in with brown rice while it cooks. -
Possibly because these things are subjective.? I know my eyes see things at different colour temperatures due to some obscure difference. I am also sure my ears differ in their responses from each other. If my left and right sides don't agree on colour or sound, there has to be even more subjectivity between individuals.

Err... you can stand with one foot in Walsall and one in Sutton Coldfield. -
Arthritis - effect of trapezoid removal on playing
Stub Mandrel posted a topic in General Discussion
My bother and I both have arthritis in the base of our thumbs. He plays guitar. I use boswellia, a course of it gives me a few months clear of pain (just occasional discomfort) and the more I play the better it gets. I discovered teh Boswellia two years ago, and it hasn't been as bad as the day before I started with it since (like 24 hour toothache in my hands). My brother has just had his thumbs x-rayed and been given cortisol injections in both. They have said that in a few years he will need to have the trapezoid bones removed. I suspect I may follow him along this route in time (I'm eight years older and m my symptoms are essentially the same). Has anyone here had this done, and how did it affect your playing? -
Yes, but define best when 'best' is a subjective, aesthetic opinion? If I roll off my tone control, am I getting a 'deteriorated' sound or a different one? If I like a rounded 70s blues-rock sound, I might find changing to a low capacitance cable suddenly make everything too brash! What matters is understanding that cable choice makes a difference. There's a good example here: http://www.shootoutguitarcables.com/guitar-cables-explained/myths.html

I have a problem with E and A strings
Stub Mandrel replied to Kingmagen's topic in Repairs and Technical
Welcome to Basschat. How old are the strings? Have you got the tone control turned up? Plus the pickups get closer and closer to the mid-point of the string as you go up the frets, so the sound gets less 'rich' or 'bright'. This is especially noticeable with the neck pickup on two pickup basses. You could try boosting the treble a bit more on the amp. -
I found the biggest challenge getting decent hardware in small sizes for bass cases. Penn do excellent hardware for instrument cases. I used theirs to make this dog case: If you can get a tradepoint card, get your ply cut at B&Q.

What is the use to be able to vary the amount of capacitance of a cable when you know the lowest is the best ? May I suggest that the assumption that a cable which has the minimum impact on the signal is best is a fallacy? Everything in the signal chain from pickup to loudspeaker has an impact that colours the sound to a greater or lesser extent, although the effect of some may be imperceptible. Nothing is best, just different. That doesn't stop anyone having a preference.

Modest compression before overdrive can help stop the 'higher notes sound weedy' effect. -

Heavy Weather was an inspiration to me (along with School Days etc.) when I was trying and failing to become a prodigy in the early '90s. But musically Hejira knocks them out of the pitch.

Best thing I have is a huge 'crystal' you rub in your armpit after a wash, from Lush or Holland & Barrett or somewhere. Possibly alum? It works.

I'm already 'Stub Two-Stacks' 🙂 My priority is a mid-sized portable setup.

In the mid-70s it was a term of derision for many critics. This is why bands of the time didn't like the label. It was only towards the end of the decade that it came to be subsumed by the fans. I suspect it's all quite subtle and I would need to refresh my memory by reading loads of old MM, NME and Sounds and listening to old Friday Rock shows. Perhaps that's my retirement plan? -
This is one of the mid-80s basses. Quite early many of their guitars and basses had 'Arbor Series' added to the headstock. I think this was to differentiate with the more up market models, such as the headless 'licensed by Steinberger' basses.

On 'people who do Jaco better than Jaco', I'm reminded of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix. Much as I loved SRV's music, one was the innovator, the other was the imitator. It's the creation of a new paradigm in music which is the real achievement. Einstein conceptualised relativity, but others too it further - does that diminish Einstein's achievement? As for Jaco's mental illness and drug abuse issues; they are desperately sad but no doubt as intrinsic to his character and creativity as Van Gogh's, for example, and cannot be bignored to understand him in the round.

I have posted on the other thread as I had one of these from new, and my brother still has it. Definitely Cort Korea. In the late 80s Hohner had a reputation for excellent instruments are bargain prices, way above a lot of the crap around at the time. The strings don't originally go through the body.

About 1986 or 1987, delightful to play - my first bass guitar was one and my brother still has it. Varnish a bit thick, not the most amazing sound, but now I know a lot more about basses I'd say it's very well made.

On the sleeve notes of Space Ritual (1973) the band's crew are described as 'Heavy Metal Kids, no doubt a nod to Burroughs. -
