I  like having a 5er. Having two octaves in a hand full is a god send.

Admittedly it took a while to master but once you've got it moving round the fretboard seems so natural and obvious. 

I agree; it is less the low notes and more about reduced hand movement up and down the fretboard. Make sure it is a fiver with a good B and a good quality string.

Absolutely, depends what suits.  I prefer the timbre of notes on the thicker strings wherever I can so dropped 4 suits me fine, other people play six strings and never leave the first position!
