1. Roadworn Jazz has a thin neck as well - not as thin as the Ged, but still very slim. I had one very briefly - lovely bass, but I couldn't play it as it gave me serious forefinger pain due to the narrow neck!
2. The Howlin' Wolves - R'n'B trio, both covers and originals. Work in progress - www.reverbnation.com/thehowlinwolveskent
3. I know someone who was in his class at school!
4. It gets said a lot, but a J can emulate a P thump, but not vice versa.
5. Sorry - double post! Damn phone....! Please delete mods.
6. Interesting topic - looked at this myself. I think a sub gives you smartphone access?
7. It's hard, and it doesn't make you feel great! I was once booted from a band I was drumming in. By email! I immediately rang the other two to sort it out, neither would answer their phones to me. Did bump into the bassist sometime later - who put is as ' I didn't agree with it, but there's no point in both of us losing out, is there?' Funny thing is our drummer has just quit in current band. Quite lucky, as he was likely to be replaced soon. He's a constant moaner, nothing ever right. At last week's gig, he complained that I play too many notes, and it's doing what his right hand should do(????), and that's he's never played with anyone like me before! He's an example of someone that need/ed to go!
8. Played there myself. Nice place. Something's got to be done to stop these places closing like they are.
9. Good excuse to post this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIbGsfq92BE
10. Don't know if anybody's been following the updates, but Motorhead have today cancelled more dates due to Lemmy's health. Worrying times - there's a lot more about it here - http://www.blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=192006 Lem is one of the main reasons I picked up a bass in the first place - I really hope he's back up and running again soon. Get well soon Lemmy!
11. I too can feel where the OP is coming from. I think we all go through 'down' periods of playing. I feel at the mo I'm kind of forcing myself to play for a bit everyday, as I'm still in a gigging band. Some days I'm loving it, other days I want to throw it in the nearest ditch! We've got a few weeks off coming up - I'm going down to one bass - but I feel I've got to keep my hand in. But if this band finished any time soon, I'd certainly have a bit of time away. For me, music - and bass - has given me so much pleasure, but with band politics, it kind of brings you down, and I think kind of leads to a feeling of taking it out on the instrument, as if it kind of represents what gave you the problems, rather than the those around you..... .....well it makes kind of sense for me! .
12. Interesting stuff! I think I've found a safe haven at work so I won't be leaving it out in the car all morning....just the amp and cab! It's piece of mind - just got to remember to take it when I leave.....the building's locked until Monday....!
13. I'm going to try to get in into work - but I was worried it would be safer in the car!!
14. I do work somewhere pretty rural, and the car is fully tinted so you can't see in!
15.
Just as an aside to your point of view about covers and fenders Rob, have a watch of Glastonbury over the weekend, and play the bass spotting game. You'll probably come out with about 90% fenders, and no covers bands. Not all of them will be old duffers either, and none of them will be dead.
Very true DV. I was watching 'Later.....' the other week and every band featured a Fender bass!
16. Wasn't quite sure what to call this thread for fear of misleading! I've got a gig outside this Saturday. Played outside a lot before, so that's no problem. I've got to take a bass and amps to work and leave it in the car during the morning, and it's going to be quite warm. Obviously then play in the open, which is also hot (if the forecast is right!) I was just worried about leaving a bass in a hot car. Never would have bothered me a few years back, but a Luthier once told me about the damage humidity does to a bass - obviously affects the wood, and once it's cooled down, can muck the set-up right up (had one done last week before gig was called!) Am I being daft? Any truth in this? Should I get the bass out ASAP, or just leave it in and play the thing (which I used to do!) Any ideas?
17. Rickie Lee Jones' debut has got some great bass work....great album generally as well.
18. Maybe some do prefer 'other' basses (I prefer my x Jazz or x P)- but as many have mentioned so far, they are simply copies (impreoved or otherwise) of Fender's original! So arguably, from the fact that they are still the basses to copy - Fender did get it right!
19. I agree a good Fender is hard to beat. I love Rics, but when it comes to reliability and a good plug 'n' go, they are hard to beat. Millions of records can't be wrong!
20. Cool - thanks!
21. How do I get hold of him? Website/prices?
22. Seen some on EBay - about £12 for an aftermarket, and nearly £40 for a genuine Fender! Anyone got any experience? Are the aftermarket ones a lot of old rubbish? Best stick to the real ones? Any suggestions where to buy? Ideally looking for a tortoiseshell for USA Jazz - black, currently with white pickguard....needs to go!
23. I was at the '91 tour as well, with all the past members. Great show - they opened with a long 'Yours Is No Disgrace'! IMHO, love all the stuff up to, and including 'Drama'. After that...not really....but still a great live band I'm sure. Not so bothered about RW's absence, but a shame they can't patch things up with JA. But as has been said, you still get Squire, etc. - all great musicians to go and see, with a superb set of songs. 'Yes Album' and 'GFTO' - can't argue with that.
24. Ralphe Armstrong when he was in the Mahavishnu Orchestra - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtckEWfy2vE He is also prominent on 'Visions Of The Emerald Beyond' and 'Inner Worlds'. All three super albums. Ralphe has said it was one of the reasons he got the job - no-one was really playing fretless P!
25. DM also played on two of Carlos' finest solo albums - 'Oneness', and the the electric bass parts on 'The Swing Of Delight'. Acoustic bass was from Ron Carter. For any who haven't heard these two - fantastic records - and once again, some seriously tasty playing from DM.
