Can someone please point me at the place where the "never play open strings" sh*te comes from?

Do you ever have days where you pick up your instrument and everything that comes out just sounds like a big fart?
I had to put down the bass and ended just sat on the sofa drinking cider instead 🤔

From the description:
* This video is for beginner / intermediate bass players
* Obviously, there’s exception to all my tips (which are not rules!) but these tips should help you when playing with your band. Of course you can play open strings if you can mute them (which is a difficult technique to master if you’re a beginner), of course you can play fills that are well practiced, on time, from the bottom to the very top of your neck and so on.
* Always play the root - in the beginning of the bar - you can obviously play any chord tone / mode tone you want after. But not straight at the top. We establish the root and then venture out. Of course you can play inversions but that changes the chord, and you probably should make that decision with your band-members.
* I may have said ‘never’ and ‘always’ but this is really me just trying to make a point, don’t take it too literally fellas * This can be applied in many genres, but mostly for mainstream genres such as pop, folk, rock, funk etc. Yes, if you’re playing a progressive-jazz-fusion-hardcore-metal song this might not be the video for you.
* Here’s a 6 tip for the brave ones who read all of this - make music to be happier and have fun with other human beings. That’s the point of everything, including this video

I have an old Gallien Krueger Backline 110, but was thinking of upgrading to something a bit more suited to my style: funk/soul.
Can't fault the GK, but was looking for something of a similar size/wattage with a 'warmer' tone...
Suggestions?

Had to share again as I just can't get enough of these. Working on both basslines and guitar/chords at the moment...

Think yourself lucky - I’m getting ads telling me I need to send money to Sierra Leone
Well, how do you know you don't need to send money there? 😁

I like all the guys mentioned above. For non-bass material I've watched quite a few of Aimee Nolte's videos and they are pretty engaging.
One to check out who isn't on this thread yet is Adam Neely. https://www.youtube.com/user/havic5 - I'm always in danger of sitting there watching video after video. I enjoy the content, his way of explaining things and his balance between easy-to-understand theory and mind boggling detail!
Adam Neeley comes across as superbly arrogant... Or maybe that's just my take.

^^^ Washburn Hammerhead
Yep! Until a couple of months ago, it had been in a gig bag gathering dust for 15 years. No joke! It has the original strings on it 🤣
I bought it as a cheap bass to have around for recordings. Turns out, it's actually not a bad instrument at all. I really like the feel and playability of it.

Has he plugged in?
That he is me 😛
And, yes, I am plugged in, but it's a crappy phone recording.
It's quite audible on speakers/headphones, however.

...but not for the enormous leg?
Odd camera angles aside, it's listenable. Good work.
I always take any opportunity to show off the leg...
Apologies if you weren't prepared.
listenable? That's high praise 🤣

Apologies for the poor audio... And playing 😳

I just couldn't get myself out of the groove last night 😀
My fingertips are definitely getting a rest this evening... I had to resort to playing guitar 🙄
*gasp*

I so need to learn this bassline... Why is it that so much music from the 70s has such wonderful, melodic bass?
-
So far avoided any blisters, but after four hours jamming this evening, my fingers are hurty.
I've avoided them up to now by using liquid plaster on my fingertips (basically like applying a glue) but didn't do so this evening!
Finished of the session by jamming along to some Parliament...

Rock is not dead.
It just smells funny.

Bass-playing is definitely here to stay. I seem to get a great deal of pleasure out of it, seven weeks in, and I'm improving all the time. Kinda like being back at school, but at work instead, desperate to get home and plug in.
My guitar playing is taking a backseat, though 🤔
I've yet to do any recordings. There are few things that highlight weaknesses better than listening back on your own playing... Just need to get around to it. I may be brave enough to share 😶

New bands worth checking out in the neo-soul genre include Moonchild and Hiatus Kaiyote. In fact, Hiatus Kaiyote are probably my favourite band right now.
As unique as the Nai Palm may appear, I think I'm a bit in love with her.
Here are some tunes worth checking out:

Whilst I grew up listening to bands with the likes of Flea or Les Claypool on bass, it was Zender's work with Jamiroquai that really stood out for me. I almost picked up the bass, rather than guitar, because of him... Twenty years later, here I am 😂
Quite amazing to think he had only been playing for two years AND was still only 18 when Emergency on Planet Earth Came out... Now that's talent.
Been working on learning lots of his basslines the past couple of weeks. Currently on this:

Installed some on mine a few days back. I like the tone, although it may turn out to be a bit too mellow. No biggie, though.
However, the strings generally seem a bit more difficult to intonate and I'm getting a lot of rattle also.
Any tips on how to set these up properly? My knowledge of setting up basses is non-existent, so please bear with me 🤔
Danke.
