If you want a traditional 50s sound then a set of flatwound strings is what you need. Flats will last you many years (10 years plus) without needing to change them and the best bit is that they get better with age!

You can pick up a decent set of Status Hotwire flatwounds for less than £18. 😎

Where can you get the Status Hotwire Flatwounds from ? Google doesn't seem able to help, Status don't seem to list them except in short scale

  2. I picked this up on Monday after a nice drive there and back over Snowdonia, it used to be @Beedster's https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/262287-fs-squier-classic-vibe-50s-precision-sd-pup-us-circuit-sold/?tab=comments#comment-2776167, as we know Chris has great taste in basses, especially Ps

Previous owner hadn't used it a lot in the intervening period, hadn't cleaned it much if at all and I'm pretty certain it was wearing the same set of D'Addario strings that it had when sold last

I spent a bit of time yesterday and this morning giving it a thorough clean and spot levelling the 8th fret which was causing a buzz on the A and D strings and set it up with a fresh set of flatwound Maruszczyk strings and wow, it is lovely, the neck adjusted to really flat and action to 2mm and the response across the strings is very even and the tone is just what I've been looking for, that sound that was in my head, that I'd been approaching with '57 on P style basses but not actually quite getting. I'm genuinely surprised at how good it is, even more surprised that none of the 22 who were watching it bid for it, I guess for once being in Wales counted in my favour, usually the nice basses are a long drive away and collection only, or overpriced or deeply flawed if delivery is included. The blue one that was listed and finished this week sold for a good bit more, though maybe had a better pickup in it, but this Seymour Duncan 1/4 pounder is good.

It's really pretty without the scratchplate (included but no need to fit for me), 4 piece body really well done, I believe it is pine, anyway it is really nicely balanced, comfortable with the '54 contoured body, and the neck is just what you'd like from a P, 42mm nut and chunky enough, maybe not the fattest of the possible Fender profiles, single piece Maple with real rear fitted truss rod, and maybe there is something to be said for the tele shaped headstock in weight reduction which helps the balance

Bit of a punt with Ebay, 3 hour round trip but quiet Welsh roads and the sun was shining, and a bit of work to make it nice but very definitely worth it 😀

  3. relief of 0.3mm is 12 thou so that's a good starting point; so if your bridge saddles are towards the bottom of their adjustment and you can't lower the string height much more then an inch long strip of average business card at the butt of the neck joint will probably drop the action by a 1mm or so and a piece of .6mm veneer by maybe double that, you'll have to experiment. I have a piece of plasticard in one of my jazzes that is 0.46mm thick and it meant that I could raise my saddles back up so the adjusting screws weren't sticking up out of the saddles and jabbing my palm when I am trying to palm mute whilst keeping my string height at 2.5-2mm

I discovered these by accident quite recently and it was a proper "What the actual f#@k" moment. First of all I honestly can't believe that anyone is so narcissistic that they film themselves listening to a song and think anyone gives a flying rats donkey what their (usually staged) reaction is. Secondly why would anyone on the planet actually be interesting in watching it. Well, other than me obviously, but that was just because I had to watch two or three just to get my head around what was (or rather wasn't) going on. I mean Jesus H Mary mother of Santa. Is that really what passes for entertainment these days?

    Gogglebox

  5. I asked Adertons about asking Fender for a run of medium scale Ps, this was the reply,

Unfortunately we cannot control what Fender produces, as we just retail their products.

However, if you did want a medium scale P-Bass, this would be something that the custom shop could fulfil – unfortunately not at the middle price point!

so basically go Custom shop if you don't want standard

  6. Whenever Fender Japan do a batch of short or medium scale basses they seem to sell out pretty quickly, yet why do none of the dealers like Andertons, who are closely aligned with Fender and Gibson and who are able to spec models to their customers tastes, ask for a short run of medium scales for their exclusive use, I guess that they don't see enough demand from players asking, yet they see plenty/enough people who want a £4k telecaster relic in the style and with the tone of Pete's purple Tele. Maybe worth asking Lee if that's something they would consider doing, if anyone has his ear, maybe a group purchase ?

  7. That is lovely looking bass, I wish I could make use of it, but I'm realistic enough to stick with frets for the most part, glwts, I am sure it will not be here long at that price

  8. I contacted him through Ebay with the link to the one I bought, this is the reply

Hi thanks for your comments. I do admit I am not sure

now about this guitar but if it is what you say could you

give me an idea of the price I should be charging.

    Thank you.

I replied with some info and pointed out the £77 price I paid

Body on mine is solid wood but veneered, one piece on the front and book matched on the rear, no idea what the wood for the body is, the veneer makes it look like alder

  9. I think you'll find that Nordstrand didn't invent it, it's an old idea, they just decided to put it into production, at a price point they were happy with, and I'm sure they realised that people would copy it, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery after all, same as they and everyone else copy Fender's basic pickup design
