1.
who ever did the two lines on walk on the wild side
Good example. BTW:
The song is also noted for its twin interlocking bass lines played by Herbie Flowers on double bass and overdubbed fretless bass guitar. In an interview on BBC Radio 4 (Playing Second Fiddle, aired July 2005), Flowers claimed that the reason he came up with the twin bass line was that as a session musician he would be paid double for playing two instruments on the same track.
Still works though!!!! But I'm also hoping for examples where without a careful listen you might think that it's bass business as usual, but if you listen careful, there's subtle timing/phrasing/grace notes that really do something. I thought that some classic soul might have good examples. But when I listened carefully to the bass on Roberta Flack's version of "Killing Me Softly", I'm not sure that is the best possible bass line for that song. Although, looking up the track personnel, it's Ron Carter playing bass on that song, and he's a very, very, well respected bassist. So maybe I should re-listen and reconsider.
2. Can anyone recommend some examples where a bass player has come up with a quite simple, or understated, bass line, but where it really suits the song and is played very well? It doesn't have to be root notes only, but something that is simple, but where you can tell that someone really clever has played it, or perhaps where the phrasing and timing is really excellent and makes an otherwise simple line excellent.
3. Thanks for the info on your Cardinals. Interesting looking El Maya here. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/El-Maya-Ibanez-active-bass-made-in-Japan-1981-/271364720733?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item3f2e99085d
4.
Anything old is worth millions ? Where will it all end.
I've got some rocks that must be a few hundred million years old. I wonder if I can get big £££££ on ebay if I describe them as 'rare'.
5.
That was mine, before I realised you could sell on BC. Doh!
I don't know exactly how much the various flavours of Cardinals go for, but I hope you're happy with your sale. It looks a very nice instrument, and I'm sure the buyer is happy.
6. Given its incomplete state, and that it's partially collection only, this might go for an interesting price. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Infinity-6-String-Fretless-Bass-Guitar-/251421801912?hash=item3a89e83db8
7. Months later update: my timing and feel are improving, but it's a slow process.
8. Just wanted to mention that this project is still alive. I've had a gap while I think about PortAudio not working on the Pi. I'm going to convert to JACK, but it's waiting until I get enough time. In the meantime, I've decided that it will not have its 'own' hardware interface, but will be controlled by a (in theory any) external MIDI controller. I've purchased an Arduino MEGA board, ten effect box foot switches, an I2C LCD display, and some other bits and bobs ready to make the MIDI controller. I need some more wires and stuff, which I'm pickng up bit by bit from ebay. I think I've worked out where I'm going to get an aluminium box from, and how I'm going to drill all the necessary holes in it etc. I'm planning to have a low profile aluminium top screwed to a wooden base, with rubber feet. That will then connect through MIDI to the PI. But, I plan that the foot controller will be general enough to do other things as well. The looper still works on the mac, so I can develop and test MIDI control on that. After I've got some MIDI control, it's time to rewrite the looper to use JACK interface for audio.
9. I'm lowballing this one. Anyone who is a serious bidder, go ahead! http://www.ebay.co.u...utorefresh=true Edit: Someone bid £10.69 on it!!!! I'm amazed by quite how low some people's lowball bids are, but that was a different thread.
10.
True - but why are so many for sale?
It could be that compared to the number of basses in circulation, the proportion of them that is for sale is very small.
11. £50 starting bid, it'll find it's true market value. .
12. The word 'rare' appears to be slightly over-used on ebay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rare-Shine-6-string-bass-guitar-/321293263207?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item4ace922167
13. I think it's just supply and demand. There are an awful lot of basses out there. More new basses are being sold, and the ones already out there often are still around decades later, being sold and resold, cluttering up people's sofas and the like.
That said, there do seem to be an inordinate number of Fenders in the basses for sale section...
I think this can be explained by there being an inordinate number of Fenders out there.
14.
How do you know it's not a dealer/importer only catalogue?
I didn't, I was guessing. Given subsequent discussion, it being a catalogue intended for dealers would explain the unbranded instruments. I've gone through some later catalogues, and just a few years later in 1979 or so Cimar were releasing some much more distinctive and interesting instruments. And, they're branded in the catalogue. Edit: E.g. the Astra guitars here. http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary/expansion.php?cat_id=34&now=1 And the XR basses here are mostly traditional, but slightly distinctive, and IMHO looking good for it. http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary/expansion.php?cat_id=34&now=3 And the Stinger Jazz-ish bass here, http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary/expansion.php?cat_id=52&now=1
15.
Brilliant! Those photo's make me wanna buy it though, shows what decent photography can do for an advert.
While I'm unimpressed by the offer to put a name on the headstock and the price, those must be among the best listing photos that I've ever seen.
16. I was familiar with the concept of stencil brands, but I was very surprised to see the photos looking like that in the catalogue. Particularly the Ibanez catalogue. I assumed that the catalogues were aimed at consumers, rather than businesses. I'd guess they are dual purpose. At one point I was looking into buying an Antoria Les Paul, as they were cheaper than the equivalent Ibanez models. But, I never found the right one at the right price. As the owner of a Cimar bass, I was a bit disappointed to see them presented as a no-brand
17. I've never seen this before. There are unbranded basses floating around, but I've never seen a catalogue with them. Why would a company do that? http://www.ibanez.co...?cat_id=2&now=1
18. The seller of this Squier will apply the brand-name of the buyer's choice to the headstock if the buyer knows what the seller means. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-Squier-Jazz-Bass-Guitar-/251419568094?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item3a89c627de
19. These have been discussed here recently. There's a reasonable chance of a bargain here with the starting bid being low for what it is. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ibanez-SR760-made-in-japan-active-4-string-bass-/261368788224?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item3cdacb3500
20. In another one of his/her listings, he's selling a 'Fender' guitar for £45. It's a Sunn Mustang. This appears to be one of the later ones, not the early ones which are more desirable. Like the 'Hofner' s/he seems to want to emphasise the word Fender' in the listing title, and the unwary could be fooled if they don't look/research properly. http://www.ebay.co.u...=item1c3af7e456 Looking at the kind of thing she/he is selling, they suggest to me someone who should know what they are doing. http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Guitars-/3858/m.html?item=121248890132&pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item1c3aff3d14&_ssn=tantrumjohn&LH_Complete=1&rt=nc
21. It's back, and while it still says Hofner all over the place, the description does say that this isn't a real Hofner bass. Though, the seller tells us that 'it would fool anyone'. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Electric-Bass-Guitar-Violin-Hofner-Beatles-Sunburst-/121248890132?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item1c3aff3d14
22.
That's one of three of those Gibson EB type Kays on eBay at the moment. But there is a nice looking later model Kay bass on there as well: http://www.ebay.co.u...n-/121245668282
That is nice, and it's already at a quite healthy price after two bids. If it hasn't finished yet, there's also a Kay which is a very poor copy of a bass by a well known litigious American company as well.
23. There seem to be a number of not very nice looking Kay basses on ebay at the moment. E.g. this. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-KAY-Bass-GUITAR-/161190918422?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item2587ba3916 Now, where's that 'Do not want!' image when I need it?
24. Cardinal series bass with pickup replaced (visible routing), but has a hard case. Cheap starting price, pickup only, in Swaffham. I don't know where Swaffham is in relation to King's Lynn, but I wonder if this is one of those obscure locations where collection only items are attractive only to a limited pool of buyers. http://www.ebay.co.u...=item27dcee4519
25. Is that a Duesenberg Star Player bass? If so, do you have a separate thread on it, pictures, recordings? I can't pretend I'm likely to buy one, but the Duesenberg looks a very nice bass.
