You just know that somewhere there is a guitarist nodding his head and saying "now THATS how you play bass!"...

Actually, knowing guitarists like I do they're probably saying "puh, he's not as good as me..."

It seems that bass tutorials want us to go this way too. How many have you seen that teach you how to solo? How many tutorials have you seen that show you how to hold down the bottom end in a pop-rock song? And what do most of us actually do in our bands?

    Good shout.

  3. I saw an ad for an Ibanez Affirma and the seller demo's it in a video. I can't say I've ever heard bass playing like it...sounds like a free jazz improv..I don't like the tone...but cannot 'get' what he's up to/ thinking.
    Any thoughts gentlemen???

    Should be well worth watching.

I've seen him live a few times but this 1984 tour with Miroslav Vitous was a bit special. Two great bass players for the price of one!

I saw this at the Bracknell jazz festival in 1984.... blew my mind.
    2 of my favourite bassists.

  5. I plugged in my Marcus Miller sire jazz today..haven't played it in a while. Everything is fine except th blend control doesn't work. It only allows sound from the bridge pick up...turned all the way in the opposite direction just cuts out the sound...backing away in the other direction just brings the bridge pick up in. There is no noise from tapping on the pole pieces of the neck pick up. I had a peek under the control plate, and the leads from the neck pick up is hot so the pick seems to be fine...the batteries are fine as the active controls work..I even get a nice hum up to the preamp (following the leads from the neck pick up). I don't understand how this could happen just while it's been sitting on its stand.
    Any ideas anyone.
I've even tried squirting contact cleaner into the blend pot...no joy...it wasn't even crackling in the first place.
I'm beginning to suspect the preamp may be faulty.
The pick up btw doesn't even work in passive mode.

Sounds like a Schaller 232 Bassbucker. High output for sure! Maybe try it in parallel or with one coil shorted?

    It has a coil tap....and it's still huge sounding..I think you're right..it is a schaller 232...sounds great but..completely mental volume!

Not uncommon in PJ pickup combinations. If adjusting the heights worked you could just bring the volume of the Precision down to match the Jazz pup. Another route to take would be to replace the jazz pickup with a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder Jazz pickup. Believe me, that would cure the problem. Rarely even use my jazz pup except to just color the sound with a few more highs.

Thing is..it's not a pj combination. The humbucker is a large Schaller vintage humbucker..similar to the Di marzios of the 70s..kind of mud bucker -ish

  8. I've got a humbucker ( neck position) and single coil jazz up in the bridge position with a VVT passive configuration. The trouble is the volume of the humbucker is way louder than the jazz. Is there anyway of sorting this and keeping the bass passive..or do I just have to rely on turning the front pick up down to the volume of the back pick up?
