I've not really bothered with them since SW was booted out and then died. IMO he was integral to them, not just his vocals but his charisma too. Plenty of nice basswork to be found on all those first five albums.

Ha ha agreed, especially if they're sounding a bit Talking Heads ish..aka King Crimson's Discipline , not forgetting when they also went a bit dancefloor with Sleepless.

Contemplating seeing Pixies at the Hyde Park fest on 8 July, supporting Pearl Jam. While i still enjoy PJ's first three albums can't say I like most of the others. Not that bothered about the rest of the day's bill so £78 x 2 for one and a bit bands is a bit steep. Off for the friday at the Blue Dot fest a couple of weeks later. A lot of great science stuff goes on but music-wise I'm there for headliners Groove Armada. Got Spiritualized too so that's not bad.

I'm going pretty obscure here. Regular John Peel listeners and/or Liverpool residents in their teens -ish in the 80s might've come across these two sadly overlooked tunes. Used to have the 45s but now can only hear them on YT.

As with many music genres, film franchises etc etc IMO the hatred/dislike targeted at prog is probably less to do with the bands music rather than their, often rabid, fanbases. When groups of fanboys declare Rush/Tool etc are the greatest band ever and knock spots of everyone else that's what puts other people's backs up. It's fanboys on fora who keep harping on about things like these bands supreme technical prowess, use of complex time signatures blah blah. Diehard metalheads seem as bad.

I do like Entwhistle's right hand technique and as someone who prefers fingerstyle to using a pick I give him the nod.

The Clarkson association should be enough to put off anyone under 30 contemplating checking out DSOTM or Foxtrot

Sure thing. During the days of empire the British did a lot of wrong things but foisting Yes, ELP, Jethro Tull, Gong etc onto the world was a step too far

While I recognise these two players as big influences on bass playing I can't get past the small matter of the music being unutterably unlistenable

As a yoot, the 80s were my era and and this morning in the car I've been playing There's some piffle on it but also many gems of which this is one

Here's one of my fave tunes from one of my fave guitar bands, House of Love. By far the best band on Creation's roster (not you Oasis!!) and should've been at least as big as The Smiths. Unfortunately, drugs and infighting seem to have put the kybosh on that

Judging by the numbers of bellies I see hanging out below the hems of undersized T/Polo shirts and the tops of 'arrises peeking out over the tops of saggy jeans I'm not even sure they're too bothered about freezing to death. As long as the essentials are kept under wraps, that's all that probably matters

I disagree. Unless you put your basses away in a case after every use, they're going to be on view unplayed most of the time. I certainly wouldn't want these on view however, great they handle

I'm not a Led Zep fan but I know enough that the band refused to go on without John Bonham. Similarly I've a feeling the FF's will call it a day. TH was more than just the main drummer. He was a charismatic performer and TBH i don't know of anyone who could step into his shoes, the drummer role maybe but not the man himself.

I get you. I think the ubiquity of P basses has now made their looks bland compared to say a Stingray of Ricky. Some of my fave players are P bass players so I don't knock P basses. Just don't want one myself.

I have 4 FF albums which are mostly killer no filler esp the rock CD off In Your Honour, which is great start to end. However, think the Nirvana connection will always overshadow them. Mind you I far prefer them to the three English bands named.

When I say whim in the OP I mean I never even had the slightest intention of buying another bass. I didn't even go away to have a think. I just bought it like i was buying a pack of gum. Not quite the same as planning to buy one and choosing one that's a looker.

A big inspiration to me as a drummer and what a drummer he was. Few deaths of famous people impact on me but his has genuinely left me feeling saddened. Not just a drummer in the Foos but as much a frontman as Dave Grohl.

I've seen a few local bands playing their own material and pretty much the general response among pubgoers has been a mix of indifference and annoyance. The bands that followed them playing familiar but not too obvious covers went down a storm by contrast. Mind you, there are thousands of successful bands who've still yet to write actual songs.

I too am supposedly a rational, logical engineer, but I'm a sucker for good looks...in general! There sure are a lot of fugly basses and guitars out there. Even if they play beautifully, I still wouldn't even try one in a store. After all, as guitars/basses spend more time hanging on the wall than actually being played it makes sense to have the nice lookers.

I have, yesterday.😁. I already have three other basses, having sold four in the last 18 months. I'd only gone into the store to get some strings but it just looked so inviting I couldn't resist it. As I already have a Ray 4 single humbucker model I didn't even bother trying it out in the shop. Luckily it's great. Nice low action with no fret buzz and a great tone with the double humbuckers.
