    G&L

Lots of great choices in G&L. Just returned from 25 years living in USA - NYC, Miami, Seattle principally. Became an admirer and collector of G&L early on and have owned multiple L2000 and L1000, plus SB2, JB2, Legacy Bass and LB100, Lynx and more. Still have an 80s SB2 with the Jazz pickup replaced by an El Toro pickup. Many people have commented on the limitations of having a bass with 2 volumes and no tone. IMO, SB-2 has infinite tone possibilities and is the ultimate 'cut through the mix' instrument. Have a newer L2k in Empress wood. Others have commented on the complexity of the interaction of 3 knobs and 3 switches resulting in a plethora of tonal shades. It takes time to learn but it's well worth the investment. The Empress wood makes the bass super light which contrasts with some of the 13+lb early 80s models I have owned but the depth of tone of those early ones seemed to accord with the heft. Anyway, rambling a bit now! There are a number of G&L experts on Talkbass and some good specialist dealers. Can't mention here but PM if interested. Glad to see basschat interest in USA G&L models - great company with amazing and different basses.
  2. AER is the aspirational answer but at €1500-2000 not practical EICH do a nice 112 combo but more cash than another !Markbass 121p different sound though The TC and Ashdown options IMO are Inferior to MB The fender rumble series might have something for you. They are light, cheap and well reviewed but the 500watt 2x10" looks like the only contender for your needs. There is an interesting Polish combo at around 500 euros - "hand box"??????? Someone else will fill you in. Good head and good cab hard to beat - Aguilar, mesa, TC. Barefaced cab or Bergantino etc etc. however, great combo I would like. The 121p is just so hard to beat! Good luck and if you find something amazing - let us know!

  4. I currently have a blue 5 string and it is magnificent. Interesting to note that Peavey's top of the line Cirrus ended up with the Millennium preamp as most players preferred it. Had a white 4 string and let it go - very foolish. Balanced well, played great and recorded magnificently. In addition, when I lived in the USA, I owned a Sarzo and a Cirrus and a T-40 - all of them just great. If I recall, the Millennium is a 35" scale. Peavey USA offerings are all excellent but their value is affected IMO by the plethora of cheap basses they produce and lack of endorsers and players. If you check the used section at Guitar Centre, they usually have a few USA and prices are going UP!
