  1. Price includes UK post.

Used at home a couple of times only.....I can't find the box will have another look (in the dreaded garage!).

    Here is TC's blurb

DARK MATTER is the kind of pedal that you wanna go play for half an hour and end up spending half a day with. It’s musical, covers a super-wide range of sounds

but stays true to its base, an all analog-drive circuit that reminisces plexi sounds with both a classic and modern edge.

DARK MATTER delivers in spades thanks to a very low compression and a lively response that reacts to your playing at every turn.

        •    Vintage-voiced distortion with extreme dynamic range
        •    2 band EQ
        •    Voicing switch

  2. SOLD .

    Now £40

Tribal Planet case, the semi hard shell case type, I can’t remember using this but it has somehow sustained superfluous damage with one half broken zipper tag and the inner patch where the bridge situates I’ve found is torn…..I’m wondering if I lent it out some time ago and never checked it on return. All in all it’s in very good condition. I don’t think these are made anymore.

You can collect from me or sort postage (from your end) and I’ll send weight and sizes….I can then take the case packaged if needed to a local drop off place like Parcel Force/Evri/UPS in my area….I don’t know what post cost would be so message me if you are interested.

  3. I’ve just completed buying an amp off Chris and very easy it was too. He answered messages very quickly and was great to deal with in all aspects of the dealings and my arrangement for collection from him. Cheers Chris.

I remember Direct Line saying the exact same thing to me back in the late '80s!!

The only decent reply I can think of to such a stupid statement would be to say that the only reason Mick Jagger would be in any of our cars these days, would be that we're dropping him off at the local Day Care centre...

I had that (almost) exact same reason given by Prudential many years ago “the reason we won’t insure you as a musician is you might be driving Boy George and have an accident etc etc “ it’s all codswallop.

  5. It’s tough finding an insurer…(the Musicians Union will have a company they use if you can find out?)
l left my broker after many years as he was getting some silly prices each year to the point where I’d had enough. My wife, being a teacher had her Teachers Union advising use of Aviva. We insured her car as the first and me, as a musician as the second and it was accepted and was half the price of the old broker cost.

    Look at www.musicguard.co.uk

Also if you are in or join the Musicians Union you can get free insurance to £2000.

I’ve usually got through on phone okay but I seem to remember the lady who answered asked me to send an email with the info/details of work.

I’ve come across a few companies that are currently putting out this ‘difficult to address business is not as usual’ attitude so we have to hang in there best as possible……..good luck but check what they may require to do and the cost.

    Hi All,

Has any one had any bad experience on "commission sale" in which the instrument was sold but the shop kept postponing payment to you?

I sold a high end trumpet, on commission, with a shop but now the guy keeps finding excuses in making the bank transfer payment to me. Any suggestions folks?

Visit the shop again, face to face can work.

Yup, many years ago with Andy's Music (aka Andy's Guitars / Andy's Drums) on Denmark Street.

Tried the court route but I was a long way down the list of his creditors.

He filed for bankruptcy but still managed to keep his Rolls Royce.

Terrible shop, they used to use super glue to repair acoustic guitars!

As to the issue, Real Electronics in Sheffield are the Mark Bass appointed repair agents. However, they don’t do component level repairs - if there is a fault they’ll swap out the board, which makes it expensive if out of warranty.

I had a fairly unsatisfactorily experience with them - I had a intermittent fault with my CMD121P, sent it to them, they said there was nothing wrong, replaced all the pots, charged me £125, and then the fault came right back again.

I ended up buying a second hand Little Mark 3 and replacing the head with that.

Did they say why they were replacing the pots if there was no apparent fault, without informing you first?

  10. If not already stated…….PLi is a good cover but the person(s) contracting you/us should also have it in place methinks. A bit like a recent gig when our band was asked to have Pat test certificates on our gear, my response was ‘as long as the client has everything Pat tested too’.

I have one of those cabinets and, although I know what that control is supposed to do, I can't hear any difference in the sound when I change the setting.  It may be my cloth ears, that it's only effective when the rest of the band is in full flow, or that I'm too close.

Try using as much treble as possible off the bass and a bit more than usual on the amp, then ‘scrape’ with you nails along a string nearer the bridge area and use the cab control to see if there is any difference … if not then I’d check the connection to the tweeter/horn hasn’t fallen off inside the cab, taking off one of the carry handles if possible because they do drop off sometimes!

Val and Richard? I used to see them all the time at The Cartoon and Windsor Castle (especially during the Chris & Harry era) and supported them at The Riga IIRC. Great band, nice gig you have there.

Yes Val and Richard and for a while now with me and various drummers.

  13. Anyone catch Jess Hayes with her band in the Kashmir stage? I recorded her EP last year, Jess is a mighty fine singer/songwriter in the rock stream of music following her mum and dad's footsteps... who have a band 'Bad Influence' that I work in.

  14. I'm not fully aware why the original Fender pups were placed in that original position, whether 'scientific' exploration or simply experimenting with different sounds from different placement along the body.

On my self build I generally unless requested, prefer a closer positioning of jazz pickups than Fender and slightly closer to the foot of the bridge. I also bring the P pickup closer to the bridge. Look at Dingwall model with 3 pickups, looks a little overkill but it likely gets all of the Fender type pickup areas covered. The further forward/towards the neck the pickup is, the less 'attack/tightness' string sound is detected whereas nearer the bridge more attack but less 'body', hence two pickups (or 3!) better than one. I also sometimes angle my jazz pups so theres another different look to consider eh?

  15. Any shim will change the angle and Fender bass owners used to stick a piece of 'lollipop' stick in the neck pocket to raise the neck a little and help with the string height/action/playability.

Shims of various thickness can be bought online (Ebay or Stewmac USA). Or....if the look doesn't bother you, route or drill out a channel in the body (and pickguard) to facilitate access to the truss rod.

Heaps better than unscrewing the neck all the time.

  16. What reason? Play which is easiest. In the classical world it may be deemed ‘inappropriate’ to play both bows due to possible ingrained old ‘rules of the orchestra’. I’ve not played my DB for many years. I suffered the frustration of (trying) to use the French style smaller frog bow. I bought a cheapo German one recently but haven’t attempted it yet. It’s interesting how you found reverting to the German one made that piece of music easier to play. However, there is also the question of how much rosin on the bow is the ideal and possibly which make of rosin is best for your bow, style, strings, bass. Good luck.

They are not that thick. Re-carving to be flatter would mean making the centre of it really thin, possibly to the point of it breaking down the centre.

The more I look at it, the more it looks like a 7.25 inch radius board (as per old Fenders) that has just been cut with an extension / extra length.

I don't see why it would be a waste. There are other extra long 'board basses out there. The Ibanez Portamento and the Zon Hyperbass just as 2 examples at opposite ends of the money spectrum.

I did take my bass back to Neville Whitehead a couple of times to have the radius/ curvature flattened out, it was too much for an electric bass. Unfortunately, that refit and subsequent ‘invetsigations’ into bass guitar led me into design and building basses, much nail biting, cursing and happiness has ensued!
