Don’t know how he got so famous when all his alleged work was actually played by carol kaye …😉🍿

From what I’ve read over the years, some of these bassists where in the right place at the right time and made the right notes and feel work….they also did so many sessions, either per week or per day, that who played on what became a little ‘foggy’ as not all sessions were completely catalogued.

I was never planning to do it as I really think it's a bad idea. Just had never heard of it and wanted to know what others thought. It seems the vast majoirty think it's a very bad idea.

Ernie Ball relented and sent me a set of strings. I didn't want cobalts again even though they sound so good. I've used them in the past without any issue, just this set. I may try them again down the road. Have to say though Ernie Ball UK, once they said they'd send a set, had them here the very next day.

Good news for the new set and service from Ernie Ball..

  3. Maybe try micro mesh…..(hope this pastes up) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/333641208471?hash=item4dae90d297:g:JBkAAOSwMmBVwRtd

These sheets can be bought separately or as a ‘set, starting at 1500 ‘grit’. Used for polishing up wood after final sand paper use and before oiling. This 1500 sheet is not sand paper as such so there shouldn’t be any residue problem, unlike steel wool that will break off and small bits will go everywhere if you aren’t careful and gather around the magnetic pickups….strange idea that but I guess the ‘techs’ meant for you to take the strings off.

I say send the strings back to them for an exchange. I did this with D’Addario, on their request, many years ago when they introduced half wounds strings and about the third set I used was ‘dead’ on arrival. I did the usual wash with surgical spirit on a cloth and tons of mini filings came off the strings. They simply hadn’t been washed off at the factory after being ground down.

  4. EBay initiated their global post service a few years ago, fairly unannounced which at the time had me and my buyer caught off guard as they lost the parcel somewhere in their new midlands warehouse but..... I got to keep my money and the seller was reimbursed and someone got a free MarkBass LMK! The whole courier business has altered it seems in recent times and I’ve had a 50% success rate of my full wine and beer deliveries coming through in one delivery, not over a few days after I’ve contacted the supplier who have twice said ‘courier problems’.

  5. You paid for post/ courier and the seller gave it over to someone at the door...hmmmmm?  I assumed you’ve checked the sellers feedback on previous stuff.....next to try and find the phone number ( damned difficult) for an EBay operator and go through the whole thing.....this may help them to track or trace any unusual correspondence to and from this seller.......sorry to hear about this ordeal and loss of the cab, total let down for you. Could it be that Ebay just ‘may’ reimburse you if proved their system was at fault.....not a great way to spend Sunday! Good luck.

  6. I was advised many years ago by a double bass builder/repairer to use ‘bore oil’ for my maccasar ebony f/b, an oil I still use today. I may use it once or twice a year. I buy Yamaha Bore oil, dab some on a cloth and apply and wipe off any excess.

Once on tour I asked the hired German guitar tech to simply wipe clean my bass with a dry cloth. He ignored both me and the guitarist and ‘cleaned’ our guitars every night with the new wonder called Lemon Oil. It saturated the boards, softened the graphite nut on the strat allowing the strings to literally melt into it, leaked over to the bridge s via the strings and this idiot was adamant that it was okay! I have to say that it’s been a good advertising campaign getting players to believe that Lemon oil is ‘the business’!

  7. Difficult to tell from your pic where the split is.....does it follow the wood grain direction or where there is an obvious glue joint of wood. I would take the machine off anyway and see if it’s just the small screw ( that holds it in place so it won’t swivel about) that is causing a slight surface crack or if the crack is deeper and emanating from the tuner post.

The 'thump' comes from the power supply turn on and power amp so turning the gain / vol down doesn't really affect that. But it will stop noises when plugging / unplugging bass of fx chain into the preamp input.

You will probably get a 'noise' if you plug the speaker jack (?) in as well as there is no existing 'Ground' connection and with a jack connection (as opposed to eg a Speakon) there is a sequence of connection as the plug is inserted.

HiFi amps often implement 'anti-thump' by waiting a few seconds after turn on (when the psu has stabilised) then switching the 'live' speaker signal via relay - the 'Ground/Black' signal is already connected.

Other circuit techniques are based around controlling the rise time of the voltage rails to avoid fast transients.

I forgot about that delayed / anti thump' switch, my Markbass has this, it takes a few seconds before the volume actually kicks in.....More expensive amps maybe?

I don’t think it’s a well built instrument.....can’t remember exactly but I think there was always noises here and there that could be addressed. This one appears to come from the tuning machines or pegs and it’s persistent. I’ve tried everything except disassemble the tuners....this might make it worse

I guess there could be a wooden tuner peg that has worn a bit thinner than the hole it sits through.....possible to extract it and (get someone else to) glue a thin veneer around it....good luck.

  10. If this noise wasn’t heard with the old f/b then the bass may still be settling in with this new one....the tuners may be vibrating in ‘sympathy’ with one of the strings not quite sitting in the nut comfortably .....but if this is a ‘new’ noise then another setup may be needed?
