1.
Im really into my soul house music.. especially Masters at Work..Gene Perez is the master at this ... a good ole standard jazz bass hes playing on this cut.. check out his playing.. its SUPERB!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nc8aCFWjdDk
I love MAW stuff,.. but in truth I never realised how many of the tracks he may have done. Listening back to some of my faves again, same tone, same groove. Awesome stuff. Good shout Bubinga5 ! Simple line in "To be in Love/MAW/India" ... very cool.
2. "Pino's playing on this track just blows me away.. im in awe of that man...his note choices make the rest of the music sound so good....what GoWest must have thought, when he laid down this bassline??" Hey Bubbinga5 I'm lovin' the Pino thing...BUT ...have you seen this early version of Graham Edwards on bass for Go West on THE TUBE back in the day. Awesome tone and technique ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mMoeWkDhqA Love it !
3.
Firstly with levels - Active basses GENERALLY have a higher output. It's a simple case of setting the input gain to the right level for whatever you're plugging in. Re Active circuitry: Lots of circuits allow you to adjust the frequencies you boost or cut via a 'sweep' knob on the body or trim pots within the cavity. You then bring the circuit (pre amp) in when you boost those frequencies. With Passive; the 'Tone' knob set to it's full position is the open sound of the Pickups. As you wind that back you're basically knocking down the pickup tone depending on what capacitor is governing the tone pot. I really love passive sound. Active is the pickups, going through a pre amp in the bass then out into the amp. There are only a few really useful pre amps out there in my opinion. Both really do have their pros and cons. It's purely personal. Which Celinder are you looking at btw? I've heard great things about his passive 'classic' basses..
Hi Fingerz I have a great active bass (the NYC Sadowsky with VTC has all the boost that I need) , and my attraction to the Celinder was purely physical rather than me needing a passive alternative. I know that there are combinations of passive PUPs/Active Circuitry and visa-versa in many basses, but never having had a passive bass (of any quality), a good deal of research seemed like a bright idea, considering the depth of experience on here too. I've looked at J-Update 4's in the past and considered that using one side-by-side with the Sadowsky may offer me little contrast, so I was looking for a classic looking bass, modern twist, great rep. Passive Precision-4 is what I'm looking at at the minute, with their own PUPs on board.. Frustratingly very little info on Celinders out there that I can find too... May come to nothing , but GAS is a terrible thing !
4.
Its not a dumb question at all... Most passive basses will have a lower out out depending on the wind of the pickups... Different preamps will do different things to the tone... depending on what you like...an Audere i have heard is very transparent... i take from your Q, you want a passive bass with a bit more oomph.... i have the perfect solution... i had a Custom Shop jazz... i added a Redeemer circuit.. it was just amazing... it did not colour the tone whatsoever, but everything was boosted in the best way... it was just like my jazz bass but the lows were boosted, the mids were boosted, and the highs were boosted... it also added an amazing clarity to the bass...im not talking harshness, im talking sparkle all across the tone range... turned my jazz into something very amazing... it was that good!...in fact i still have it handy when i took it out of the Fender... look them up on bass direct... http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...s_Redeemer.html
Bubinga5, yeh... that's the stuff. I'll check it out... The thing I have my eye on is a Celinder, so I'm not expecting it to be completely lifeless. I suppose I'm still confused why a bass (such as your Custom Shop Jazz) benefited so much tonally by adding the redeemer which is not technically a pre-amp. Why don't they just fit things like this at the factory ? Is it cost ? Or is there something about the passive un-boosted signal that appeals to the purists out there ? That's exactly what I'm looking for, a passive with oomph... (or is that technically an active bass ?) Am I also right in thinking that only active circuitry allows you to boost certain frequencies on the EQ , but passive only allows you to cut the treble/HF ?
5.
A lot of amps have a Passive/Active switch, to compensate for the difference in output from different Basses. I use a Peavey that has an in/out type, (same input) and an old Trace-Elliot that has Input 1 for Passive and Input 2 for Active. Just look at the Specs of whichever amp you're using, (or thinking of using) and it should tell you the options.
Cheers for that.. It was less the issue of balancing the gain when using both active and passive basses, but more the issue of any advantages of passive bass over an active basses . I presume none then ? Simply the active ones have increased signal output over passive. I guess different passive basses will have slightly different outputs to each other, and their tonal variation will naturally differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. Ta.
6. I'm gonna ask what may seem like a really dumb question to some of you. As far back as I can remember (at least as far back to when I didn't really care), I've always used active basses,..Warwicks, Rays, Sadowsky, etc, but I have a hankering for a particular passive bass at the moment. Relatively new, but still passive. Thing is, I suspect the output of the bass could be lower, but should I consider using a outboard pre-amp to boost the signal, or do many of you use passive basses without any enhancement ? Will a pre-amp alter the tone of the bass , and if so is it therefore defeating the object ? Is it a simple case of adjusting the gain on the main amp to suit the lower signal ? If active electronics are "commonplace" in many boutique basses, what are the advantages (if any) of passive electronics. .. yeh, yeh.... dumb ass. I know.
7. What a beauty ! I know this is a long shot , but does anyone know who actually owns this now ? Basschatter or not ? A Celinder is at the VERY TOP of my wish list, and has been for some time. (I have a secret stash ready for such a purchase....)
8. Same thing here. Had all the e-mails, and the cancellations too. I decided to give them a wide berth last week after they failed to respond to my e-mail or phone calls to confirm who they were and where they had got my details. +1 on all the above, if they can't get this together what are they gonna be like if they actually have to arrange a gig? ..... but Lord above, I did laugh my arse off when I read the e-mail from Will , "thanking" them for letting him be a part of the audition process...
9. Blimey... I was only talking(laughing) about this the other day. As a schoolie in the early 80's I had to make do with an old H&H guitar amp with a reverb unit sat in the bottom... To get my first BASS rig I drove miles to get to get two 4 x 12 ORANGE cabinets and a head to match (in my vain attempts to emulate Bruce Foxton) back in the mid-late 80's . I remember going at them with vanish soap , because they'd been stored in a barn and weren't "orange" enough... The head set on fire and the cabs were quickly sold soon after. As if that wasn't heavy enough.. it was followed by a HH Bass machine head with an 8 x 10 cab. I put it down to maturity now that BIG isn't always beautiful Now, I cart around two Aguilar 2 x 10 cabs and a Thunderfunk head. Much easier on an old mans back. Daz
10. Hi all, I have for sale an incomplete collection of early BASSIST magazines, BASS GUITAR MAGAZINE, and the US BASS PLAYER. There's 53 of the UK one's dating from the 1995 to present day, and 14 of the US magazine spanning between Dec 06- January 08. All are in great Condition, (if not immaculate). They're £1.50 each + postage, or if you fancy the lot, you can have 'em for £40.00 + postage. Combined they do weigh a bit , but I travel around so maybe we could meet if anyone's interested in taking the lot. The early ones are full of transcriptions and useful stuff (if not a little dated) but still a good read! Daz
11. I'm sat here thinking; "I WANT IT !!" Little voice on left shoulder saying... "BUT YOU DON'T NEED IT !!" I reply "WHAT THE **** THAT GOT TO DO WITH IT !!"............... Sheeesh !, that's one purdy looking bass flippyfloop, I have funds for this and would be mighty interested, just need to work out a plan to smuggle it in the house and disguise it as furniture until she no longer suspects I'm fuelling my GAS problem again.... (I am the man in this house.... honestly ) Would you drop me a line when you post this for Sale, if of course you decide to do so.
12.
I wouldnt get either basses, they are just 'parts' basses, sadowsky just screws the body and the neck plus hardware together. the parts come completely made and finished from places like Warmoth and Guitar Parts, so its a question of screwing a neck onto a body plus some fret work. Many will argue that he sets it up like a magician but you're paying 1000 dollars for the parts and 2000 dollars for the setup. Id rather pay 3000 dollars to Celinder or Sei to build me something by hand. Just my Opinion by the way.
mmm , not sure about this Yamaha-bass. Having been to Brooklyn, and been able pick out various bits of 'wood' for the body, fingerboard and facing veneers , I have to say your 'catalogue parts' bass seems a little off the mark. The pick-ups and electronics are their own, so there's not a lot left. Sure, they may outsource, tuning pegs, and some of the hardware, but I would suggest that there's a lot more of the Sadowsky (NYC basses anyway) that are made in situ. Where did you get your info from? I know the Metro series are a little cheaper and made in Japan but .......??
13.
They have some on Amazon.com at a much better price, they also tend to pop up on ebay. The older copy doesn't have tab in (The version I used), but the new version does. More importantly, you can order it directly from Tony at slapit.com (as he now self publishes) at that site for $31 including postage.
Just what I wanted to hear Mikey-D Champion! I'm on the case, I need to get me one of these Thanks Daz
14.
The only resource you need is the Tony Oppenheim book and audio disc. As far as I'm concerned it is still the best out there (And I've checked out every single one to my knowledge). Yes if doesn't cover double thumbing ala Wooten, but to be honest, you probably won't use it anyway. Slap It!
Hey Mikey D Followed your link and looked/listened and there's some funky stuff going on there ! I need to get me some o' that !! ( typed "SLAP IT" into Amazon and it came back with 1 used @ £105.00 !! What gives ?) Is this book a real rarity ? (methinks I could acquire a Harry Potter first edition for less ) Any Ideas where to get one at a reasonable ££ ?? ........ off to the Bay next) Anyway my two-penerth regarding DVDs..... I cut my teeth on Alexis Sklarevski 'VHS' (now converted to DVD worry not), and its good. Not great ,...good. It gets you slapping, but it does appear dated now. Daz
15. The Mp3 version has a rechargeable cell inside which takes charge directly from your PC/laptop via a USB cable provided. A fully charged unit lasts me 6-7 hours constant use....about the same as an iPod The Tascam doesn't come with an AC/mains cord, but one can be bought as an add-on. Dazz
16. Hi Absolute-Beginner, Santa brought me the Mp3 version of the Tascam bass trainer this Christmas, and I have to say I've found it great , from playing along to the metronome, to slowing down difficult passages to learn, with the loop function and FX its almost made my little practice amp redundant. If you're having trouble converting Mp3s from WMA (which can be done relatively easily with the right freebie software on your Window OS) as an alternative why don't you download a free version of iTunes for Windows ? When you import CDs or your current WMA files , set the iTunes import setttings to MP3. There's even a function to convert all (or a selected number) of your files to Mp3 format in one click.... When this is done, just 'drag and drop' your chosen file from your iTunes library into the Tascam 'Music' folder and an Mp3 copy will appear. I'm a MAC user so iTunes has become my player of choice,...... If you decide to go down this route and you need some help ,then shout up!!. This is not a opportunist plug, but I currently have 2 of these units. Duplicate xmas presents! One unopened, fresh in the box.I was planning to advertise this on this site in the next week or so(when I get the time) but If you want to grab yourself a bargain, and you fancy the Tascam Mp3 bass trainer, send me a PM. 17.
I'm afraid I'd have to disagree. It's a stunningly beautiful bass, very lovely indeed. Nicest SAD I've seen methinks.
Thanks GreeneKing .. that's very nice of you to say so. I like it too. The depth of the quilt is amazing in some lights. 7 String "That's a very cool bass. Kinda pimped retro.. that quilt is nicely subtle..." Thanks for that too...... I like the thought of Pimped Retro. (I should've stipulated that on my order to Sadowsky......nice ) Dazz
18. Darn It My camera skills stink guys ! ......but you get the general idea. I'm gonna take some pics when the sun comes up and post 'em in the Porn section , the crappy lighting at this time of day makes it look orange. My latest arrival !
19. I too had previously tried various Jazz basses and found the string spacing , body size and general look a bit retro at the time and stayed true to my Warwicks and Spectors. I know this is all opinion and everyone will have comments to make, but I found the Sadowsky's lighter, smaller (7/8ths full size I think?) and very easy to handle considering I was used to the figure-hugging, small-bodied Warwicks and the like. The Sadowsky tone was, and has been for me superior to the basses I'd played previously and offers the retro sound with the Vintage Tone Control, but has the mid range growl and punch that the Warwick has too. Each to their own I suppose, and I intend to continue trying basses to make comparisons until I find something that impresses me more (but it has to be said, Its going to take one hell of a bass to make me put down the Sadowsky!!)
20. The day it arrived, I wanted to get the Pics up. That was 3 months ago. Very shabby performance by me I'm afraid I'll have these up by tomorrow. For sure. It's rehearsal time for me now, so everything has to be in the car in the next 10 mins !! Gotto go.
21. You're absolutely right !... Its high time I took some pictures of my Sad' and shared them with the rest of you. It really is Pornographic IMHO Stand by yer beds boys and girls. (now where's that bl**dy camera ??? )
Any chance of a nice picture of this lovely sounding beast please?
22. Hi Planethead, Just thought I'd let you know about my Sadowsky experience. I try and get over to New York once a year, and after dragging the missus around all the Bass Boutiques of Manahatten last January, we got a yellow cab over the bridge to Brooklyn to the Sadowsky workshop. We were warmly welcomed by the Roger Sadowsky and his dog, offered a drink and ushered into their 'sound room' where we encouraged to play everything and anything for as long as I wanted ! I left Brooklyn without making any hasty decisions about facing woods, fingerboard etc, but was back in touch with them as soon as I got home. Kevin Drexler is their Sales guy out there and was very attentive and couldn't help enough. Although they are a well respected brand I got the feeling they were genuinely interested in making sure I got exactly what I wanted, and were very precise in clearing up any concerns I had. Kevin obliged me by e-mailing pictures of the woods he'd selected for me, and this kept me from chewing off my fingers whilst waiting for the bass to be built. I had regular updates from Kevin every month telling me what his team were up to with my plank of wood.... $Deposit was minimal, with payment on completion and with the $ currently poor against the £ its a good time to buy ( if you have GAS its always a good time to by ) The build took a good 6 months, was shipped using fedex and arrived safe and well last October-ish. At first glance, the bass is a classy looking jazz... but once you get to play one, the bass is second to none that I've played IMHO, from the finish , the balance, the tone, the whole bag. I have played various Warwick's (Thumb basses mainly) for the best part of the last 10 years, and couldn't imagine something surpassing these by such a margin bit they do! I ended up having a 4 string Jazz, with swamp ash body, faced with AAA quilted maple, '59 Burst, Ebony fingerboard, abolone dots, D-tuner, VTC (std). Pricey, but worth the wait and worth the brass!! If you need any more info or any more of my heavily biased opinion....shout up ! Dazz
