2. I think you're right ! This happened to me too. I was proud to say that in years gone by, I was 'deaf' to all but the bass melody. Paid no attention to lyrics, could bypass all the complicated keyboard stuff and nasally g***ar, and it was just like listening to a backing track for Drums and Bass...... even the L-O-W notes from a fiver came through with clarity. I had a year or two off (long story and dreadful idea), and I too found that it was difficult to isolate the good stuff. Its just about come back now, but I've found a good set of headphones has helped too. I really do think its something that improves with prolonged listening and playing ,and yours ears can be 're-booted' in time....

6. The times I've looked at this! Tempted, but Christmas is so expensive. Have a BUMP on me! As much as I want this, this needs a good home. Beee-autifull!!
7. Chaps, Thanks for the advice. As much as I am looking forward to using the BT, I can honestly say that I can't foresee it being a 100% substitute for a practice amp at home. I envisage hitting the 'Bay for xmas rejects in the new year for a quality single speaker practice amp 'just in case'.... as you say...."Best of Both Worlds" and you can never have enough speakers and wood in the house .....Am I right ? Daz (anything on offer?...... need to put an add in the WANTED section methinks)
8.
If you're going to go with a bass trainer (good choice) make sure that you factor in a good pair of closed headphones too. They make a world of difference.
I think I've dropped enough MP3/Tascam "hints" at home that the long suffering other-half should be discussing its impending delivery with Santa ! Funny you should mention the headphone thing, I was xmas shopping today (!) and tried on some Bose cans and they were the biz. I've always used the in-ear phones to maximize the bass output into my noggin' but these were impressive and I could imagine being able to wear them for long periods of time. The in-ear headphones tend to get a little uncomfortable after a while. Peted....out of interest, when you say "closed headphones", do you mean noise-cancelling or in-ear ? Thanks again chaps! (I can see me being particularly anti-social on Xmas day, headphones on, bass plugged in......... sound good !)
9. Thanks Chaps, Its seems that everyone I have spoken to since my original post agrees with you guys. The BT appears to be an ideal tool for home rehearsal. I have a 'wheezy' little combo at home which needs be introduced to the wheelie-bin at sometime in the future ,as it does no justice to the tone of my bass ,and depresses me as I try to squeeze something half-decent out of the damn thing. So, until I have a little more dosh to play with, its the Bass Trainer for me, as it seems to tick all the boxes for rehearsing without having a speaker, amp and PC in the room at the same time. All that remains is to pick the right unit. Tascam or Pandora?, CD or Mp3 ? Thanks for the assistance chaps !
10. Hi you lot ! I have a 'need' for some smaller amplification to use upstairs at home between gigs, rather than lugging the 'big-guns' up the stairs every week, knocking chips out of the wall and stairs, doing my back in etc etc, and wondered if you chaps had any suggestions ? I was thinking along the lines of a good combo obviously, but ..... In terms of of home-rehearsal, how do the Tascam Bass-trainers fare for this purpose ? Is this a possible solution? I seem to be continually learning band material or other stuff to challenge my playing (of which there's loads) and wondered if this was a reasonable substitute? Tascam appear to have a new Mp3 type trainer which looks very good and compact. I've always had a complete disregard for parents and neighbours etc when I plug and play at home, (nice eh?) but one of the above may make me 'environmentally friendly'....... well at least while I'm playing the bass at home ! Open to ideas on either ! Ta
11. ....Sheesh !! What a beauty. If I had another lifetime to learn to play 6-strings I'd be having this. (as a present to myself for xmas). It would be worth the money just to look at every day, never mind play it! Have a bump on me too ! Awesome.
12.
Out of curiosity, why did you not just buy an amp with a graphic EQ or similar ?
mmmm... good question! A combination of things really. I had an Aguilar AG500 and there wasn't enough versatility with the basic EQ, and I'd heard and read so much about the TF that I needed to try one out. The guy I bought my TF from was an accomplished player and really new his way around the frequencies and the thing sounded really sweet. I thought "I'll have some of that...how hard can it be ?" To be honest , its great. It's powerful has fantastic tone width, the only problem I have with is it ME (currently) The advice above has been great. Everything set flat and then tweak ever so gently with the cut and boost, ...some 'enhance' and cut the 'timbre' and voila !... its getting better. I'm convinced when I get a little handier with this thing , It'll probably be the best all-rounder I've played through. The Thumb sounds good through it, but the Sadowsky sounds a-w-e-s-o-m-e ! Hi RIM basses, what frequencies do you cut on the mids for the best slap-tone ?... do you cut from the 12-o'clock position ? Cheers fellas Daz
13. Hey Guys.. Cheers for the advice. Thats how I like it...nice and simple. WarwickHunt......thanks for the Pic. That'll be my starting point, Chris B and the rest of you guys.... thanks for the tips ! I was lucky enough this week that FedEx brought me a new toy. A beautiful Sadowsky J4-NYC baby-girl ! She has the Vintage tone control and even more potential to either bugger-up or enhance my current tone, so it's time to lock myself away and get tweaking. I know the perfect tone is in there somewhere , I just need to get busy with it ! Thanks again guys.... keep 'em comin. Daz
14. Hi guys 'n gals.. Ever had one of those situations where the more you twiddle with something the worse things appear to get ? Well, that's me at the minute. The Thunderfunk amp I currently use has an "infinitely variable" parametric EQ where you have the opportunity to cut and boost frequencies of your choice within quite a broad range. I've read the owners manual and the advice is to "experiment" and that it will take time for the user to get used to making the minor tweaks necessary to enhance the overall tone/sound. Having been previously used to Bass/Mid/Treble shelving controls or a graphic EQ this is giving me a headache..... I'm determined to get the better of this but would appreciate any advice or tips that you bass-chatters can give on either the Thunderfunk EQ or paramateric EQ generally. I play fingerstyle most of the time ( with a wee bit of slap thrown in now and then) , using an active jazz as my primary bass, and a Thumb. I suspect any answers will suggest the correct settings for my EQ will depend on the room, the speaker enclosures I use (2 x Aguilar GS112's) and how aggressive I play the bass .........but as I say, any assistance with this would be great ! Heeelp !!
15. Dan Biased Opinion coming right up. Over the past few months I've been trying out various amp/cab combinations in search of the best sound for me (..point to note, everybody is looking for something different!) I tried Mesa, Ampeg, SWR and others and narrowed it down to 2 after spending silly money and travelling many miles. Aguilar AG500 and the Thunderfunk550. The Aguilar, when coupled to a 4ohm load is just so loud and has clarity to cut through and be heard. Simple controls make it easy to dial in a great sound and the 'dirty' channel works well if overdrive's your thing. It was a close run thing for me, but I wanted a more 'Hi-Fi sound' and I get that with the Thunderfunk, albeit it takes a little more work to tweak and fart about with the controls, thats the only downside. No complaints about the Aggie though, but I can't keep both. The upshot is, that I now have a Aguilar AG500 (twin channel) up for grabs (in the F/S section), hardly used , 6 weeks old. Unlikely to find one one newer/cheaper anywhere. PM me if you need any more info. Biased Opinion ...you bet !!
16. Hi Dood.. I've been trying to find a worthy Multi-Fx replacement for my ageing Alesis Midiverb 4 which has been bolted into my 6U for what seems like an eternity. Its old and kranky now (...and loses marks because the display backlight has had it too), but was wondering how highly you rated the G-Force ? Seen a few reviews 'leaning' towards electric 6-string use rather than bass...so woz wondering if you give it a big thumbs up ? ps... where did you aquire the unit, All, For the record, 4U containing 1 x Thunderfunk550, 1 x Midiverb 4....and some space in between
Awww lovely! well.. I have a 4u rack. It contains very little at the moment. I have an EBS multicomp, a TC Electronics G-Force and my favourite amp.. a 1u 1k+1k power amp. I have a power rack strip at the back of the box and a blanking panel at the front. Every cable is neatly arranged so the signal leads stay away from the mains leads. All the EQ / fx / valve sims are done on the TC. I mix a direct signal with the compressed signal and like to use cabs that are a bit hifi. Thats really about it. Oh, I also carry a stereo DI box and an MXR M80 should anything go badly wrong!!!
