2. Hi everyone.. I've now put this on eBay, starting at £99.99.. Auction ends Sunday night.. Thanks for looking, Ian
 3. Hi, I'm selling a John East J-Retro 01 Preamp. It's the standard Jazz plate shape, with 3 stacked knobs & jack socket so it can be dropped into any standard Jazz bass. The knobs and plate are all in black. The only difference with this one is that I asked for the frequencies of the treble & bass pots to be the same as the Marcus Retro 01. The treble and bass frequencies of the Marcus Retro 01 are slightly lower than the standard J-Retro, the treble is at 1.5 kHz and the bass is at 40Hz. To my ears the treble has a bit more bite and the bass is a bit fatter. All in all a great retro fit preamp for anyone wanting to super charge their Jazz bass. I'm asking £140 (they retail at over £200). The item is in 'used' but very good condition and is in perfect working order. Thanks, Ian
 4. Hi there.. I have a McIntyre Fretless 5-String Jazz bass which I'm thinking of selling.. I'm not interested in a trade I'm afraid, but you may be interested in buying it??.. It's a one piece ash body with a flame maple top finished in translucent black with a matt finish.. Flame maple neck, ebony lined fretless board.. Cream bound with blue side position LEDs.. Body coloured facing on the headstock.. Nordstrand "Big splits" pick-ups with an Audere 3 band preamp.. Strap locks.. 18 volts.. Pretty nice actually and in good condition (only one or two minor dings).. I'm thinking of putting it up for £1100 as I paid £2250 for it originally.. Chris McIntyre used to work at Sei and his basses are quite similar.. Well, let me know what you think.. Cheers
 5.
Yup, nice to hear from another pro a bit more often! And I do have a soft spot for the new Take That tunes (oh and Million Love Songs...tune). Ian don't suppose you know who has the bass chair on Wicked at the moment?, saw it the other week, and although you don't really expect any less from pro players and written parts, the playing was excellent! Si *edit* Actually I do remember looking up the name in the program at the time, but was unknown to me, should just check again when I get home haha
Hey Si, Yes, it's Dav Lewis on bass at Wicked at the moment.. He's a great doubler and a nice chap too.. Cheers, Ian
 6.
Dear All, Watching the Take That musical 'Never Forget' on DVD last night (nowt on the telly!). Noticed the bass playing was nicely prominent in mix and sounding extremently good - Nice tone, very assured playing and even a long solo in one of the tracks. The bass player was Ian King, who i'd (not surprisingly) never heard of. He doesn't appear to have his own website. I was wondering if he posts on here or anyone knows him. It would be good to learn what it was like playing that gig, what his set up was etc. I know we've had 'Pro-playing' threads on here before, but what the heck... Anyone help? Steve
Hey all, I noticed this thread and just thought I'd write a few lines in response.. Thanks Steve for your kind words about the 'Never Forget' DVD.. I played on the first tour of 'Never Forget' before moving onto 'Hairspray' in town in October 2007, it was only for 10 weeks but I was lucky enough to get to play on the DVD and the cast album during that time.. The tour was great fun and musically one of the better shows I've played on with a rock solid rhythm section of Chris Taggart on kit, Rob Taggart (no relation) on keys 1 and the awesome Lewis Osborne on guitar (who I'm now enjoying working with on 'Sister Act' at The Palladium).. I was playing my fretted and fretless 5 string McIntyre basses on that one and just had a basic pedal set up with headphones (as there wasn't room up on the gantry for amps).. I think I was using a Sansamp programmable bass driver DI, an EBS unichorus for the fretless stuff, the obligatory Boss TU-2 tuner, a Boss line-switcher and a Morley Volume pedal.. All pretty simple really.. Pedal wise I'm actually much more excited about the set-up I've achieved more recently and am now using at The Palladium.. I realised that certain pedals will just sap your sound and you'll always be fighting against them unless you replace them with something more neutral sounding.. The passive Morley volume pedal was the worst culprit of this and changing it over to a Visual Sound Volume Pedal made an ENORMOUS difference and essentially completely restored the midrange that I felt I'd been losing on these shows.. Anther change I made was ditching the Boss line-switcher pedal for a Lehle 3@1 pedal, it's a true-bypass switcher with no loss of sound and is super quiet.. I also ditched the Sansamp for an EBS Microbass II which is far superior, the EBS has 2 channels, the 2nd of which is a dirtier sansamp style channel but you have the added benefit of a super clean 1st channel and a parallel blendable FX loop (great for adding subtle chorus) amongst other great features.. I also bought an Analogman modded Boss GE-7 pedal which has had some of it's components replaced with better quality ones to reduce hiss and I use that for my double bass.. Oh and I use an EBS Multicomp too.. So my set up now runs like this, For the electric bass. Bass -> EBS Multicomp -> EBS Microbass II -> Channel 1 of Lehle 3@1 -> Visual Volume Pedal -> (tuner out into) Boss TU-2 For the double bass. Bass -> Analogman GE-7 -> Channel 2 of Lehle 3@1 -> Visual Volume Pedal -> (tuner out into) Boss TU-2 Channel 3 is spare in case I have a show with fretless as well as fretted and Upright I've got it all mounted on a Pedaltrain 2 with a Jim Dunlop DC brick powering it all Some might say it's overkill but it's all super quiet true-bypass stuff and it sounds killing!.. I'm not using an amp in the pit again as I'm sat very close to the string section but have had a butt-kicker attached to the underside of my chair which helps give the feel of a large amp shifting air next to you when you're actually playing away silently on headphones! Well, I hope that answers some of your questions.. I'll endeavour to get no here more often and keep basschatting! All the best - Ian King
 7.
I just bought a Mono bag yesterday. It's probably the best that I've come across, a bit expensive maybe but so were my basses.
Ah cool, do you think I could fit my 35" scale Jazz bass in a Mono case?
 8. Hi everyone, I've now got a couple of Overwater Jazz basses and one of their Perception basses, all five stringers, 35" scale... I now need some decent gig bags for them.. Nothing too bulky but with decent padding etc.. The Jazz basses are quite long overall (smidge under 48") and I'm wondering which cases they'd fit in.. I've seen ads for iGig bags and Mono too.. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, Ian

 11.
I've recently been considering a 5-string Jazz again with a 34" scale so this is very attractive, and so near to home. Three important questions are string spacing at the nut, width of the nut and how deep is the neck?
I've just done some measuring (albeit with just a regular plastic ruler so it may not be 100% accurate) but it seems these are the dimentions: Nut width - 48mm String spacing at the nut (measured from the middle of a string to the middle of the next string) - 10mm Depth of neck - roughly 20mm at nut to 25mm at neck/body joint These are just a rough guide though. It would be best to try the bass. I would say that the neck is a 'fast' one. Not very deep and very easy to get around. The whole instrument is a sleek, modern take on a Jazz bass. Thanks for looking!
 12. So who's interested in buying this splendid bass then?
 13.
What's the weight?
Hi there, I'm not sure what the weight is, I don't have any scales at the moment. But I'd say it's a medium weight Jazz. Perfectly manageable. Thanks for looking. Let me know if you'd like to try the bass. Ian
 14.
I agree! All the players for JTQ have been monsters, Andrew, Gary and Ian King. Ian was a member here for a short time until he had a negative expereince via PM in regard to a bass he was trying to sell.
Eh??!.. Nope, I'm still here! Ha ha..
 15.
whats the scale length?
Hi there, It's a 34" scale instrument with 19mm string spacing. Cheers, Ian

 23.
Welcome! Didn't even realsie Gary Crockett had left JTQ... Do you cross paths with Phil Mulford much?
Hello there.. Yes I see Phil every so often, I work at the top of Drury Lane at Hairspray and he works at the bottom of Drury lane on Dirty Dancing so we bump into each other quite a bit and occasionally grab a bite to eat in between shows on a matinee day and talk bass... or should that be bass chat??
 24.
Yeah, I haven't met him yet but it seems like we might have a few acquaintences in common. He's a superb player - some really funky solos! I went to see JTQ at the Hammersmith Palais a few years back. I think Gary Crockett was playing for him then though. Whats James like to work with? I'm guessing the JTQ bass lines are fairly demanding physically? Did you learn them by reading or by ear?
James is fine to work with.. On my first gig I'd had no rehearsal or even a sound check so was pretty much thrown in at the deep end.. But James is very clear with his cues and has been dead friendly to me... You're right, the bass lines are pretty fast and furious on a lot of the songs, but great fun to play.. Learning the tunes I did a bit of both, I listened through to a few recordings but also Andy had written me out some basic charts with example bass lines and the structure outlined, so that really helped..
