IMO the 'Everything through the PA with no backline' pendulum, as opposed to huge backline with PA for vocals only, has swung too far. I started downsizing the backline, upsizing the PA, back in the 80s, based on the premise that the backline need only be large enough to have sufficient stage volume to allow one to get their preferred tone and feel, while the room is driven by the PA. That means no 810s, no Marshall stacks. Not even Vox AC30. But it doesn't mean no amps. As in all things the best results are had when one practices moderation.

Now that's what I believe is the acceptable balanced solution.

Nice little light weight combo producing sensible on stage volume & vibe with great DI to allow the FOH to amplify the on stage performance.

There are some very interesting new options available Fender Rumble 800C, GR Bass AeroTech Full Carbon 800 Combo, https://www.markbass.it/product/mb58r-mini-cmd-121-pure/. Plus your fav amp with a LFSys Silvertone or BF SC, or Two 10.

So a compromise, lowish onstage volume with enjoyable tone, feel and great FOH production.

    Have I missed something???

Of course I haven't spent a fortune on supa dupa IEM.

But I really do apologise, I am a 70 year old, olde F**t who absolutely loves playing bass having grown up in the 60's, 70's & 80's and does not get the vibe thro a set of plugs stuffed in my ears ( especially with my tinnitus) .

    Sorry Luddites R Us😂😂😂

I fitted a DiMarzio to an Epiphone EB-0 some years back, more recently the Artec to an Antoria EB-3.  To my ears there was little difference, I actually preferred the Artec which if I recall was around 1/4 of the price.

    +1

I fitted an Artec EBC-4 to my reissue Epiphone Newport bass and it adds so much more of the 60's & 70's Gibson EBO/EB3 low end to the Newport. The combination of the EBC-4 and the stock TB Pro bridge Pup offers a very wide range of tone colours with the simplicity of balance control.

The Artec EBC-4 is a great upgrade for any EBO /EB3.

I assume, judging from how the pole pieces are arranged, that the 2 humbucker essentially are 2 P pickups under the cover, which would be right up my alley as well.

    Nope.

It appears to be using the humbucking PUPs used on the Squier Tele Bass.

They appear to be a modern ( lower cost?) version of the PUPs used on the '72 Fender Telecaster bass.

The Squier Tele bass PUPs had a much wider tonal range than the originals, an extended top end but lower output.

I love the '72 PUPs I have on an all original '72 Fender Telecaster Bass  and also an original '72 PUP graphed into a Mike Dirnt  MIM bass.

I would be very happy to own one of these Squier Rascals.

Has anybody found a gig bag that fits one well enough?  I'm just using a standard full scale one but shorter would be better.

    Thanks

Just took delivery of a Fender FS610 Short Scale Bass Gig bag and it fits my G&L Fallout Tribute bass and my Epiphone Newport bass perfectly. It also is a cosy fit for my 32ins scale SpectaRayVibe Bitsa bass.

    Happy Days☺️

This looks amazing, almost the perfect one-stop-amp-in-a box. (only missing a HPF)

The advantage of loading personal IRs really adds to the proposition.

I will probably wait for the Behringer clone to surface sometime next year!! ( BDI21 has been a great little tool)

Haven’t picked it up yet. Going there in the morning. Probably won’t get to play it properly until the evening though.

Make sure you wash your hands well before entering the Holy of Holies and picking up that magnificent instrument.

It's a joy to absorb that first sight of your new "Babe"

    ENJOY

Picked this up yesterday for £80, I'm a big ibanez guitar fan but I didn't have an ibanez bass, needed a damn good clean but has come up lovely

Now that was a great buy , so much potential for mods , it will turn into a labour of tinkering love.

    Congratulations

My conclusion from this past year (with some very helpful input indeed on this thread, thank you!) is that in terms of relatively compact PA set-ups, with no bass line or subs:

RCF310A (relatively budget) --> RCF 912A = big improvement in bass handling --> RCF 732A = further significant improvement in vocals / mids (but looking at double the price of the 310As)

Great job @Al Krow. Very informative and helpful conclusion. You have probably helped many on here save their time and expense with the journey you've published.

    Thanks!!
